People should be aware that the link contains a massive casting spoiler for season 4. And yes, I'm not pleased. And I'll go into my feelings at length under a cut.
Personally, I felt the Dawsons story was taken about as far as it could go. Michael's character was assassinated six ways from Sunday, and he wasn't a particularly awesome character to begin with. All we'd be left with if he hadn't whisked Walt away on that boat would be an arc of guilt and redemption and a possible clash between him and the rest of the Lostaways (I say possible because betrayal doesn't seem to have a lot of mileage with that crowd who forget backstabbings pretty much as they happen). And that arc is more or less identical to the dozen or so other characters similarly pained by guilt and striving in their own ways for redemption. So I'm not interested in exploring that yet again with a character I never liked.
That said, we still don't know in what capacity Michael will return. He may very well only appear in the flash-forwards we've been assured we'll be getting next year. That would also conveniently solve the issue of Walt's sudden pubescent growth as well.
I'm just not overly thrilled with Michael rejoining the island. It would make Ana Lucia and Libby's deaths even more meaningless since at least before the end result was two Lostaways escaping the island.
Though I must say my unhappiness is calmed somewhat by not caring. Lost has never quite been the show I wanted it to be and mostly fell short of its potential so I've more or less severed my personal feelings from the series so I can just watch it unfold as it may.
This is the first time I've really posted on this particular thread, as I spend most of my time in the Custom Cards forum, but I wanted to say: Anyone who is looking for clues and answers, a good source is <snip>, they have FREE streaming video of every episode, even the ones not yet on DVD. It helps me clear things up when I need to go back to a certain episode.
If the end of the last season is any indication of things to come I suspect that the Losties will meet up with Michael at some point. I have no idea why they didn't just kill him and keep Walt. Maybe they knew father and son had a bond that was strong enough to cause trouble in the long run. Let's face it, neither of them would have ever joined the Others. So letting them leave may have been a way to both stop rescue attempts and quash any possible retribution Michael could visit on them.
Here's a scenario: Michael and Walt make it back to the US. Having been assumed dead Michael tells a half-truth about being stranded on an island and then finding the boat that brought them back. So Michael and Walt get an outpouring of sympathy and start their life anew. Things are going good until news comes of the resuce of many of the passengers of the lost Oceanic flight. Michael begins to panic b/c he knows he's lied to people and he doesn't know how much the other survivors will tell.
We don't know how much they told...yet. I have a feeling that the body in the casket is Michael though. I don't know why but I think its him. I've read the notion that its Locke or Ben but I don't subscribe to those theories because I doubt that either would leave the island willingly. I doubt Jack held a gun to Locke or Ben and made them get into the chopper. He was probably glad to leave them behind. *sigh* I'll be happy when the season starts up again. I heard a nasty rumor that that won't be happening until February.:mad:

I agree, for the most part...I definitely think this news is a major push in the direction of Michael being in the coffin. I'm skeptical that Michael and Walt would be able to rejoin society without keeping a very low profile, including assumed names, but so much is up in the air now that it would be difficult to say (I'm mostly basing this off the scanned obit, which is not necessarily cannon).
But assuming that it was Michael that killed himself, what about his death would make Jack so despondent that he was about to follow suit? We know Jack desperately wants to get back to the Island, claiming that "we made a mistake" by leaving. What information could Michael have, considering he's been out of the loop for so long?
I think the answer has to do with Locke and Walt's connection. Walt somehow gives Locke some kind of information about what happens as a result of Jack, Kate and whoever else leaving the island...he's communicating from the future (that's how they'll explain his appearance). Locke will clue us in to those dire consequences, and as usual, Jack will be skeptical. Over the course of his trying to convince Jack about what's "supposed" to happen, I'm thinking that he will describe Michael's future death in detail. When we see future-Jack in Through the Looking Glass, he's already afraid he made the wrong choice...seeing the obituary confirms it.
Way I see it, the show seems to be moving in one of two directions:
1. The flashforwards represent a possible future. Jack will be presented with a choice in which he will either make a mistake or not. We will see what happens when Jack makes that mistake, and then Jack will make a different choice, leaving an uncertain future to be realized in season five.
2. The flashforwards represent the future after Jack's choice. At the end of Season Four, Jack will find a way back to the island. So essentially, the flashforwards, which would have to either continue or be readdressed in later episodes, would present a sort of season 4.5, with season 5 representing the return.
I gotta say I'm incredibly excited about this season. Now that they've made the wise decision to cut the number of episodes per season I think the pace will increase significantly, and the direction they're moving has me thrilled.
I'm a little surprised they showed so much in the trailer when I saw it on television today (I guess the ABC execs felt as though NBC was outdoing them in that regard) but I am also pretty pleased with the way things are looking, even if it means eight episodes from now I am going to be even more pissed at the networks.
In regards to the poll, I voted for Locke. As screwed up as some of the people had it, he was handicap and truly lonely.
(This post was originally its own thread. I didnt think They'd combine it due to the poll. I would have made it never ending if that was the case)
Well, there's not really a whole lot of need for two Lost discussion threads, especially when the original was sorely lacking for activity (not unexpected given the massive break between seasons). But on the upside, I did edit the poll to have no closing date.
Oh, and I would say that most of the Lostaways had particularly crappy lives pre-Island (though I think both Boone and Shannon weren't as unlucky as others, but then again, they did both die a few weeks into Island life so ymmv), but I find that Sawyer's backstory draws out the most sympathy from me. Mostly because his rotten backstory reaches all the way back to his early childhood with things that were tragic and so far out of his control.
MikeyG's unhappiness only increases...

I'm not about to get into it.
I'm just curious to see the vote result from this question.
Who had the worst life pre-island?

If I forgot someone, write it in. I'm pretty sure I didn't. (That is, characters who had episode life clips dedicated to them)
