This thread is for the discussion of my latest article, MTGCast #95 - Hybrid Mana Hijinks!. We would be grateful if you would let us know what you think, but please keep your comments on topic.
Show is sounding great. Tom, I'm going to send you some of my Player Rewards Promos that I have laying around. You've sent me a couple items via this show. Knowing that you've never owned one only makes me feel the need to send you some even more.
Glad the technical difficulties didn't rear their ugly heads in this episode, good show guys Also glad to see that even without the most important and indispensable member of the cast the show held together
My favourite keyword ability is, without doubt, Super Haste. It's only present on one creature, the Rocket-Powered Turbo Slug from Unhinged, and it reads as follows:
Super haste (This may attack the turn before you play it. (You may put this card into play from your hand, tapped and attacking, during your declare attackers step. If you do, you lose the game at the end of your next turn unless you pay this card's mana cost during that turn.))
It's the only keyword with reminder text for it's reminder text that I know of!
Those Player Rewards promo cards are actually enticing me to attend some FNMs, something I haven't done before - which i suppose was WotCs cunning plan all along...
And as far as smother-proof extended creatures go, it's hard to beat Scornful Egotist. Sure, he dies to Shower of Sparks, but that powerhouse rotated a long time ago!

I imagine Maro has a huge ancient book in his office titled "Tempo Defined" and inside it is hollowed out and there is a bottle of whiskey
I think my favorite keyword is shadow. I started playing Magic when Tempest came out, so shadow is a nostalgic favorite of mine. The art for the shadow creatures are really awesome, as they look like these weired twisted, mutants. (such as Dauthi Slayer or Soltari Lancer) Have you ever seen creatures that look like that? Shadow creatures are tottaly unique!
Shadow was pretty a powerful ability as well... maybe even too powerful. A great keyword!
15:15 is hilarious: "...This will not be in the show..."

I'm feeling that Beseech the Queen would be 3 in all zones, except while it's on the stack, where it would be 3, 4, 5 or 6.
I think that the Kinscear Harpoonist looks like kithkin, and you can see the eyes, kind of like evil thoughtweft.
Wanderbrine Rootcutters looks like evil, rootwater thief-like Nemesis merfolk.
My favourite would be, and people will hate me for this, the prophecy rhystic cards because this was the set that came out just as I started playing magic. Rhystic Syphon was such a good card. This was in the time when my and my friends were playing big creatures like Mungha Wurm every turn and they would tap out and i'll catch them for 5 life, good times...

