... for the people who don't bail. Quite apparently, the number of people who do leave is going to be quite significant.
The thing that I can't understand at all is what significant good will result from being incorporated into the Curse network for us. I know that it gets them more traffic, more clicks, and more ad revenue. What I don't understand is how any of that is going to help us.
I've seen the rather paltry list of "improvements", but none of them seem like the kind of thing that requires being part of the Curse network. The only one that seemed meaningful whatsoever was the increase in security.
But, as someone at DiesToRemoval pointed out, if you're worried about security, why did you port over the entire userbase to the Beta and give our information to Curse without actually giving us an "opt out" option? Doing that shows a blatant disregard for user security and privacy, which is supposedly the much ballyhooed result of this change.
I thought it might be worth pointing out that the sale of the site was up to the owner. Hanes no longer had the time and interest in maintaining sally. It was also in a large factor a matter of the site would decay at that point. When your owner no longer wants to put in the time and money for maintenance its going to go downhill. Yes Curse does have your information now, I don't really see why so many people have an issue with that. Is this the only web site you have ever been on? Your information is probably sold a lot more routinely than in a transaction of a web page selling itself to another company. Your information has not been sold beyond the transfer of ownership. If you have ever been on a social media site.... your information gets sold a LOT more on something like that. Free streaming music? You get my point.
Security also means a lot more than just user information. We have been having more issues with the advertisements in the last half a year to year now. In general our security is getting older which means that more exploits will occur as time goes on. Without the attention of an owner we would just decay away in that means.

I have officially moved to MTGNexus. I just wanted to let people know as my response time to salvation decks being bumped is very hit or miss.
ISBPathfinder brings up many good points. One could actually draw a few parallels between the situation with Hannes as the owner and what happened when Raa bought MTGNews. He didn't want to invest any time, money or resources. We didn't have a figurehead appointed (S_S) in his place that ruined the forums, but it would have went into the state of decay the MTGNews forums did after the fact. For all those people with knee-jerk reactions and whom exaggerate at every turn, the point that Hannes was at before the sale to Curse was the most legitimate point you could ever actually draw those parallels. Every other time was complete hyperbole, but that one time was true.
The fact is, I know more than anyone that this community is very old; and like most old things, it doesn't like change. When the 'News events went down, I had been trying to warn people about what was going to happen for months prior to that - the red flags were there, but people didn't pay attention to them until they were forced to. We don't want that situation here - we don't want to have some massive security breach come up in vBulletin wherein people's information is compromised to an unknown, anonymous source somewhere; or to have an ad pop up with malware that circumvents vBulletin's worn out security features; we don't want the forums to stop functioning some day and everyone be stranded. No one ever assumed there wasn't going to be some loss in such a large change, but it's a necessary change for the sake of the continuity of the community as a whole.
The exaggerations being passed off as facts in regards to how many people will quit coming to the forums is a farce. Same with attempting to say that information isn't secure because Hannes handed it over to Curse - one of the most well known gaming fansite networks on the internet. Rabble rousing doesn't serve any purpose here other than to spread misinformation and speculation, and is not appropriate as feedback for the beta.
One last thing, in response to previous comments about the time needed to add feature or respond: Many features that people take for granted on these forums were additions that weren't in the base software. The Curse techs are trying to add to the new forums all the additions and coding that was done over the last 8.5 years, since 2005. Many of them were vBulletin addons that they're having to figure out how to code in their own software - It's not a one-size fits-all solution. More than likely, they have other projects to work on, as well as trying to get everything on the new forums as close as possible to what we have on live, today. But it's not as easy as people assume it is. None of this is. But it is necessary, in the end.
Yes Curse does have your information now, I don't really see why so many people have an issue with that. Is this the only web site you have ever been on?
Not the only one, but it is one of very, very few. Certainly, I haven't put as much time and information into most other sites.
The exaggerations being passed off as facts in regards to how many people will quit coming to the forums is a farce.
How about you all put your money where your mouth is. Post traffic information before and after the move, as a function of unique users with more than say, fifty posts, who log in each day now and for the first month after the switch.
I'll bet you lose between 1/4th and 1/5th of your users.
I am sure those numbers are being tracked. I do not, however, know if that's something that will be made public... I'll ask though because I think that we all want to know. To me, that % is ultimately how I will judge the success of the switch.

Pure curiosity here, what percent retention would you consider "successful"?

