Alex will have a lot in common with this guy. Should make for at least a handful of interesting conversations.
Edit: alright, I think we can start generating characters now, since a few people have a steady concept. I'm moving this to the Character Hall, and I'll be posting character generation guidelines very shortly here.
The basics:
Go here for a more detailed look at the various house rules. Pay particular attention to the alternate rules on damage. This also addresses which supplements are available. As far as d20 Future goes, the only available material are the classes outlined in the Revelation guidelines, and the Base Plus feats. PLEASE give these rules a looking over again, as I have made several important updates to the campaign information on the campaign blog and wiki, including details on a prospective bonus for each player.
We'll be starting at level 6.
Since a traditional by-session measurement of time is hard to gauge in this format, we'll be using the default rules on action points rather than what is written in the house rules. Characters are assumed to have carried over 2 AP from each previous class level they have had, giving them a base of 10 plus their 6th class level.
Ignore the rules stating each player may control 2 characters. This is for the offline version of the game, and would only complicate this version of the game.
I cannot stress enough how important it is to have a backstory. Look to what Alacar and Tanthalas have posted so far- these are perfectly acceptable, and not particularly lengthy, so there should be no excuse for not being able to create one. If you want, you can become more involved, but don't over do it. It's nice to see you getting into your character, but shy away from 28 page epics that recount every detail about your character down to the time and date of every fart he's ever taken.
You can provide me with some character specific NPCs if you wish. Please give me the rough outline of their class, history, and personality.
If a character should die, you'll have to roll up a new one. Sorry.
Each character receives the feat Awakening (see the Revelation system wiki page) as a bonus feat at level 1. For more information regarding specific Revelations, please contact me and I will PM or email you the complete rules text regarding your potential choices. Unfortunately, due to copyright restrictions, I cannot post these openly here or on the party wiki.
You start the game with a weapon of your choice, one magazine of Taps bullets, one magazine of regular bullets, 1 packet of whitesalt powder, and any mundane equipment you want (within reason) that does not require a license to obtain. You can live where you want (so long as you can reasonably commute to Manhattan each day), dress how you like, and sport all the latest in high tech gadgets if you so desire. So treat yourself to a new iPhone, God knows most of us won't be able to afford one ourselves until 2013, so you might as well indulge a little.
Starting date is Summer 2013. Characters can choose to be associated with the Estate from as far back as 2009, to as recent as 3 months. It's your choice.
We won't be using experience, just leveling up as it seems appropriate. If you require XP for crafting or some effect, you can opt to spend a certain sum of AP instead.
New Material:
Outside the Revelation system, which is the default FX system for this game, characters can take several secret talents. These can be taken at any time a character with the right prerequisites could normally take a basic talent (see the base class progressions). Not all the secret talents are outlined in full- although some are. I'll be finishing them (and it doesn't take long) based on what your revelation choices are, so please let me know so I can develop these according to priority.
There are also a few new feats you can consider:
Secret Plus
Prerequisite: Access to any secret talent trees.
Benefit: You can select any entry level secret talent from any talent tree for which you qualify. You may take this feat multiple times. Each time you take it, select a new talent.
