This thread is for the discussion of my latest article, MTGCast #87: Level 3, Schmevel 3!. We would be grateful if you would let us know what you think, but please keep your comments on topic.
I am confused about something. Why is Offalsnout preferable to Tormod's Crypt? Is this something to do with Pithing Needle?
Most I've ever spent on a single item: Lorwyn Tournament pack for the online release. And that's unlikely to change unless I one day start playing Constructed.

Another Fonzie good show there guys, thanks for fitting in a bit of multiplayer discussion for me
the most expensive item I've bought would be a box of Lorwyn boosters at $120 Australian (or US$100 approximately at the time) This is from ebay, to buy in stores here a booster box is usually $185, which is roughly twice the price from american stores. I imagine it's because magic is quite a niche hobby down here, and the smaller demand means stores have to charge more to survive. I don't think I've bought singles for more than $5 each, though I'll be intrigued to see if anyone has bought any $50+ singles, and if it was worth it.
edit: I should also mention, blackborder (who had lorwyn boxes for US$80) refused to ship booster boxes to Australia! I have bought singles from them before, so does anyone know if they have an agreement with wizards to not sell boxes to certain regions/outside the US?

I imagine Maro has a huge ancient book in his office titled "Tempo Defined" and inside it is hollowed out and there is a bottle of whiskey
Althogh not that impressive I am currently bidding on a Gifts Given and could spend around 20-30$ the most I would have spent on a single. It will be worth it for it is going straight into type 4. (A special format where you play from one stack and have infinite mana) It can wreck combos in deck or just tear out their counterspells. And it looks really cool.
With Offalsnout having flash, it is alot easier to bluff you opponent into overcommiting. Though that's just my opinion.
The most I ever spent on cards was about $55.00 for a playset of avatar of woes. This was about a month before TImeSpiral
I had bought them just to have in my collection. I was ticked off when I found out that they were being reprinted as timeshifted. They lost alot of value in my trading circle.
But when damnation was printed, it was like christmas again. They final became playable in my mono-black decks.
Another great Podcast guys! As White Goodman, played by Ben Stiller, from Dodgeball would say: "Joanie loves Chachi!"
I think on a collection of cards the most i've spent was buying one box of lorwyn after it was released. As far as a single would go, I'm sure it would be $20 on a revised dual land about 5 or so years ago.
The most amount of money I've ever spent was at the Ravnica Pre-release. The Dimir mill deck was sure to be a huge hit, so I shelled out $65 on a combination of Glimpse the Unthinkables and Circu, Dimir Lobotomists. I'm glad that transaction worked out!
Ever since that, I've had a fear of spending a lot of money on singles. If I were to buy 4 Tarmogoyfs right now, I would wake up tomorrow to find they've fallen to $0.50 each.
i would have to say that my biggest purchase so far has been a complete set of 4 planar chaos , the moment magic's website previewed damnation i knew i had to have four no matter what , it was just seeing the picture of wrath of god turning into damnation was so unbelievable that they would make wrath into a black card there was no way i was not going to have my 4 . the funny thing is that in my area the was so much planar opened up by everyone that we all ended up 2 to 3 sets each , well thanks guys for another great show . oh by the way the fonz says heyyyyyyy!
I sold an anime deck box from the movie AIR to a good friend of mine for 70$ dollars. I wouldn't sell it to him, but he kept raising the price and finally I caved in. 70$ bucks more I had to spend drafting :D. The company that made those doesn't make them anymore which is why he was willing to pay so highly. I'm sure he would have gone higher though.
I spent 300 once on buying the rough basis for what eventually became No Stick, and random odds and ends for friends. The order included Strands, Chants, Decree of Justice, Wrath of God, and other such U/W Control stuff.
I spent like $100 on a box of Time Spiral. Me and my friends would often do non-sanctioned drafts, and so it was much cheaper to buy the box and draft from that than to buy draft packs from the store.
Of course, soon after (and before I get to draft any, since I was busy), I moved. At the new place, *no one* did unsanctioned drafts. I shed a single tear and had to open up all the packs alone in my basement. Of course, it was Time Spiral, so the cards sucked, *and* I was out a bunch of money that could've gone towards drafting. Sigh!
Great last show Dom! You deserve a Potsie Roll! (You know, a tootsie roll? You see it's this little chocolate... oh never mind)
And I totally agree Derik, Earwig Squad makes me excited as well, and I usually don't care for "remove cards from your oponant's library" either but this one seems great. Oh, and welcome!
I think the most I've ever spent on a single magic "thing" was a box/fat pack deal: $110 + tax. Although at the Lorwyn prerelease I spent $120 and I'm still not entirely sure how. I didn't leave the building all day from 7:30AM to 10:00PM and I brought 120 in cash with me. By 10:00PM I had spent it all. Oh well. I got some great stuff though including one of those huge Lorwyn Posters with the rarity symbol on it!
Anyway, if you pick me for the prize, I promise to cut taxes and provide free health care for everyone!!! Oh wait, wrong contest.
What's the most you have ever spent on a magic item? (e.g. pack, singles, set, collectibles, sky is the limit)
Ok this one is all over the place. If I counted collections I say I spent a total of 2k in one shot*during my days selling other card games with friends* Involved alot of fun stuff.