That's up to Curse if that information is released. But until then, as I said before, rabble rousing and rampant doomsayer speculation is useless as feedback regarding the beta. Again, this isn't FOX News. However, if you have something constructive to add regarding the beta or that will be useful in our quest to quash any bugs on the beta, we'd be glad to hear it.

100%. Honestly, if we lose anyone I'll feel like we could have done things better. But, I don't really know what other sites going though similar changes have looked like.
That's setting the bar a bit too high. I think you should be happy with anything above 90% retention. I couldn't imagine it being anything lower than 80%.
Honestly, if we lose anyone I'll feel like we could have done things better.
Well, you're losing me at the very least, but there's nothing to be done better. The new site is inaccessible to me. Nothing can change how it's labeled or how that label is perceived by a firewall.

100%. Honestly, if we lose anyone I'll feel like we could have done things better. But, I don't really know what other sites going though similar changes have looked like.
A small handful of users stayed behind on 'News and for the principle that they just didn't want to abandon their comfort zone or embrace the change; they went on for years about returning MTGN to it's former glory and this and that; and, well, look where they are now 100% user retention after big changes is unfortunately not realistic. It does give a chance for forums to slim down a bit, as the quality users who are pillars of the community or care about it at all will still be around and ride the wave (this excluding those who may not post due to circumstances beyond our control, like the firewall block at a work place). The point being, we may lose some people (and no one wants that), but many of the users who help maintain the continuity of the community and whom contribute to it will still be here to help better us as a whole. If anything, the signal to noise ratio on the forums will lower, for a bit.
*before someone tries to insinuate that I'm devaluing the users we lose, that is not the case; I'm pointing out that many dedicated users or veterans will more than likely remain despite an inevitable less-than-100% user retention, which is a positive thing.
If anything, the signal to noise ratio on the forums will higher, for a bit.
An example of high signal to noise ratio would be ten to one, or ten times as much signal as there is noise. An example of low signal to noise ratio would be two to one, or only twice as much signal as noise.
You're saying the noise decreases, which is the second half of the ratio. That makes the ratio larger.
EDIT: On topic, I do think you're right. Most of the people you lose in the change will be people that don't actually care about the community or haven't contributed. The people with the most reason to stay are the kind of people you want to have around anyway.
You'll only get a few people like me that are moderately decent contributors who have to leave. Overall, the whole community will likely be better after all is said and done. Plus, you'll have a better site for those people that stay. Sucks for me. Sucks for anyone who likes my Zedruu Primer. All in all, not too much impact.
I'd say my opinion on this beta is very very simple.
If the new forums don't retain every functionality of the current forums PLUS add new features, we're being shoved into a glorified downgrade and there will be lots of angry users.
I've seen the aftermath of big forum changes before, my suggestion is if it ain't broke don't fix it.
Curse in particular should note that making too many changes or poor decisions in handling of issues that may seem "low priority" to them can drive away A LOT of users.
I was around when the WotC boards shifted from something like MTGS is now to something more like facebook. Blood ran red in the streets, the moon fell from the sky and the flames rose above the tallest trees.
Guys, please. Focus on what WE can do to make the new site better. Thanks.
@Frogs: What if we don't have complete functionality at the time of launch, but will be working towards it? For example, right now, the thanks feature isn't there. It's on the list, but it's not high priority because there's other things higher, like skins. But we've impressed on Curse that we want them. So is it ok if we launch without it, but with the intention of having it (re-)implemented?
As for upgrades, there's definitely those. There's Market Street stuff that I don't understand, but for the Rumor Mill, Rulings and the format forums (Standard, Legacy, etc.), the ability to link to cards in the spoiler with the [card] tag? Imagine we just spoiled Triad of Fates, and you want to make a Triad of Fates deck in Commander? Now you can, COMPLETE WITH CARD TAGS! AWWWWWWYEAH!

I think that it's important to note that not all feedback is going to be overwhelmingly positive. And while pats on the back are nice for feeling good, they don't get changes made that will be helpful.
My comments here were all in the vein of constructive criticism. At no point did I say, "You guys suck. The new site sucks. I'm leaving."
I merely said that the foremost issue is figuring out what got Curse flagged as a gaming site, and why it didn't happen for this forum. I've seen many suggestions saying that it had to do with third-party sites and lists they maintain. If that is the case, then it may indeed be impossible for Curse to do anything about it.
But it could also have to do with other phenomena, such as meta tags or spider info files. If that is the case, then there is something that can be done about it. Search engine optimization is a thing, after all, and Curse ought to have someone on staff who understands it. While it can draw traffic your way if you do it right, it can also draw down the wrath of the gatekeepers.
Also, since Xen is incapable of responding to me in a calm and levelheaded fashion, I'd appreciate it if staff could instruct him not to interact with me at all. I know you all do things like this from time to time, so, I'd appreciate a little staff intervention.

