Basically, post here and tell me your experience with D&D, RPGs, and online gameplay. Then tell me what kinda race and class you would like to play as. Try to keep it simple
I've played D&D a bit with my friends in real life, and I'm pretty familar with the system. I can make characters, although I still need a bit of advice on feats and whatnot once we get beyond the basic PHB stuff. I own the 3.5 versions of the PHB, DMG, and MM. I don't really play RPGs much outside of that (I hate hate HATE the current trends in CRPGs, for various reasons that I'll spare you having to wade through). I haven't tried to play D&D online, but I read through the tutorials, and got the general idea.
I'm not quite sure what I want to play yet. Will this game have things to do for a skillmonkey-type character, or would I be better off making something more suited for combat?

Kudos to Mr. Stuff for the adorable drummer avvy.
Kudos to Sephiroth Owa for the random banner. Tell me, ARE there similarities?
You see, part of what makes playing Magic so special is figuring out the good R&D decisions from the bad ones. If they were all good, it would take away an important element of the game: complaining about Magic on the Internet. - Mark Rosewater
I have zero experience with any of this besides roleplaying a character. I understand the basic concept of the roll, add/subtract, compare D20 system, but I've never played under it.
Basically I want each of you to take a class for each of the roles--warrior, healer, rogue, and spellcaster. I will be providing all four of you with barebones character sheets which you will be allowed to fill in.
I will pick:
Ability Scores
Hit Points
Skills
Feats
Weapons/Armor
Gear
Spells
Languages
You will pick:
Race
Class
Name
Gender
Appearance
Personality
Miscellaneous
I know this might be a bit limiting to some, but it'll be best since the goal of this tutorial is not only to introduce D&D to those who haven't played it, but also to introduce the concept of online role-playing to all of you and to give you a (better) hold on how the rules in D&D work. Even if you have played before, you might learn something!
www.d20srd.org is the website I go to all the time for P&PI business.
If you have questions about what a particular class is about, ask away.
Edit: If you would feel more comfortable picking stuff on your own from the list above, I won't stop you, but anything not from the Player's Handbook will require my approval (I'm sure it'll be okay).
I'd just like to pop in and offer my help here as well. I'm not officially associated with this game in any way, but I'm happy to help those of you who need it.
That link Alacar posted is one of the most useful online D&D references you'll ever find. For now you'll want to stay in the far left column (Core Rules), and really just in classes and races for now.
Anyway, feel free to PM me or the like if you need help. I'm sure Alacar can handle everyone, but it can take a while for one person to help four new(er) players through char gen (I would know, I've done it before in real life :p).
I'd like to play an elf bard, and I'd like my perform ability to be singing, as I want to be able to inspire and fight at the same time. Other than that, I'd like to leave my combat stats up to you, if that's ok. I'm not too picky about my stats as long as I can still feel useful. Also, is there somewhere where I can find a large list of elven names? I'm terrible at coming up with names, and I don't want to just pick names out of the list in the PHB, as that seems rather uncreative.
Thanks!

The Druid is a sort of dual-role. The druid is in tune with nature's power, and can cast druidic spells to aid the party, as well as provide some amount of healing--in addition, he can be a mighty warrior with the power of nature at his side. His most notable traits involve his animal companion, wildshaping into animal forms (at later levels), and being able to cast spells, mostly boosting allies and summoning animals, in addition to being a secondary healer (which, at this low of level, is fine for the 'healer' role)
Most classes can fulfill a dual role--the standard classes with singular, but more focused roles are that of the fighter, the cleric, the rogue, and the wizard.
As for you being a gnome, the gnome is small in size and gifted with a variety of minor bonuses, such as having a few spell-like abilities. You can read more about each race's bonuses and such here--it might not make much sense to someone who's not played, but it helps a little. If you have any questions, please, ask!
Well, I suppose I'll take the the tank-n-spank role. Dwarf Fighter for me plz.
As for my experience, I've played a few 3.0 games with my brothers, and I've played around a little with a few DnD based video games. Not much in the way of online RPing experience, but I don't think I'll have too much trouble picking it up.
Very well, Mad Tapper, good to hear. Looks like we have a rogue/spellcaster, a healer/spellcaster, and a warrior type. Pretty much lets our last player pick whatever he wants.
Myrf Elf Bard

That's perfectly fine to play with. Please let me know just how much of the character you want a hand in creating--otherwise I'll spit out a basic 1st level sheet for you all.
Like I said, I just want my perform ability to be singing, so I can inspire while I fight. Unless you want to give me a bladed lute or something

Would you mind PMing me a blank character sheet? I'm comfortable creating my own character, but I've never done one on a forum and I want to get the character sheet format right. You said Mamelon Point Buy system, correct?
Don't know what my equipment is going to be, so that's about all I can fill out until I know what I'm starting with (greatsword plz?). Also, the d20srd site did not list deities (or at least I couldn't find any there). What's a good deity for a chaotic good dwarf?
EDIT: Char sheet updated and ready to go!
Player Name: The Mad Tapper
Character Name: Barum
Class and Level: Fighter 1
Race: Dwarf
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Deity: Agnostic (maybe someday I'll have a god)
Size: Medium
Age: 53
Gender: Male
Height: 4'1"
Weight: 141 lb.
Eyes: Hazel
Hair: Auburn
Skin: Dark and ruddy
STR 18 (+4) (18 base)
DEX 16 (+3) (16 base)
CON 18 (+4) (16 base, +2 racial)
INT 12 (+1) (12 base)
WIS 14 (+2) (14 base)
CHA 10 (+0) (12 base, -2 racial)
Power Attack (1st) Can subtract amount up to BAB from attack roll and add to damage roll. Decide before making attack. Weapon Focus: Greatsword (Fighter 1) +1 to attack rolls with greatswords.
Land speed unaffected by medium/heavy armor or medium/heavy load.
Darkvision 60'.
Wields dwarven waraxes and dwarven urgroshes as martial weapons.
+4 to ability checks to resist being bull rushed or tripped (ground only).
Can make Search check for unusual stonework within 10' without actively searching.
EDIT EDIT: Here's a link to my newly created character sheet thread
Well done! You seem to know your stuff about D&D character sheets. Equipment is easy enough.
As for deities, there are some D&D deities out there, but don't worry about that one. Armor: Scale mail (+4 AC, ACP -4, speed 20', 30 lb.) Weapons Dwarven greatsword (1d10, crit 19-20/x2, 8 lb., slashing)
Shortbow (1d6, crit x3, range inc. 60', 2 lb., piercing) Gear Backpack with waterskin, one day's trail rations, bedroll, sack, flint and steel, quiver with 20 arrows. Gold
While dwarves have a slightly lower land speed they are still considered medium sized creatures. So shouldn't the greatsword be a 2d6 instead of a 1d10? Also, just to confirm, 2-handed melee weapons get 1.5x Str bonus to damage, right?
Here's my updated sheet. I went ahead and listed the sword as a 1d10 for now.
EDIT: Char sheet merged with previous for Alacar's convenience.
