has anyone considered using mycosynth lattice to make everything artifacts and using freyalise's -2 to destroy any permanent your opponent controls? it's not game winning, but will slow down your opponent while you set up your win con...

I have my cube set up for multiplayer, with some special rules. Some stuff you may consider trying if you want to make an even more fun environment.

Stocking Tiger- like booster tutor but you get all the cards in the pack Smile

Naughty / Nice - You can help a team mate or grab your opponent's best card (or an answer, like a wrath effect)

"Wish" cards (ie. burning wish) - in multiplayer, all the unused cards go into the center of the table. Anyone playing a wish card gets to look through these cards to pick one of the appropriate card type. Golden wish is too expensive at 5 though, and I plan to alter it to cost 2 or 3 mana instead.

In multiplayer, we tend to like 2v2 (not 2 headed dragon, just team mates where if one of the team members wins, the team wins), or 2v2v1, with one of each 2v2 team mate revealed at the start and the other hidden, along with the single player, who in order to win, has to trick one of the revealed players into believing they are his/her ally, so only those 2 remain, and the single player solely wins (call him the renegade).

you probably should have moved them 4-5 months ago, as everything (except shocklands and abrupt decay) have been plummeting. I think boros reckoner has potential in modern because he is powerful and combos well with other things. domri rade took a big hit in the past week or 2, he was sitting at $30 and now $22 mid, with some low prices around $15. he may go lower, and will be a great pick up. same with sphinx's revelation. most of the cards from m14 will drop substantially, like archangel of thune initially- she is played in pod and is an angel (so a fan favorite) and will eventually go back up, like avacyn. nightveil specters will see the biggest drop, back down to $.50 range.

from what i've heard, wotc would never print fetchlands in a new core set, because it is suppose to be new-player friendly, and somewhat simple; losing life to a land isn't what they want to do in a core set (since printing city of brass and the pain lands).

i hate splintertwin as a card when used to auto win when playing it... makes the game dumb "show you twin, go to game 2". not fun.

I understand what you are saying, as they need exarch and twin to instantly win, and you can disrupt them- but you have to be playing the disruption and draw it in time. It forces people to play answers that without they would most certainly lose. It's way more powerful then a lot of cards already on the banned list.

This is one example of how suppressive these cards can be (not all tournaments are like this, but a lot are), SCG Richmond top 8 on 3/9/14:
    kiki pod
    affinity
    affinity
    melira pod
    melira pod
    u/r twin
    melira pod
    melira pod

there was another tournament (can't seem to find it off hand right now) where almost all top 8 decks ran twin in some fashion or another. but i am glad there is a lot more diversity in modern, like living end, tron, zoo, junk, amulet, norin, etc. i just think it would be a better format without instant win combos if the player draws the correct combination of cards; which is a luck based game, not skill.

I would like to see splinter twin banned, and perhaps something in Pod that makes it too good (I don't think birthing pod itself is broken, just certain cards you can get with it, such as, melira, kiki jiki, deceiver exarch). Basically, these combo cards end the game as soon as they are played, in the case of twin and what comes off of pod. This is not very fun to play with or against.. "did I draw exarch and twin? yep, I win" It calls for so much to counter these cards. If you don't think they are too powerful, look at the top 8 decklists from events over the past few months. So many decks add a few splinter twins to have that instant win available. Pod lists are very popular, lots of melira and kiki in top 8's. Modern should be "fair" to an extent, and I think these cards push it too far. The only other option to counter these cards/decks is to make just as powerful counter strategies, ie. unbanning of JTMS and bloodbraid, as neither of these are played in twin or pod (well, JTMS might be played in a U/W/R twin list, but it doesn't really need twin if it has jace).

I like to think of modern close to on par with power level to standard, just with lots of older sets to choose cards from. The way modern is now, it is full of combo that is not interactive, nor does it feel like you are playing a game with another person. Vintage and Legacy already allow 1 turn win combos, so we really don't need to see anything close to that in Modern. Let's focus modern on games that last 10-15 turns or so. I know there they try to avoid anything less then turn 4 win, but is 4 turns really all you want to play in this format? Like, did I draw the answer for his one turn kill? That basically determines the outcomes of a lot of games. Modern is a great format and I really love it (aside from a few things as I've mentioned).

As for the insane cost of fetches (and most modern staples)- I see this as good and bad- it means people are playing modern, they are buying into it, and enjoying it. Bad that it is so expensive to get into it, and with reprints coming, it will only hurt people who invest now. It's probably wise for most people to wait for prices to drop, but that doesn't help grow the format. If modern becomes more popular then standard, then wotc will have to adjust their marketing plans to accommodate. Currently, they make tons of money through standard by selling tons of product every 2-3 months as players have to get the new stuff to continue to play. With modern, once they get a deck they like, they can play it forever. So, wotc will have to print things like modern masters, event decks, etc. to continue to make money off of those players; or by making new cards in standard that are strong in modern.

Sorry I hope I didn't rant to much, but I have a lot to say on the subject!

it will probably have 1 marsh flats, as it is the cheapest fetchland and won't hurt anyone, but only help players get into the format. plus it would help justify the $75 price. the deck also includes a box and sleeves, which are cool. there obviously will be a good amount of playable rares, commons, and uncommons. i'm sure the overall value will be $100 or so. probably no bitterblossom.

modern as a whole has become way too expensive for new players. it's falling into the legacy category- only really rich players can afford to play, which is the exact opposite of most magic players (usually magic players play games instead of work).

wotc's best hope to boost modern is to reprint fetches in standard, and make cards that fit into better strategies then needing to play goyf and bob.

i also feel that modern is becoming a broken format due to combo decks, which isn't fun (losing to splinter twin, scapeshift, storm, ad nauseam, etc.) i wonder if there will be a massive update to the banned list. consider what is happening in the format now, it makes cards like JTMS, stoneforge, bloodbraid, and deathrite shaman look like do-nothings.

i'm surprised you cut spellskite, all i can think is, was he too good? he's been amazing in my cube, which is quite similar to yours. someone set up a nice lock with him the other night- he had a crystal shard and yavimaya hollow on the table along with the spellskite.. try getting anything past that!

JTiny36- that's a great deal as I don't see them dipping below $275 again, unless somehow the market gets flooded with them (if there are a lot of people waiting to unload them, which is possible.. but they will go up again once those sell out). OR, if goyf and bob get banned in modern, then boxes might dip down to $200 again, and slowly rise over the years due to scarcity instead of inherent value. Comparatively, boxes like zendikar and rise of eldrazi are well over $300, a lot due to them being old and low amounts left, so that would indicate that modern masters will likely be more them those within a year or so.

Pizzap, I don't think you understood what I'm asking- I'm talking about in the past week there appears to be very few available anywhere online, whereas, a month ago, almost every vender had them for about $250 and several in stock. Coolstuffinc sold about 300 of them during their end of year sale (for around $200 each). They were never available for MSRP (presales were for about $200 each). Drying up now means only a handful left, not thousands like 6 months ago.