We do realize that not all will be happy with the new site, we are trying to focus on what we can do to increase the number of people who are happy with it though which is why the launch was delayed.
Curse getting flagged as a gaming site - I think we have probably covered this enough but the end consensus is that for the time being, there is nothing that can be done about this. Curse is well aware of it, we are well aware of it, it sucks, but there is nothing that can really be done about it. Yes, we can go back and forth on this all day about the pros can cons about it and who it will affect and who we might loose entirely. I can guarantee you that it is at the top of our concerns. At the same time, we are going forward with this. I don't really see much point in addressing this further. Yes, it will unfortunately suck that we will be loosing some users from this. I don't see much to debate here though as we have already acknowledged that it is unfortunate but going to happen.
Curse has had the issue of being labeled a gaming site for a long time now. I am sure that they are trying their best to get that changed but I doubt anything will be changing on that front anytime soon.
We would love to discuss ways in which we could make things better. Not going forward with the change is currently not an option. If there are however aesthetic issues or functionality issues that you see we would love to hear about them and try to get them added for the launch. We are trying our best to make sally better so input on things that we can control is very welcome.

How does the nickname change effect this site as of now?
How does the nickname change effect this site as of now?
The one that comes to mind for me is security purposes. The fact that your sign in name is not the same as your displayed name means it would be a lot harder for someone to for instance try to hack your account specifically. I don't think I have seen really much of an instance of something like that being an issue on sally but it still is a security improvement.
I assume as well that it will free up a lot of old names from those who no longer post here as well as old gimmicks. I am not sure offhand if the nickname transfers with your account to all of the other curse affiliated sites or if it is a sally specific jump around the issue of an older curse account possibly having a name taken by a user here. I assume offhand that the nicknames for sally will be used exclusively for sally though due to potential conflicts with existing curse sites. This would by my primary assumption of why the system was implemented.

When I click on the MTGS logo in the beta it takes me to the main page. When I click on the logo here, it takes me to the forum home. Yes, yes, yes. I understand all of that. My question is not whether it happened, but how it happened. If you can figure that out, you might be able to find a way to fix it, and make everyone happier.
As much as some people are gonna have issues getting on during work hours (even though you should I don't know BE WORKING) isn't just a meta tag that's causing it? Something as simple as an id code for websites to be searched under? But granted sweeping the idea that something can even be done under the rug is just as helpful.

If there are however aesthetic issues or functionality issues that you see we would love to hear about them and try to get them added for the launch. We are trying our best to make sally better so input on things that we can control is very welcome.

The way you said it with your own personal history with some people here makes it hard to read you sometimes. But, I will take this to be the truth and I want others to do the same... this really doesn't need to be another pot shot CI thread.
I need EVERYONE to knock it off. Setting traps and finger pointing and when someone walks into those traps (for whatever reason) is a game that stopped being fun when I was 8. This is not a place for that.
Oh yeah... and I deleted the spam. If it isn't constructive comments about how to make the Beta better, I don't want it. Thanks!

How does the nickname change effect this site as of now?
LOL

Yeah okay, calling out trolling from moderators is totally not constructive to how you can make your site better.
Don't ignore mod requests. Suspension issued.

That has nothing to do with getting the Beta up and running. You were all asked to drop things not related to that and didn't. Suspension issued. -Galspanic

A truly great petition
When I click on the MTGS logo in the beta it takes me to the main page. When I click on the logo here, it takes me to the forum home. I only want to see the main page once a day, twice tops, but the forum home I want to see more often. Is it possible to have that replicated in the new version? Thank you for your answers.
Regards.
Murdock.
Yes, yes, yes. I understand all of that. My question is not whether it happened, but how it happened. If you can figure that out, you might be able to find a way to fix it, and make everyone happier.
See? Constructive.
Not sure everyone would be happier.
Huh? Aside from your employer, who is going to be happier having this site tagged and inaccessible while people are at work?
