I've been playing around with the idea of a Budget Jund for awhile now; partially because of the awesomeness that is Bloodbraid Elf and also as an excuse to run some cards I've always liked but been unable to find a home for - Nyxathid, Putrid Leech and Blightning are the main 3 from that group so I'd rather not cut them.
Anyway, this is what I have so far;
Obviously it won't be winning any tournaments but I think it could handle its own in my group. There are some budget substitutions; Nyxathid is a (inferior) replacement for Tarmogoyf Grim Lavamancer = budget Deathrite Shaman
No Bob's or Lilianna. The only changes from that list are possibly some DS's down the road.
So I'm still 4 cards short; not sure if I should go the Duress/Despise route or maybe some card draw? Let me know what you guys think about the deck and any (budget) changes you might make.
Have you considered Dreadbore in the Terminate slot? Slower, yes, but you're tapping out quite a bit anyway; it can hit PWs; it's a bit more expensive. Just a thought.
I would venture a guess that Duress would make a good play in the first couple turns to take out particular answers or combo pieces, but we don't know a whole lot about your meta. What exactly goes on in your playgroup?
Dreadbore is a great card but almost no one plays Walkers in my meta, so it's kind of a waste.
As far as my meta goes it's varied; lots of combo and aggro but not as much control. if I wanted to make the investment Inquisition of Kozilek would be the best in the 1-drop slot but again, it's the $$$ investment. I could always run Duress until the deck is finished and then slowly switch them out for IoK.
Well, if it's combo and aggro, do you think you'd be better-served with creature hate than discard? You'd have better tempo gains from killing things that hit the battlefield. Or since you've already got Lightning, Blightning, and Terminate, maybe a few more decent threats would better - especially something that can interact well with aggro creatures? o:"first strike" cmc=2 c!brg on magiccards.info might show some possible options.
Also, since you've got more room for experimentation than the average Jund player, have you thought about 2ish copies of Rancor? Suddenly BoP and everything else you've got gets a little scarier, including manlands.
I like the Rancor idea. As far as more threats, I'll look into it for some ideas. I'm pretty confidant about the current cards choices; the best idea may be to to find a couple of options and play test with each to see which works better. Thanks for the ideas.
Edit: Just did a quick search; need to look more but one that came up was Vampire Hexmage. 2/1 First Strike. The CMC could hurt though; another BB. The advantage is it can work as anti-Planeswalker (if I happen to come up against any) or with Dark Depths if I ever make the investment (and find space as it doesn't tap for mana).
Anyway, this is what I have so far;
2x Scavenging Ooze
4x Putrid Leech
4x Nyxathid
4x Bloodbraid Elf
2x Thundermaw Hellkite
Spells - 20
3x Lightning Bolt
4x Terminate
4x Hymn to Tourach
4x Blightning
3x Despise
2x Duress
Land - 24
1x Forest
2x Swamp
1x Mountain
1x Karplusan Forest
2x Overgrown Tomb
2x Llanowar Wastes
2x Copperline Gorge
4x Blackcleave Cliffs
2x Raging Ravine
2x Treetop Village
1x Fire-Lit Thicket
2x Graven Cairns
2x City of Brass
2x Obstinate Baloth
2x Grim Lavamancer
