This is an incredibly awesome program. Does a much better job of showing off Magic's beautiful artwork, or recreating the kitchen table feeling you get from playing Magic in real life.
One possibility is to simply use the current legacy banned list as the no reprint list. That would make a lot of sense. It would allow the list to be flexible.
As a rule of thumb, any card that is too powerful for legacy, is way too powerful for standard and shouldn't be reprinted anyways.
And conveniently, pretty much all the money cards in the game (Power 9, Library, Bazaar, Mishra's Workshop, Mana Drain) are banned in legacy already and will never be unbanned because they are simply way too powerful. SO collectors can feel secure about those cards not getting reprinted.
there are dozens of old over powered cards not on the reserved list that could be reprinted and never have.
That's a very good point. The people who make sets aren't stupid. They've been able to keep innovating this game set after set for 10 years which is pretty damn amazing.
There's a ton of cards on the reserved list that are worth about .10 cents now and have no business being on the list. And tons of geniuinely high priced cards (Sea Drakes for example) aren't on the list. And Wizards is still smart enough not to reprint them. So I think the purpose the list currently serves now is jack squat.
I think they would be smart to do away with the list completely, or atleast, dramatically radically reduce it's size.
Have you guys looked at all the garbage worthless cards cluttering up the Reserved list lately?

Another possibility is to replace the entire reprint list with a simple list some what similar to this one...
5 Mox
Black Lotus
Ancestrall Recall
Time Walk
The Original Duals (Possibly)
A few others
Then cool cards like Powder Keg could be reprinted (Powder Keg currently sells for about $1 each, it's value would only go up if it was reprinted and thus type 2 legal).
The list is full of cards that are currently not played in any format and are close to worthless, so why have them cluttering of this list. And some of those cards would actually make for a great and fun addition to standard, and would go up in price if reprinted as a rare.
Remember that just because a card isn't on the list doesn't mean that wizards would ever reprint it. Thousands of popular cards that were never on the list weren't reprinted (rancor is a popular example). So don't assume that wizards would ever consider reprinting the power 9 just because they got rid of the list.
Other than just a few cards, most of the cards on the reprint list would actually go up from their current value if they were reprinted as a rare or perhaps a mythic rare. So I doubt any collectors would mind such a modification.
To prove my point, here is a complete list of all the cards on the list. I think it's easy to see that 99% of the cards on this list are already worthless and no one cares if those get reprinted, so Wizards should make a cleaner smoother list...

Now try and tell me that's not a bloated list filled with chaff.
The two-year-old torrent I mentioned above has almost 40 seeds right now. There is more to creating a successful torrent than just uploading it somewhere. BTW, 1) torrents are immune to CRC errors and server failures, 2) an individual can pick single files from a torrent if that's all he needs, 3) a torrent only needs to be uploaded once, and can be done so over a period of days, 4) can be uploaded by someone who does have plenty of bandwidth, and there are lots of those 5) is very friendly to those with limited bandwidth, because it can be stopped and resumed as many times and over as long a period as necessary. I don't know why you fixate on those with a lack of bandwidth.
The thing is, there is lots of good advice in this thread for someone who wants wide acceptance of their app. If Octagon is just a vanity project, feel free to ignore it all. But if it's only a vanity project then it doesn't deserve so much publicity and should stay in the chat room away from the scrutiny and commentary of users who have broad experience with all card playing apps.
I think it's really rude of you to call or suggest this is a vanity project. It seems like a lot of dedicated people put a ton of work into this, and are making it available to everyone.
It sounds like a work of passion, like linux and openoffice, rather than a vanity project. And I have nothing but respect for stuff like that. Anyone that takes time out of their lives to work on something great like this, for everyone to use for free, is a great person in my book.
And it helps that they made such a fantastic and beautiful program that's a lot of fun to use.
That said, those are some fantastic points you made about the pros of torrents. After reading them, I think torrents would be the absolute best way to distribute this, bar none.
But I can understand people working on this wanting to wait until they are sure that all the errors are fixed with the sets before uploading a torrent, just to make sure that there are no problems what so ever with it.
First, please cease attacking the good people at OCTGN2. Criticizing is one thing, but its starting to step over that line.
Personally, I've never used MWS, and never will due to the exorbitant complications in setting it up, the huge initial investment in downloading images, and the fact that the creators of the program don't care about its well being. It is maintained by some dedicated 3rd party individuals, which is admirable, but they are not the creators, and are thus limited in what they can do.
I could care about OCTGN2, but you know what I'd like to see first? An option to just have it auto-download images from gatherer as you access them in the program. Sure, they aren't "HQ", but I don't care. It makes setting up about a bazillion times simpler, and there is no huge initial investment in memory. Just take the images as you need 'em. And what's more, I know its possible - Firemox did it, but nobody else wants to do it. *shrugs*
Gaspare, are you an OCTGN2 developer?
Just ignore the haters Pichoro, most of them don't know what they're talking about.
I tried the program and I absolutely love it. Thank you for helping make it. This has quickly become my favorite client by a large margin.
First of all, the Reserved list ain't doing ****. Almost every card on that list has had it's value affected via being obsoleted over the past ten years. All it's doing is preserving the value of the Power 9 and old Duals. That's literally it; the other cards on it don't matter.
That may help a few dealers, but it doesn't help Wizards, because people only apply this value retention to cards that Wizards hasn't printed in fifteen years. They're not applying it to modern cards (nor can they be expected to).
In fact, the Reserve list is cutting off a huge source of income for Wizards; if they were to reprint the Power 9 and original Duals in some form they could make a killing off of it. Instead it does nothing for them.
Wizards can't serve retailers with a scarce supply. This is exactly the kind of misunderstanding of economics that the author is trying to 'correct'. If the supply is scarce it means that retailers can't get all the product they know they're able to sell. It may help a few retailers who can get their hands on more product; it hurts the majority. Profits aren't decided by percentage but by gross.
FtV: Exiled being super expensive and rare doesn't have a "point". It's simply an economic mistake.
Lotus was never $2000 at launch. Alpha sets were sold at MSRP when the set was in print so that's a stupid example. Mycroft, you got extremely lucky. No one near me would let you buy or preorder it for anything close to MSRP.
That's not the Topic though. The topic is, is it acceptable to us players to be price gouged to such ridiculous degree. To the point where we are expected to pay $120-150 for a product with a $35 MSRP, a product that they get from Wizards for $17. It sure as hell isn't cool with me.
And I blame wizards for this as much as retailers. When there are shortages on videogqme consoles for example, Sony, Nintendo etc tell retailers they still can't sell above MSRP. They can bundle with additional games and limit it to one per purchase and on a first come first serve basis but straight up jacking up the price above MSRP at launch is a huge no no in most every other industry. In other industries licenced retailers are expected to sell things at MSRP or atleast close to it.
For those of you who dont know about it. From the Vault Exiled's MSRP was $39 and it was sold to retailers for 3/4th that price. But no place anywhere sold it at the MSRP like they were supposed to. I showed up on launch day to get them. Everyone doubled or tripled the MSRP price.
Starcitygames still sells the set for four tines the MSRP!! For 15 Cards that they pay wizards $30 for, they charge $150. Shouldn't wizard have a policy against stuff like that. Marking up a product $10 above the MSRP I guess is fine. But marking it up to four times the MSRP is just ridiculous. It's price gouging plain and simple. IMO Wizards should either prevent that or print enough that retailers won't jack up the price so much.
And price gouging is becoming ever more common place, just try getting a box of Zendiakar at anything close to the MSRP if you don't believe me. Samething with M10. Should wizards atleast try and come close to printing enough cards to satisfy demand.
And I blame wizards for this as much as retailers. When there are shortages on videogqme consoles for example, Sony, Nintendo etc tell retailers they still can't sell above MSRP. They can bundle with additional games (but never for more than the msrp of the games) and limit it to one per purchase and on a first come first serve basis but straight up jacking up the price well above MSRP at launch is a huge no no in most every other industry. In other industries licenced retailers are expected to sell things at MSRP or atleast close to it high demand or not. Which is why if you waited in line for the Wii or the iPhone or PS3 slim or anyother product, you got it for the msrp and any one that tried to pricegouge were blacklisted by nintendo, Sony etc.
Now I want to post a reply that explains my point better than I ever could:

