Cameron: Friend of the gaymers after all this time? I think not. Promoted to Member without permission
Well my plans to watch Snakes fell through because my "best friend" is being a douche. I guess I'll have to wait for the broadway musical version to come to town *sigh*
So, I think it's been awhile since the last HGOtW.

Time to change that.
This week's entry is experiencing an overnight success with his new ABC Family channel show, Kyle XY. I don't know exactly what it's about, I think he has no bellybutton and might be an alien or something. Prior to this, his biggest credits were limited to playing a rentboy in an episode of Entourage and popping up as himself, a (decidedly flambouyant) struggling actor/waiter, on Kathy Griffin's reality show. So not a lot in the way of exposure, but .... pretty.
On a whim, I decided I would check the Iranian bombing thread in debate. After reading through it, I remembered why I don't visit the debate forum here.
The reason that many people do not go and debate there, particularly on such an issue as the Middle East, is the discussion is not rational at all. Mainly, it consists of people moralizing about Israel being "worse" than Iran or Lebanon or the reverse. And it gets really tiresome. The same arguments are made, and I have even made them myself. But I realized that finger pointing is pretty useless. For example, families of children who died both in Israel and in Lebanon could not care less about such moral posturing. It does not end the violence or address basic societal problems.
And, I think that the kind of rhetoric being engaged in is a violent rhetoric. Very oppositional. It is as if debate is not really a truth-seeking, educational or persuasive device, but rather an activity for intellectuals (or people who erroneously believe that they are intellectuals) to be vicious to one another, because that is an activity that they enjoy. Even though I disagree with Alan Dershowitz, the pro-Israel public intellectual who debated against Chomsky--probably I am biased against him--he said, "Thank GOD they don't have to make peace with the professors!"
Help has come in the form of a bit of basic algebra. I feel that it'll shed some light on your problem here.
Basically:
S + T = W
...S in this case stands for 'spam' and the T stands for 'light trolling'. And the W? That stands for 'Warning'. I love math. -- {mikeyG}
Frankly, I've had a hard time finding rational and intelligent debate anywhere. At least here there are moderators who lay the smack down on the worst offenses.
BTW, Goatchunx... is your avatar you or your newest crush?

Yes, sadly we've passed the golden age of the Debate forum (affectionately called "OM" by those who remember the good days); we're not even in the Gilded Age any longer. No more CHL pwning everyone, no more Highroller's Philosophy Threads; the best members have either left or never made the leap from MtgNews to Salvation. Out of the best members in the old OM, we have lost Senori, CHL, fadeblue, Highroller, Prizm, Verbal, and others.
There is a reason that my posting there has sharply declined.

I just assumed it was because of an increase in boom chicca waow waow.
Good luck moving into Chris's.
And Mikey that HGOTW did not go unnoticed (I've just been a little under the weather for the past few days)
There was this kyle xy poster at the mall for the longest time, and, like with the abercrombie and fitch poster at...welll abercrombie and fitch, I was stuck in front of it forever just staring. Thank you for bringing him here. Best part is his last name is the city I live in woot! (That totally means I'll see him here and make a go of it right? eh?)

You live in "XY"?
I could take him or leave him. He's definitely a pretty one, but he's always got this look on his face like he's confused. On the show, it's bothersome but at least it fits. He's even got it in your pictures, though!

Heh yeah he's gonna have a furrowed brow when he gets older no matter the thoughts behind the expression. sigh.
I have a nominee for the HGotW queue: Eric Balfour. Holy freakin' crap! Apparently he stars in an independant film called "Lie With Me" that (though straight) is chided by critics for basically being a porno. Sign me up!

I saw it. Well, not the full movie, but 'the good stuff'. Riveting. Well, not really. More pedestrian than not. But still .... peen.
Balfour will find his way into the HGOtW pantheon eventually. I only fast-tracked Matt Dallas because: a) I realized that the HGOtWs were skeweing older and I thought it was time to toss a few under-25s into the mix and b) he was on my mind after it was brought to my attention that the disgusting Perez Hilton has decided that Dallas will be the next closet case he'll drag out by any means necessary. Plus, the accompanying picture with the article was soooo pretty. Mmmmmm, sparkly wide eyes of innocence ...
On a completely unrelated note; I became an uncle this evening. Young Logan Nadelle Arafat slipped free from his meat prison I call Big Sis at a respectable eight pounds three ounces, much to the delight of all involved. My parents have even called a temporary detente to our version of the Cold War in honor of the event. We'll see if it'll last all the way to my big move in two weeks. I'm skeptical, but it doesn't really matter. By mid-September, I'll be wrist deep in diapers and bottles with little Logan, which is a significant step up from dinners with my parents.
@Goatchunx: I've noticed the same thing. The attitude in Debate seems to be more geared towards deflating a perceived enemy rather than explaining your points clearly or spreading understanding. I try to avoid being hostile myself, but sometimes it's easy to slip into it without even noticing.
@T2: Harkius, extremestan, Blinking Spirit, BenGreen, et al, are good though, wouldn't you say?

But the rainbow is an image of hope for many reasons, as it is a brilliant sight coming out of oftimes dismal weather.

Cool Mikey. I'm surprised your parents aren't throwing a fit about your presence around the child since they seem to find you to be such an abomination. Hopefully they'll stop chiding you for a long while.
Today is depressing A lot of people are going to college today and tomorow, and for whatever reason I'm pretty depressed about it. Which is weird because I've obviously been through it before and not had any troubles, but *shrug*
@T2: Harkius, extremestan, Blinking Spirit, BenGreen, et al, are good though, wouldn't you say?
I very much enjoy extremestan, Blinking Spirit, Furor, yourself, and a few others. As for some other members, I'm going to reserve comment.
Also, congrats Mikey
@Erasmus: Yes, it is extraordinarily depressing. A good number of my best friends are leaving within the next week for college, while some have already left. My friends are my family, and I will miss them greatly.
I generally like extremestan except when the topic revolves around religion. On one hand I have to respect the fact that he has put the effort into understanding all the logical arguments about his beliefs. But those arguments are so convoluted and inconsistent and require so many assumptions...it just makes me nuts.

My 11 year old cousin called me tonight, which was odd in itself. I had a bit of a falling out with his mother when I called her a ****ing **** (rhymes with cucking funt) in response to a disparaging remark she made about my brother. So I was a bit surprised to hear his voice.
He sounded very upset. I asked him what was wrong, and he informed me that the kids in the neighborhood have taken to calling him gay at every opportunity. At this point, he started crying. He asked me if he was gay.
I told him that I didn't know, but that I didn't think so. (It seemed like the right thing to say, as he seemed horrified by the prospect.) He then asked why, if he is not gay, do they insist on tormenting him. Was it a vibe he gave off? I comforted him, but it broke my heart. I eventually got him to stop crying, and even laughing. We spoke for almost an hour and a half, which was kinda cool. He's wicked smart, and rather witty for his age.

That is aweful. Failing his ability to not care about what the kids say or to otherwise be able to put an end to it, his parents should get in contact with the other kids' parents. That's a real ***** move on those kids parts.
One of the earliest social lesson I learned as a kid was that if people wanted to pick on you they would find a reason no matter what you did. If they make fun your clothes and you get new ones, then they make fun of something else. Your cousin isn't being called gay because people think he is, it's because they don't like him for some reason so they'll say whatever they think will upset him. And someone ought to beat every last one of them upside the head with a baseball bat.