There's no penalty for failing to sacrifice a Homonculus.
My three favorite mechanics are Buyback, Flashback, and Madness. I was a U/G Madness player for a long time. I even played the Mr. Teeth (Psycatog) deck for a while as well. Both decks used cards that had Madness (Circular Logic and Basking Rootwalla) and Flashback (Chainer's Edict and Roar of the Wurm). But my all time favorite ability is Buyback because I loved playing Extended Stasis with Claws of Gix and then once you get enough mana, cast Stasis and buyback Capsize at the end of opponent's every turn. U/G Madness is fun and fast, but it's not like the feeling of a true lock down with mono blue Stasis.
Hmm...I've got to say that my favorite 'mechanic' is...does being able to tap lands for mana count as a mechanic? 'Cause I enjoy being able to play spells, thanks to the fact that WotC allows me to tap my lands to add mana to my mana pool. It's totally broken.
(Seriously, though, I really like Splice onto Arcane, which should be coming back at some point due to its awesomeness; Kinship is pretty cool, because being able to do awesome stuff for free is cool business; Split Second is spiffy, just because it's so fast. "Where did my Psychatog go? I was going to win next turn. I just turned my head for a second..." "You mean for a split second? What a major lapse in judgement.")
Additionally, a very cool Extended creature that doesn't die to Smother is Draco. What can I say? I really like giant artifact dragons going for the win. (I almost wrote 'rampaging' instead of 'going', but I realized that Draco, even if he wants to, can't be Teeka's Dragon.)
I realize that I forgot to mention EDH earlier, which is nonsensical because it's my favorite format ever. Basically, since there is a legendary creature for every color combination (except 4-color combos. stupid non-legendary Nephilim...) post-Planar Chaos, it matters more what colors you want to use. I advise something involving U or G, as there are some CRAZY good U and G cards in multiplayer, and many of them only get better in EDH. Personally, I like Intet, the Dreamer, but I'm a sucker for Guided Passage, so that might influence it a little.
I have no problems with cursing. I always feel like the sort of people who buy that cliche are the same ones who think that every bully is secretly insecure. Life isn't as simple as our kindergarten teachers taught us.
My favourite would be, and people will hate me for this, the prophecy rhystic cards because this was the set that came out just as I started playing magic.
Oh yeah, the rhystic cards were great! To be honest, Prophecy is one of my favorite sets and I think it has some of the best and unique card interactions. Just don't tell anyone I said that...
Not only were they fun to play with, but some of them were really good. I distinctly remember wrecking some people with playing a bunch of Wild Mights in one attack quite a few times. No one ever suspects a Spore Frog to deal 11 damage in one attack. :xd:
Rhystic was fun because it led to some good bluffing where you'd have to wonder if it was safe tap out or hold back spells because they could blast you with a giant creature. Rhystic cards are great, they should bring them back. Now that I think about it...is it too late for me to change rhystic to my favorite mechanic?
Oh and Tom, I remember that Jay Moulder Salazar (sorry if I spelled that wrong...) who used to do the House of Cards articles on Wizards did a few articles on making a Blood Clock deck. It had Choice of Damnations in it that seemed to work pretty well. You should look them up, they might give you some good ideas for your deck!
In order to win through a commander dealing damage in EDH, the damage has to be combat damage. No easy wins with Karvek the Merciless.
As for favorite mechanics, I have 2 I like.
Convoke - using creatures to pay mana costs is cool.
Flash - Creatures/Enchantments at instant speed is a nice mechanic that has a lot of design value from surprise defenders to dealing with counterspell decks.
The most obivious commander that springs to mind is Doran, the Siege Tower. Build sort of an aggro rock deck, putting stuff that would go in the type 2 and extended Doran decks, it certainly wouldn't be cheap though. I have been kicking around a Teferi, Mage of Zephyr list, that can be really good depending on matchups, basically it's mono U control with Teferi as your commander. Mono U control is pretty solid at 40 life, not to mention doing offal stuff like Hindering people's commanders.
I have to say my favorite mechanic is Ninjitsu. I really hope they print more ninjas, because ninjas are cool. I get a warm fuzzy feeling every time I ink-eyes somebody. The best part about ninjas is that they become more unexpected as the mechanic ages. I play a lot of singleton online, and nobody sees good ol' ink-eyes coming.
Good stuff that doesn't die to Smother: Spiritmonger good ol' underplayed 6/6 regenerator for 5 mana. I think I'm going to take a deck that plays 3 spiritmongers to a PTQ because it's so awesome.
My favorite keyword mechanic has to be Transmute. It is just so versatile since it let you have a lot of demonic tutors depending on how you built your deck. Too bad it got the axe in online prismatic...but oh well. They don't like them tutors...Don't know why Vess is still allowed in online prismatic.
A good extended creature that doesn't die to smother is Keiga, the Tide Star. I always like 5/5 flying control magics that cannot be disenchanted. Very powerful

I am looking for Date Stamped promos from Khans of Tarkir block so I can finish my set. Check my wants if you have any.
Currently offering 2 non-foil Kolighan's Command for a Date Stamped foil!
I just got into EDH also mainly because of the Commander version on MTGO since finding a group in my area that is well versed in variant MTG is just about impossible. I am considering running Brian Stoutarm for a Standard Legal Version that I have found a few people play. As suggestions for what you might wanna have a go at Tom, why not try a fun idea behind Tsabo Tavok, expensive black/red legend to go with the deck you already were building but since the trick with Kaevark doesn't work because it has to be combat damage I thought you might try something kinda fun.
Coolest mechanic eh????? I was going to go with Gravestorm but every one I talk to says no no no that is just a bad version of Storm. I liked storm alot, i liked it when they did it, and i liked it when they made a bad version of it. I have tried to build several decks around Bitter Ordeal.
and they are right Gravestorm is a bad version of Storm, sure it is cool but as for my favorite mechanic I have got to go for something new.
Delve. Why do I like this mechanic so much since it is pretty much the same as many other cost reducers, but i like it because it moves cards from one zone to another alot like dredge. So what happens if they make a card like Narcomeba that works with delve. If this creature (or card for that matter) is moved to the RFG from your graveyard you may play the creature without paying its mana cost ( or for non creature cards you might get an effect) if cards like this existed you get cool ideas like "I Tormod's Crypt myself and play 2 *CARDNAME*" I have worked on sets before, and even though I was unable to participate in the GDS i played along at home. So what that opens is very cool to me.
Well since i have rambled on for like 50000000...(just keep entering 0's untill you can properly pronounce the german countryside crusher i only have a few more small things to say.
Gavins combo in show notes was awesome