Pure Hearted
Prerequisite: Dark Will score of 2 or lower.
Benefit: You gain a +4 bonus to your Will saves against gathering Dark Will.
Baal's Ambition [GOETIC]
Prerequisite: Eldritch Power rank 9 or higher, Dark Will score of 5 or more.
Benefit: You can add your Dark Will score as a bonus to your check modifiers with revelations. However, the penalty you gain to saves against massive damage and energy loss are doubled.
Gaap's Ferocity [GOETIC]
Prerequisite: Baal's Ambition, Eldritch Power rank 12 or higher, Dark Will score of 8 or more
Benefit: You can add your Dark Will score as a bonus to your attack rolls made with melee weapons or unarmed attacks. However, you automatically instill an attitude of hostile in all non-Hellish forces that observe you and realize what you have become, and you take an additional -4 penalty to your saves against massive damage and energy loss.
Greater Awakening
Prerequisite: Access to at least one revelation.
Benefit: You can select another revelation to which you do not have access. You gain access to this revelation and may learn it by spending skill points on it as per normal.
Photonic Toughness
Prerequisite: CON 13
Benefit: You have a special tie to the energy of the sun. You gain a +2 bonus to Fortitude saves against massive damage or energy loss while in direct sunlight.
Penumbral Toughness
Prerequisite: CON 13
Benefit: You have a special tie to the mysteries of darkness. You gain a +2 bonus to Fortitude saves against massive damage or energy loss while in total darkness.
Ego Smash
Prerequisite: STR 13, melee smash talent
Benefit: Whenever you successfully strike a ghost with a melee attack, you lower their effective miss chance provided by being incorporeal by 5%. They are still immune to non-mystical weapon damage.
Greater Ego Smash
Prerequisite: STR 13, melee smash talent, greater ego smash
Benefit: As Ego Smash, but you also cause that ghost to become material for one round afterwards.
Second Chance
Prerequisite: Awakening
Benefit: Whenever you would fail a Fortitude save against dying while at 0 LP, you can reroll it once per day. You must take the second roll, even if it is lower.
Toughness
Prerequisite: Fort +1
Benefit: You gain a +1 bonus to your Fortitude saves against massive damage.
Note: You can take this feat multiple times. It's effects stack.
Vitae
Prerequisite: CON 13
Benefit: You gain 1 additional LP.
Note: You can take this feat multiple times. Its effects stack.
Note: Goetic feats are a special kind of feat that cannot be taken normally. In order to take a Goetic feat, one must first make a pact with a Hellish power to gain itself blessing. This can be done by performing a ritual that requires a succession of skill checks against a DC of 35 and a series of material components that have a purchase DC of 22. You must perform this ritual each time you wish to take such a feat. You can perform the ritual at any time, and the next time you would receive a feat, you can opt to take a Goetic feat instead. (This does not let you replace a fixed bonus feat with a Goetic feat.)
Other New Information:
Dark Will:Dark Will is a sum of negative probability that gathers when the Will of God, a massive network of mystical parameters devised to determine the outcomes of free will, is directly violated. Dark Will is a dangerous substance, causing universal "glitches" that lead to famines, crime, natural disasters, and personal ruin. Whenever a character would do something that would violate universal law, he must make a Will save against 15 + the circumstance modifier of his action + 1 for each point of Dark Will he has accumulated. If he passes, he gains no Dark Will, but if he fails he gains a sum of Dark Will.
Each point of Dark Will grants you a -1 cumulative penalty to your Fortitude saves against massive damage and energy loss, and makes you easier to detect by spiritual creatures.
It is assumed all characters have a starting Dark Will score of 0, unless they have a particularly occult background.

