@masamune: I totally agree with your statement that card shop owners can be ripoffs. For example when I went into my shop before the change in management they were charging $16 for a Grinning Demon. I go by a combo of a Card Selling website and Scrye and neither of them had anything near $16 as a price:mad:. I almost felt like "liberating" a couple copies, but I didn't:rolleyes:
But with the change in management, FNM was brought to the store and the prices were actually closer to what most price guides list at.
I manage a card shop, and I still can't believe some of the things that stores will try to get away with. Isn't the whole point to get people to come back to the store? I was recently in a shop and I was trading for some cards. Even though he said he used Scrye to price, he kept referring to a printout behind the counter for pricing, and somehow overpriced the cards I wanted by about 300% against a Scrye I checked at our store later. I asked what the common and uncommon prices were at his store, and he said "25 and 50 cents, but everything good will be a little higher". I guess I'm either too trusting or too naive, because I assumed he meant chase uncommons like Cabal Therapy or Witness would be more, but it turns out "good" means "anything I want". After he attempted to sell me $2 Phantatogs, I decided to not return to his store.
I do feel bad for stores that actually use Scrye to price, though, since all of their pricing trends are 2 months behind the rest of the world. We use Starcitygames, and it has worked out very well for both us and our customers.

I think the value of a card can be different according to what region your in and the size of the shop you deal with. For instance, StarCityGames may charge more for a card, because they have higher operation costs than say a small spaced, non-online, local shop. In addition, the value of a card can be different, based upon the skill level in your area. I helped take some kids to a JSS event many years ago and the shop we went to had several singles books. Invasion had JUST came out a few weeks back. I asked how much Blazing Specter, Skizzik, and Tsabo's Decree were. They said if it didn't have a price tag on the front of the pocket, then it was a $1. Once I saw that, I bought what they had and asked one of the local players there why they sold them so cheap. He exclaimed that the majority of players in that area were casual players and they rarely had T2 events. I looked at other books and glanced at cards that had rotated out of T2 for that period and still dominated extended.
For this reason, I never like to just go by a given value from a certain shop. In all reality, the best way to determine a card's value is to weigh it versus the price for auction items that have completed. Even then, you have to realize that if you purchase from an online shop, they have a potential mark up for providing you the service of sorting, speed of delivery, reliability, safety (in most cases), and selection. Add shipping onto all of that.
Stock can also be a factor in pricing which is usually derived from the players in the area. If you have a very low level of good players in an area, then Chameleon Colossus may not be as highly sough after as say, Sliver Legion. For this reason, they may be selling Sliver Legion for $10 and Chameleon Colossus for $5.
Moving on...
So far, for this year, they've changed the art on all of the cards they've released for FNM (Remand & Tormod's Crypt). I would think this to be a trend, since it doesn't matter if they reuse old artwork for cards, as they don't have to pay royalties for cards used as promotional tools. However, Eternal Witness has some great art and although someone out there could redo the art and do it justice, it's hard to not love the nostalgic old art that Nielsen did for this card.
My best is that they go with some new art by Guay or someone.
I manage a card shop, and I still can't believe some of the things that stores will try to get away with. Isn't the whole point to get people to come back to the store?
You'd think so. I wasn't there to see it or I would have yelled at him, but the guy who owns the place I FNM at traded some kid who is just starting Magic 4 Morningtide boosters for his foil Mutavault. I don't want to support this guy at all but I don't know what to do, there's nowhere else to play Magic competitively here.
I wish they'd keep the old art, but I really want to see what the new art looks like anyhow. I doubt they can top the old one though.
I live in Northern Alberta (Fort McMurray) and the closest location that supports a FNM is in Edmonton (a 4 hour drive). We don't even have a hobby / card store in town. There only place that sells cards in town is a little store that's more of a magazine / cigar store then a card store (no singles or anything like that .... just overpriced packs).
But if any of you get spare witnesses, feel free to send a couple my way! haha
Seriously to all the people who are talking about how much the local shop rips them off you need to do yourself a favor and stop buying from them and just play the FNM events for the Promos.
To get your cards you need to get an account with an unnamed finance site *cough rhymes with playpal* and go and get lots from an unnamed auction site *cough rhymes with gheebay*.
My girlfriend inherited her father's comic shop and she lets me handle the MtG section and it has been making a ton of money because I buy lots then take the average price from Mtgmintcard.com and Starcity then drop the price 10%. I love to play MtG and since I have been managing the shop our FNM attendance has been incredible... but some shop owners are greedy. Don't feed the greed and make a killing yourself or at least get a deal from somewhere else.
Do we know yet if this has alternate art? Does anyone have a scan of one or a link to an image? I'm excited to see what this is going to look like even though I won't be able to play FNM next month because I'm going to be in SERE school.
The two FNMs released this year alone (Remand, Tormod's Crypt) have had new, alternate art. I can't remember off the top of my head if they've done alternate art in years past on them.
i dont think FMN cards have ever had alt. art, they just use the art thats been done already.
My thought is that alternate art on Remand and Tormod's Crypt set the standard for this year's FNM, and as such they will continue doing alternate art. Glancing at my FNM stuff, I don't think they've ever done Alternate art cards as FNM promos prior to 2008. They have a lot of old cards in new frames, but the art has always remained the same.
I for one hope they keep up the alternate art cards, as well as keeping up the high standard of widely playable cards. As cool as a card like wonder is in extended Madness, there just aren't a lot of decks that put it to use. Remand, on the other hand, seems like it would see play in a wide variety of extended decks. Even if you don't want to play it, the alternate art is pretty sweet for collectors.
I believe that bringing back old cards with updated layout was an excellent way for FNM promos, that means using the ORIGINAL art. we get to see many older cards brought back to life in core sets (and sometimes expert sets - like BOP in Ravnica), and many of them have alternate art, so why in god's name are they doing this with FNM too? it's such a shame... getting old cards with original artwork perinted using the shiny new layout was a real treat to have... now we lost that too. sad.
@Matrix_lord: We don't know if we had lost that, just because the first three cards of this year are from sets post 8th edition frames it doesn't rule out the possibility of having older cards. Although it is true that with all the cards pre-8th edition rotating out on october from Extended it is a slim possibility. It is also possible that they will go with a bang with some surprises for all of us.

ah! i guess thats what i get for not paying attention to FMN for the whole year. lol.

I do hope that you're right, and that's not the line Wizards is going to follow for the rest of the FNM promos
What exactly does one have to do to earn one of these? Just show up? Once, Twice, X times? Someone pls. fill me in. (on FNM, that is)
.
As long as you're a decent player you just need to show up.
The way prizes are distributed depends on each store, but they basically get four of those promos per tourney. The store I go to gives top 2 a card each, and randomly gives out the other 2. It's usually 3 rounds, sometimes 4 if enough peeps show up. Standard FNM level of competition, so if I show up an entire month I'm pretty much assured three promos, maybe four if the day where everything goes wrong with my deck I win the door prize.

We won't have a picture most likely, till around the last week of the month. FNm stores start receiving theirs and that's when they start getting scanned in for events and/or popping up on auction sites.