I absolutely loved Splice. Whether you were adding some damage to a Lava Spike or bringing a friend along with your Footsteps its good times all around. I hope it shows up again in the future. Entwine is a very close second favorite mechanic. Dual mode cards are always fun and being able to do both things is even better. I remember when my friend made a Dimir deck and I was play my Beast deck and I played Reap and Sow, destroying his only land in play at the time. Both of us had gotten manascrewed(I had 2 Gruul karoos in play, having only gotten one normal land so far), and I needed a lead bad. He scooped and we didn't talk for like 3 months.
My fav guy who doesn't die to Smother: Mystic Enforcer! Nomads ftw.
Forgot to say this: Chuck Norris laughs in Smother's face...before heatbutting it. Can't have an MTGS thread w/o a Chuck Norris joke.
For one that's already been printed, I'd have to say Rampage. I can remember cracking a Teeka's Dragon in my early years and totally getting the connection between the art, keyword, and awesome "giant dragon's really gonna kick your (butt) if you get in its way" flavor.
The "Force Spike on a stick" ability of cards like Patron Wizard, Mundungu, and Spiketail Hatchling isn't exactly keyworded, but still pretty awesome. I have a friend who was going to run a Patron Wizard deck at the local PTQ this weekend, but he's chickened out now that he knows how many people will be packing Pithing Needle in the sideboard.
PS: Agreed w/Lizardgod that Gavin's combo this week is amazing tech.

Why thanks for the cards! Sign some of them pretty please? Best book page separators ever (lol.)
I lol'ed at landzschafderdederded being pronounced. Better than my tries I gotta say...
Hrm I don't really have a favourite mechanic per se. I try to evaluate cards on the whole. If it's good I play it, it can have random keyword #304.
However, I do have some preference nowadays: I like dredge.
I hate dredge the deck (play more graveyard hate goddamnit people,) but the mechanic is trading an ample resource for abusing an effect. Can't go wrong if the effect is good.
Which is why so few of them dredge cards are constructed worthy outside of combo, it's dangerous to put dredge on something he.
My favorite mechanic would have to be Ninjutsu from the kamigawa block, back in those days it was such a fun mechanic and it meshed really well with the ninja theme in the block. It was always fun to hear "Ill pay 2B and bring out throat slitter using ninjutsu..." when you were up against a black control/aggro deck. Though not quite as fun as resolving a siege-gang commander when running an extended goblin deck.
As for your EDH deck tom I would recommend making your general something that is at least 3 colors simply to allow youself more leeway to build a fun deck. For instance I used Garza Zol, Plague queen as my general in my EDH deck until I upgraded it to a 250 highlander to make it more random/fun to play. With her as my general I could usally get in 5 quick damage AND cantrip from her attack, and she also let me access BRU which are my 3 best colors, but whatever works for you man.
In regards to your plant deck, I would recommend adding Shield of kaldra, I run it in one of my decks and I have to say it is one of the hardest things to get rid of once it hits the field. It would especially rock on your sprouting phytohydra when pestilence is out;). Another good suggestion would be to think about adding in more changelings(Changling Titan,Nameless inversion) as another win condition or extra control. I mean Wall of blossoms makes a pretty sad beater and you can only have 4 kudzu's/vulturous in the deck. If someone were to extirpate all your pestilence's it would be much harder for you to stay in control of the board.
I like the Double-strike. It always confuse players on how it actually works. Double-strike and trample, fun times.
Faeries did very well at the PTQ I attend in San Antonio, Tx.
There was 124 players for the PTQ. Dredge deck won it against a Faerie deck
2 decks made the top 8. They were a basic standard build.
If you go to Texas Gamers forums (txgamers com) There is a thread with the top 8 decks. http://www.txgamers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6245&page=5
My favorite keyword ability is/are the 5, alternative casting cost cards from Alliances. The "You may "blank" instead of playing card names casting cost. These cards were:
<><><><><><><>
All but one of these cards(Scars of the Veteran) saw constructed play. Other alternative cost cards include: Fireblast, Foil, Commandeer, Gush, Daze, Snuff Out, and Misdirection. To me its just fun to play a spell without having to pay mana for it.
I think one of the best creatures in Extended, that can't be smothered, is Blistering Firecat! He is a house at 7/1 Trample, Hast and can end a close game by himself.
Blistering Firecat is cool, but only if you hardcast him. Otherwise he'll be smothered before he gets flipped, since your opponent would no doubt know what morph you're playing in RDW. As for my favourite extended creature that can't be smothered, I'd go for Autochthon Wurm. It's a huge Wurm, and you can convoke it into play...

In terms of EDH/Commander, I've been experimenting with Lin-Sivvi as a General. Rebels was one of the first decks I played back when I started, so I decided it would be fun to try. Children of Korlis.... rebel.
In terms of keyworded ability, dredge is a pretty cool and has a lot of implications. (Besides just the extended deck.)
And to keep on theme with dredge, a good extended creature which can't be smothered--
My favourite mechanic must be equipment, or even more spesifically equipments that give the equipped creature leaves play -abilities, like Deathrender or the notorious Skullclamp.
I believe that this gives deck developers so many options, that just keep getting better as more sets are added to the available card-pool.
For EDH, I would recommend any of the P3K-rares, as the coolest part of these alternate formats is playing with cards, that most people just never even think will see play. And how cool is it to have all the other people need to read what your general does. Too bad this is not possible eith Magic Online.
