Well, once we have a few more cards, we'll be able to fill things in a bit better -- there's only so many possibilities, after all! It won't be uninformed speculation at that point.
I agree, but I think we'd still miss some opportunity to fill in easy blanks if they jump on people for saying "131 is obviously X card because the only other option is Y and Z."
This being said, I understand the reasoning. I picked out likely options for W and had a VERY hard time pairing things down to just 34-35 cards. I certainly can imagine the cluster that can occur if everyone presents a 35 card wishlist of each color.
So, now that this is an "official" thread, we're no longer allowed to speculate on cards for a given number, even though that's what most of the previous posts in this thread are?
No, you completely misunderstand. This is the CRUNCH thread, not the baseless post cards you want reprinted thread. Crunch the numbers and supply the evidence all you want, that's the purpose of the thread. It's perfectly fine to speculate and postulate which cards come before Dark Confidant or Before City of Brass based on the information. "I can haz Vendillion Clique" posts are the reason for the rule, and to make the thread entirely less spammy.

Just to reintterate, point out the logical options all you want, just show your work. I'll update the wording to say this better.
If City of Brass is 221, and lands "should" fit into 219-229... then our lands for the set are likely "functional" lands... The Painlands don't fit (three lands before City), the Filterlands don't fit (Cascade would be the only one before City). Shocklands and Karoos would work though, interestingly enough...
Otherwise:
219 - Academy Ruins/Anceint Den
220 - Blinkmoth/Boseju
221 - City of Brass
The only other reasonable candidate I could find for #220 was Arena.
Possible cards between Tarmogoyf and Tooth and Nail:
Tel-Jilad Archers
Tel-Jilad Chosen
Tel-Jilad Exile
Tel-Jilad Justice
Tel-Jilad Lifebreather
Tel-Jilad Outrider
Tel-Jilad Wolf
Thallid Germinator
Thallid Shell-Dweller
Thelon of Havenwood
Thelonite Hermit
Thorn Elemental
Thornling
Thornweald Archer
Thousand-legged Kami
Thrill of the Hunt
Thrive
Tilling Treefolk
Timber Protector
Timbermare
Time of Need
Toil to Renown
That's a surprisingly large list, mostly due to all the Tel-Jiliad stuff. Some stuff seems very unlikely, like Thousand-Legged Kami and Time of Need which are very specific to the block they appeared in originally. Some of the Tel-Jiliad stuff might be able to be similarly eliminated.
Thorn Elemental is the only card in this list that has not appeared in a black-bordered modern frame, for what that's worth.
Ancient Ziggurat
Bant Panorama (would have to be part of another whole cycle. With Vivids already included this doesn't seem likely)
Blinkmoth Nexus
Blinkmoth Well
Boseiju, Who Shelters All (already reprinted in FtV)
Cascade Bluffs (would have to be part of another whole cycle. With Vivids already included this doesn't seem likely)
If the tron lands are in, the land list is almost totally settled:
219 L Academy Ruins
220 L Ancient Ziggurat/Blinkmoth Nexus/Blinkmoth Well
221 L City of Brass
222 L Urza's Mine
223 L Urza's Power-Plant
224 L Urza's Tower
225 L Vivid Crag
226 L Vivid Creek
227 L Vivid Grove
228 L Vivid Marsh
229 L Vivid Meadow
Ancient Ziggurat
Bant Panorama (would have to be part of another whole cycle. With Vivids already included this doesn't seem likely)
Blinkmoth Nexus
Blinkmoth Well
Boseiju, Who Shelters All (already reprinted in FtV)
Cascade Bluffs (would have to be part of another whole cycle. With Vivids already included this doesn't seem likely)
So basically it seems like:
Ancient Ziggurat
Blinkmoth Nexus
Blinkmoth Well
I don't think they are worried about closing cycles in Modern Masters.

I think that as affinity is a draftable archetype i think Glimmervoid would make sence but also Ancient Ziggurat too as appears like some zoo stamples are in too
I don't think that urza' power 3 will make the cut in there

Thornweald Archer has never been in a modern frame either...seems like my pick for that slot. Its a great limited common, and people like it enough.

219 L Academy Ruins
220 L Blinkmoth Nexus
221 L City of Brass - Rare
222 L Dakmor Salvage
223 L Glimmervoid
224 L Mutavault
225 L Vivid Crag
226 L Vivid Creek
227 L Vivid Grove
228 L Vivid Marsh
229 L Vivid Meadow
I think Dakmor Salvage is an auto-in if they wanted to push Dredge in limited as the teaser propose.

I did the some crunching myself and I think you are correct except for Dakmor Salvage... Horizon Canopy also fits in that spot and seems a lot better for reprinting depending on the rare slots open. Both seem okay, but I'm routing for the Canopy since it's at least played.
I'm hoping for Mutavault at rare myself, but I would laugh my bottom off if it was printed at Mythic. Why so? For this reason.
"We've also decided that there are certain things we specifically do not want to be mythic rares. The largest category is utility cards, what I'll define as cards that fill a universal function. Some examples of this category would be cycles of dual lands and cards like Mutavault or Char. That also addresses a long-standing issue that some players have had with certain rares like dual lands. Because we're making fewer cards per set, in the new world individual rares will be easier to acquire because each rare in a large set now appears 25% more often."
While I agree Horizon Canopy would be a far better reprint option than Dakmor Salvage, I have some kind of feeling that they chose the latter for some reason...
If they didn't pick it, my second pick for that slot would be Evolving Wild as the usual limited cheap fetch. This one too would make sense, since there isn't any common lands spoiled.

So, question: how are rares-per-color broken down in this or similar sets? Can we determine enough to write off certain cards, at least at original rarities?

From a discussion about skipping town and fleeing from the law:
"Quick, torch the legal system and run!" said no one, ever.
While trying to ambush a creature who favored grabbing and strangling PCs:

In the green slots after Tooth and Nail, I'm guessing we'll see some combination of Wall of Roots, Wickerbough Elder, Troll Ascetic, Viridian Shaman, Wolf-Skull Shaman, Woodfall Primus, and/or Utopia Sprawl.

Agreed, though I feel like for lands they would want to.
With the exception of something like Grove of the Burnwillows because the rest of the cycle doesn't exist

I know they change their minds all the time, but this would hilarious. Giving Mutavault as the example of a Mythic they would not print. Priceless.
Also, my guess for the 3 land slots would be Blinkmoth Nexus, Urborg, and Mutavault.