You can sense distant events as if you were physically present. Make a Soul's Eyes check to sense a particular place, creature, or one thing known to you. The base difficult is 10, modified by familiarity. If successful, you observe the subject as if you were present. The vision lasts as long as you maintain it, but your ordinary senses are overridden, so you are unawae of what is happening near you while you are observing events elsewhere. A subject observed with Soul's Eyes is considered present in terms of familiarity, but not in your actual line of sight. Soul's Eyes creates a spiritual disturbance, which creatures with Intelligence of 10 or more can sense. Any such creature under observation can make a Sense Motive or Spiritual Senses check, opposed to your Soul's Eyes check. Creatures with no supernatural abilities get the intense feeling of being watched. Revelators see a glowing or shadowy image of you on a successful perception check. You also have a present familiarity with any creature that senses you for the purpose of that creature's powers, meaning they may affect you in return. Soul's Eyes is a full round action that consumes a charge or causes energy loss.

Backstory: Adam Fontaine never really got a break in his life. In high school, he was on the football team, but never the quarterback. In college, he was fourth in his class. Even when he signed up for the police academy, he was always a second banana. Working in the force for five years, he was constantly trying to prove himself. But a growing drinking habit wore on his chances, and when he tried to finally earn a spot on Homicide, he was denied.
Quitting the force to work as a private investigator, a thirtysomething Adam tried to make a name for himself, modeling his life after the noir gumshoes he idolized in old pulp novels. Trying to remain optimistic, he hoped for his big break; uncovering a drug ring, rescuing a kidnapped victim, even solving a murder in a bloody gunfight.
He never got his chance.
Ten years later, Adam was disillusioned and tired. Years of working for worried wives and bookies looking for their debtors, stolen merchandise and low-profile thugs took its toll. Adam never really had many friends, and those old buddies from the police force he knew were dwindling. They were either moving up and away in the world, or dead.
In 2009, Adam finally had enough. Driving to an abandoned steel mill in Manhattan, he decided to hang himself. There he would be, alone and forgotten, not even making a mark in the news until much later, when he was a footnote in the obituaries. Just like him, he figured. Going to the mill, rope in hand, he discovered a group of dark-robed individuals. They were practicing some sort of ritual, speaking in tongues. Adam’s police instincts and curiosity overtook him, and he stuck his nose in too deep. Discovered, he was stunned before he could fire his gun. He could only watch in horror as the faceless cultists beat the tar out of him with metal pipes for interrupting.
Adam was fortunate, though. A police unit had been called over after hearing a disturbance. Discovering his car and entry, they investigated. Not finding the cultists, they instead discovered him. He was near death, and rushed to the ER. It was there that he faded into death for 10 minutes, before being saved. At this time, he had a vision—a grandiose elevator and a pitch-dark room. There he discovered his personal truth, which helped him come back.
Recovering in the hospital, a guest came to the door. It was Miranda Vasquez, an old rival from his police days. She and Adam had a long talk, and she eventually convinced him to work with her and others for Unit 17 in the Estate. Having nothing to lose, he agreed.
Adam’s personality is grim, but not closed off. He only appears unapproachable, but once you’ve earned his trust, he is nothing but a friend. He prefers to keep to himself, though sometimes enjoying time with his fellow members of Unit 17. He’s tried to rekindle that hope to recapture the feeling of the old pulp noir detective. Maybe he will get that break after all.
Edit: Whoa! Someone else already has the Fast Hero! I must've missed that. I'll plan another character in case this one doesn't computeconform whatever. You know what I mean.
Or I'll just pick the other advanced class.
I'm prone to making minor adjustments a lot, so please don't yell at me or anything...

Backstory: Marc Lee was born to a pair of Korean doctors who moved to the USA. Always curious, and always bored with his relatively average life, he at first got himself involved gangs, then eventually the mob. He never got far in the mob, but took satisfaction in the fact that he was leading a life which he saw as special.
One night, as acting as a look-out/emergency sniper for a major break-in, the police arrived, arresting the whole team, except for Marc. He was hiding, and when the police came, he ran, rather than providing backup fire, as he was told to do. However, the leaders of the mob did not take his cowardice lightly, and even went so far as to accuse him of tipping off the police. They beat and tortured Marc into a coma, and left him at the nearest hospital. There he remained for two years, with seemingly no chance of recovery.
Finally, he died...and awoke, screaming, 8 minutes later.
The doctors were baffled by his occurence, but passed it off as a scientific miracle. Some news must have gotten out, however, and as Marc lay recovering in bed he was approached by a non-descript man, who introduced Marc to Cogito, The Estate, and Unit 17. As Marc had no-where to go, no-one to turn to, for he could not attract the attention of the mob again, he accepted the invitation, and dedicated himself fully. He trained and gradually regained his full physical potential, but that fateful moment still haunts him.
Marc is outwardly flamboyant and confidant, but inside he is terrified with the concept of death. He has never spoken about what he saw that awoke him from his coma.