Packs: 40 x 7 on legends packs Was happy cause I pulled a Drain in one:)
Singles: Going into a pre-release with 400 bucks. Walking out with a mox pearl and a few more type one goodies:) Almost as bad as me dropping 70 a pop on drains.
And the best: I spend 10 bucks on a set:)
2nd best: Buying up a bunch of Ah My goddess, AIR, and other anime cases when they were worth 4-5 bucks each long ago....boya
Great show! Dom, you will be missed, I can't wait 'til you come back and visit us. Gavin, thank you for only teasing the british accent... I would have pulled out my lush curls if I had to listen to that for another hour.
The most money I ever spent on Magic was the day Alliances was released. I was like 12 at the time and I had been saving money $5 a week in my student bank account. I had saved nearly $200. I told my parents a limited amount of this set was going to be released and it would be a good investment for me to pick some. I grabbed 2 boxes at $180... as a 12 year old, I felt like a boss. I opened the set like 3x over... 5 copies of Lord of Tresserhorn. Of course today, there is nothing left of it. Still a great investment... kept me happy for atleast a month.
This story isn't about me, its about this guy spending around $35 for one Wizened Cenn. ONE. The FNM was about to start but the guy really badly needed it for his Kithkin deck. He goes over to the store owner and buys a few packs. He pulled Guile, Garruk and some other cheap rares. (HE GOT A GARRUK!) No Wizened Cenns though. He pulls his wallet and gets enough to buy which he said was his last three packs.
He pulls some jank rare on the 1st pack. He pulls Doran on his second which completes his set. The last came as a cheap rare BUT IT HAD A WIZENED CENN.
The most expensive single Magic purchase I ever made is actually arriving at my apartment right now. I've been playing for several years, but until this weekend I've never made it to a prerelease. So for Morningtide I'm going all out, with a hotel room at the event site and the whole nine yards. My playgroup is crazy about drafting, and since I understand that prerelease drafting is just Mor-Mor-Mor, which is probably a silly format, I really had no choice in this matter:
Box of Lorwyn - $100
500 Basic Lands - $10
Going back to the room to draft Lor-Lor-Mor with Fonzie, Potsie, Al, and the Cunninghams - Priceless
Most I ever spent on magic related items? About $320 for a fish deck for GP Columbus, aka GP Flash. I had some of the cards already but had to dish out the big bucks for 3 Tundra, 2 Underground Sea (the lists wanted 3 but I refused to pay for 3), 1 Scrubland, and playsets of Force of Will, Polluted Delta, Flooded Strand, and Meddling Mage. At least I already had Dark Confidant and Jittes, and since I didn't want to spend any more money I substituted Looter il-Kor over Serra Avenger and Sword of Light and Shadow over its fire and ice variant.
Interesting story: I won a match at GP Columbus vs. WB homebrew. My opponent was able to kill all my lands and make me discard all my cards, but couldn't kill or even block a random creature with a Sword of Light and Shadow on it ("These Smothers and Swords are useless!"). I also beat a Fish mirror because my opponent couldn't block Looter il-Kor equipped with Jitte. If I had put in Serra Avenger instead, I would have lost the game, since my opponent had Mom + Avenger.
Loved the show! Also, Dom is definitely cooler than the Fonz.
The most I've ever spent on Magic is $84 on a box of Ravnica. It was nuts. I got 2 Birds, 3 duals, and 5 Chars(seriously). I then traded in the duals I wasn't using for about $40 in packs. I got another Birds and another dual. The most I've ever spent on a single pack is $7.50 on a pack of Torment. I wanted a Chainer's Edict and/or Tainted Isle. I didn't get either but its ok.
Once I saw a guy buy 6 boxes of TS. He had everyone in the shop opening packs and it still took over an hour.
Potsie. I've enjoyed MTGcast for a while now, but only been a member of the boards for a short time.
I guess I spend more than the average player, given my position of running tourneys, buying the collections of defunct players, and taking trade-ins for a local store. When Lorwyn was released, we cracked 9 boxes for singles. I grabbed up some of the stuff I really liked, totalling close to $150. That's about the biggest single purchase I've made.
That said, the biggest single cost I've incurred for the sake of Magic is probably coming up this weekend. My wife is incredibly supportive of my cardboard crack habit, and quite understanding of the fact that every Friday night from here to eternity will not be a date night, but there is a give and take involved. Right now, she's in the British Virgin Islands on a 10-day vacation. I get to go to the prerelease. To sum it up, Mastercard-style:
Gas: $40
Food and drinks: $50
Entry fees: $60
Buying singles: $100
Sending your wife on vacation: $1000
Buying whatever you want to at the Morningtide Prerelease without any guilt: Priceless

If you blame luck on all of your failures, you're never going to get better...
Still at work and can't listen the cast yet, but nice to read, that you found a third person to speak in the casts. Welcome Derek (unless you start trying phony accents :D)
My largest MtG-related purchase was a new fridge coulpe of years back... Yep, a fridge (and not the Billy the-type either). Actually it had a freezer attached, but nevermind that now.
I was just starting my master's thesis and nearly out of cash, so a new 570 Euro fridge was bit out of my reach. Oh woe. But the milk will go sour quite fast without a fridge, so I had to part from my cherished beta Black Lotus, that I had bought at 90 $ 1996. In the end that paid for all of my expenses for that month and part of the next in addition of the fridge. Eating fresh food > three black bordered mana on turn 1.
For some reason I go the urge to start listening old Tweezer song "Buddy Holly," while reading through this thread. I wonder why?
