I've always steered away from combat-centered/combat-reliant commanders because I feel like I'm really terrible at playing them. It always gets too political too quickly because I seem to attack at the wrong time or too early (to activate an ability, work with utility that requires attacking, etc), and the rest of the table sees me as the threat and starts to retaliate. But I can't be mad, because that's what those types of decks do.
My question is; how do you play these combat-centered commanders? I would love to delve into some different generals, but I'm finding myself going back to the same strategies for brewing deck ideas.
Any of them could be casual, of course, but I'm working on a casual Locust build and it seems like it's going to be really fun and interactive, where the others seem more competitive. Lots of universal draw effects, lots of token manipulation, and lots of "destroy creatures, put dragons on the field for each creature destroyed" effects (e.g.Day of the Dragons, Dragonshift, Descent of the Dragons, etc). I'm trying to get a few of my friends into EDH, and I'm hoping it'll be a fun interactive way of helping some people out. I know you were referring to a little more competitive, but there it is
I've been away from the game for a couple of years and I'm just getting back into some casual EDH (trying to get a group of friends to buy decks to play). I'm building a draw deck/token with The Locust God and I think I have the theme/win-con stuff down, but because I've been gone for a while, I'm blanking on some staples I should include for the deck (mana artifacts, search, etc). Can someone help me out with some recommendations?
Here's your primer banner. I rearranged the card order a bit; it looks like Linvala and the Dragonlord are looking up at Sigarda, but I can change it if you want.
For me, definitely Combo....a lot of the fun in Commander is the interaction with your own deck (obviously), but more importantly with the whole table. Combo says "Yeah, you guys do your thing, Imma just sit here and search my library for these three specific cards, check in with me later, kay?" Stax is also a pain, but at least it's kind of interactive. Group Hug isn't the most fun to play against, but that's the definition of interactive, so it's cool in my book!
Hey all, I'm currently working on a Rafiq deck (not competitive, but not casual either. Good but fun is the goal) and I'm stuck with direction for the deck. I like the goal of having a bunch of Exalted creatures out, but I don't want the strategy to be too linear. Maybe just stall/control for a while, do some combo-ish/synergistic stuff to build, then drop Rafiq and wipe everyone in one or two turns? I guess I'm looking for a side strategy other than exalted, or just something that won't be boring to play after about a week. Here's the current list:
I'm not the best deck builder, so I'm just looking for a direction to take this list in. I should cut down on utility stuff (mana and removal) to make way for more strategy based cards, but I can't convince myself to take anything out. Any and all advice is definitely welcome! Thanks!
Thanks for the suggestions. I really like the Whip idea, I was looking for some life gain permanents as a failsafe...as for Go for the Throat, I'm going to be killing my opponents creatures, but I also need something to get rid of Persy somehow, but more removal never hurt! I was thinking about Debt to the Deathless as an alternate finisher/ mana dump with a late game land draw or something...thoughts?
I've got an idea for a deck and it's more or less an angels/demons lockout/control deck. The basis of the deck is that I stall the game for the while, drawing cards/killing creatures until I can drop Abyssal Persecutor and Platinum Angel to lock out the game. I'm going to be (most likely) taking a lot of damage from "draw 2, lose 2" effects, so Repay in Kind is to get them down to my level when I can't lose the game. I have a start on the deck, but would like some feedback/ help in finishing/refining.
If I remember correctly, the goal was to lock out the game, beat down with Persecutor, and then kill one of the two (angel or persy) to win with some life gain as a fail safe, if that helps.
Hey guys, a while back a buddy of mine had a casual BW angels/demons midrange/combo deck. I don't remember much about the deck, but it ran Wall of Omens and had an Abyssal Persecutor/ Platinum Angel lockout in it. I'm looking to build a deck similar to this, but (long story short) I can't contact him and don't have the original deck list. Can someone help me to brainstorm some ideas for this?? Please and thanks!