Scientific Improvisation: Spend an action point and make a Craft check to do verrry interesting things. I call this "Being MacGyver". Talent: Savant (Computer Use) Revelations: Telekinesis (Int); Protection (Wis)
Possessions: The best iPhone on the market, probably modified beyond what its manufacturer ever intended. Has downloads of the latest in rock music, though whether or not those are legally obtained is unknown. Field Contractor's Bag; holding a notebook computer complete with anything OTHER than Bill Gates' newest OS (Linux 2013, anyone?) Hoping for the upgraded processor and a cellular modem; also could use some kind of recharger with a spare pack available when needed. Electrical repair kit; well-stocked. Multipurpose tool- when you need something random, the Swiss Army Knife is the way to go.
Possessions not on person, but she drives it: Antique 1968 Volkswagen Van, in decent condition, custom-painted with scenes from Final Fanstasy XX, vanity plate New York State 'GTFO'. Also, a load of computer parts, supplies and stuff crammed into an apartment barely big enough for a Moogle.
Backstory: Flash never was one to follow what others wanted her to do; not even as a child. Her racial background being unusual, to say the least, set her apart, as did her quick mind and even quicker tongue.
Born to an American mother and an immigrant who made a small fortune in the dotcom rush back in the 90s, Eugenia's early years were idyllic. Then the recession hit; most newer companies shut down, and her father found himself in more problems than he could get out of. He asked for a loan from the wrong people. When he couldn't pay, Eugenia was quietly taken from her private school and held. One of the men, known only to her as Joshua, had a liking for that which normal men should not think of. After he used the girl, she broke free, running for the plate-glass window...
Eugenia was in a coma for six months. The paramedics say she was literally dead when they got there, all signs of her kidnappers gone. They only discovered who she was when her mother, tearful and praying, appeared on TV for the return of her only child. Putting two and two together, they found her in the hospital.
Euegnia wasn't the same girl afterward. They tried therapists, and it seemed she'd rather work with nonliving machines than with living men. Especially men. The father she once adored was now shunned. Eugenia herself prefers the company of no one but the artificial intelligences she works on in her spare time.
Her intelligence was in no way affected by the accident; it's as if someone completely different returned when she fell four stories to the ground.
And yes, no incantatrix for you. Or anyone. That class makes puppies cry. Mostly because they are the former Big Bads who have been Baleful Polymorphed into said puppies. By you. Because you're an incantatrix.

Backstory:
James was raised in the Sacred Petal orphanage. Luckily, this orphanage was run and sponsored by John Silverman, an elderly philanthropist, so he had a stern but well-adjusted upbringing. Just after he turned 10, he was adopted by the Kingston family. Martha and Bruce Kingston were generous, loving parents, and James soon bonded with their 8-year-old son Brett.
For his first few years at school, James' mediocre marks and average physical performance had him skate by practically un-noticed. But once he got to high school, James began to notice that he had a way with words that was far more effective in resolving conflicts than his fists ever could be. He was made Head Boy at his high school, and garnered respect from both teachers and students alike.
When he was 18, James sat the test to become part of the police force. He progressed quickly through the ranks of the NYPD, and was soon recognised for his level-headed and trustworthy nature, and as a member of SWAT, has helped resolve many situations peacefully that otherwise could have lead to violence.
James has always treated people with respect, no matter what walk of life they come from. He dislikes bigots, racists, and anyone who judges people by their background or the way they look. A personal hobby of his is learning the languages of the people he meets, to better understand them.
He has developed a close working relationship and friendship with a private investigator named Keith Larkin, and they have helped each other out with cases on quite a few occasions.
18 months ago, however, Keith took on a case that would change his and James' lives forever. It started with the investigation of a missing heiress of a local land-owner. Upon further investigation, James and Keith discovered that the unrequited love of the family's late gardener for the heiress had trapped his spirit inside a sycamore tree, and was drawing evil spirits into it. With the aid of a former priest known only as Grey Pete, they attempted to perform an exorcism on the tree. But the gardener would not be defeated easily, and summoned twisted apparitions of those whose lives he had taken, in a last-ditch effort to live. Keith and James soon discovered that firearms were ineffective against these apparitions, and one of them was able to make contact with James for a brief second before Grey Pete finished his exorcism.
The touch of the apparition left no physical wound, but mentally the shock was more than he could handle. He went into a coma, which lasted over three months. Finally, his parents decided that since he had shown no brain activity ever since the incident, that it was time to pull the plug.
They had the OK from various medical specialists, and then they pulled the plug. But instead of the gentle repose from life that they were told would happen when James was disconnected from the machines, James spasmed, coughed, and awoke from his near-death state. For his family, who had prepared themselves mentally for his death, this was almost too much. They broke down and cried. The doctors called it a miracle.
They kept him in the hospital overnight. The next day, after they had convinced his family to take him home, he received a mysterious call on his cellphone from a person who knew exactly what had happened to him. A member of The Estate.
"It was not a miracle. You are still needed in this world."
Since then, he has quit the force, and begun to use the unique talents he has discovered within himself to assist Section 17 of The Estate with paranormal investigations.

personally, I love it. You have to remember, as far as tone goes, this is a Rise game for me- everything is supposed to be gritty and mature (the first Rise game had a child serial killer as a primary player).
You're the admin, so long as you don't think it's over the line, it's fine. Obviously, with the darker subject matter, we all have to be careful not to get too severe here, but its fine for the characters and events to have some grit as long as we aren't too vivid, I think.