The four origional abilities were around the same level of power as a 1 cost spell in its colours, red: deal to damage to target creature or player. Blue: draw a card, White: gain 3 life, Black, raise dead.
While making a 3/3 is that of a weaker 3 cost or stronger 2 cost card, and the twiddle effect feels out of place
You're right. I made it a 2/2 bear instead of a 3/3. I suppose it could even be a 2/1.
I didn't mean that the printed card should have these same exact abilities, though green making a creature token make the most sense. The twiddle effect was the most artifacty ability I could come up with, but I'm sure wizards can think up something better.
I just meant that Legacy and Extended would love to see a Sword equipment that gives creatures protection from Tarmogoyf. So it seems like a no brainer that they should print it.
Sword of Earth and Steel 3
Artifact - Equipment
Card text: Equipped creature gets +2/+2 and gains protection from green and from artifacts. This effect doesn't remove Sword of Earth and Steel.
Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, put a 2/2 green bear creature token onto the battlefield and tap or untap target artifact.
Equip 2
The cycle is incomplete though without an equipment that protects against green. I think an equipment like that would see a ton of play in Extended and Legacy where Tarmogoyf is played in most every deck.
And just like Red is the opposite of Blue and White is the opposite of Black, Green is the opposite of Artifacts.
Green hates artifacts. It hates anything artificial. And artifacts almost never have green like abilities. So it would make perfect sense.
So how long do you think it'll be before wizards prints something similar to this. I think they pretty much have to, especially considering how badly Extended and Legacy want and need a card like this.
If you don't believe me about how badly Legacy wants to see this card, just take a look at this thread.
This is an incredibly awesome program. Does a much better job of showing off Magic's beautiful artwork, or recreating the kitchen table feeling you get from playing Magic in real life.
Kind of surprised at how few people are using it.
That's a very good point. The people who make sets aren't stupid. They've been able to keep innovating this game set after set for 10 years which is pretty damn amazing.

So I think the purpose the list currently serves now is jack squat.
I think they would be smart to do away with the list completely, or atleast, dramatically radically reduce it's size.
Well that is the point that I was trying to make. The current long list of cards on the no reprint list IS an abomination.
I'm not sure about the hiding things in a spoiler thing. Any mod should feel free to do that if it would look better.

Just ignore the haters Pichoro, most of them don't know what they're talking about.
I tried the program and I absolutely love it. Thank you for helping make it. This has quickly become my favorite client by a large margin.
Artifact decks are the main ones that need an answer to Goyf..
Equip 2
We already have...
Sword of Fire and Ice
Sword of Light and Shadow
Wish I saw the thread before making my name.