Well, it concerns sensitive subject matter, but it makes for an interesting story. I just don't wish to make others uncomfortable with it.
I figured that for this sort of game, and with those who have joined, it would be okay to delve into material that's not all sweetness and light; bad stuff happens, even stuff like I outlined, and the concept I have behind my character will fit that.
Edit: So it's okay for me to have a nice laptop with cell modem? I think that would be rather nice Also, I'll provide info on the allegiance I listed called TheTruth.net. The general idea behind it is a hacker alliance devoted to uncovering knowledge the government would rather not become public knowledge...and all the ranks I plan to put into computer skills will reflect that.

That's just fine. You guys can have anything that doesn't require a license- so you can stock up on trendy phones, high end computers, stylish clothes, or whatever, but you can't have a fleet of jumbo jets or military grade weaponry.
I think the back story is fine- it paints a picture that is somewhat grim, but it does create a realistic character, too. I can't speak for anyone, obviously, but I doubt they'll be too uncomfortable, as most of them have fairly checkered pasts themselves.
Also, for some stupid reason, I seem to have neglected to put hair color on the character sheet.
I plan on keeping this PG-13 as possible, given the site rules and all, but there will be some suggested material that is grim. Really, though, none of it will be any worse than any of the serious discussions in Debate.
We just want to avoid any unnecessary graphicness, swearing, or vulgarity, really. So, like I said, Eugenia's backstory is fine, so long as we aren't having any vivid flashbacks later on. I won't pull any punches, either, as far as the game goes (I mean, because honestly, regular D&D can be pretty violent and messy, too, and that seems fine. Nothing is really any worse than a particularly nasty black card in MTG, though, and the same will apply here. It's just that the real world relevance will make it a bit more unsettling), but you won't be seeing anything like, say, Why Do Birds Suddenly Appear again, either.

yeah, to be honest that was a little bizarre for me, only because it's also my name. I was like "okay, she's either got a horrible perception of me, or she's played the World Ends with You, or I'm reading waaaay too much into this."
There was also an NPC Joshua in the first Rise who was... let's just say he was not the most scrupulous fellow.
It's fine for her to have that quirk, but just remember- 4 of the 5 party members are male, and 2 of the 4 major Estate NPCs are male, too. She doesn't have to trust them, but please please please be able to work with them, at the bare minimum.

I think the worst you can expect is a slightly flipped-out reaction to touching of any sort- "Don' touch me, man, and I MEAN it" sort of thing, even if it's innocent, unintended, or whatever.

It also explains quite nicely why she's a techfreak; after all, you can't touch anyone online, and if they "hurt" you that way, you can "hurt" right back.

Spacefolding is easy, it's a new one that has no OGL equivalent-
You can, as a move action, teleport a very short distance. You must make a Spacefolding check against a base DC of 15, which allows you to teleport 10 feet as a move action. By increasing the DC by 1, you can move an additional 5 feet, up to a maximum of 60 feet total. You can also transport one additional person by increasing the DC by 1 for each person transported and by 1 again for each 5 feet beyond the initial 10 feet (this is an increase that is cumulative with additional increases to this DC for moving beyond the standard 10 feet). This means if you transport 2 people (plus yourself) across 30 feet, you must succeed on a Spacefolding check of 25 (Base DC of 15 + 2 for the additional people + 4 for moving an additional 20 feet + 4 again for moving additional people 20 extra feet). In order to transport additional individuals, they must be in your square or adjacent to your square at the time you decide to use your Spacefolding.
You can only teleport into a location you can clearly see.

Alex will have a lot in common with this guy. Should make for at least a handful of interesting conversations.
Edit: alright, I think we can start generating characters now, since a few people have a steady concept. I'm moving this to the Character Hall, and I'll be posting character generation guidelines very shortly here.
The basics:
Dark Will: Dark Will is a sum of negative probability that gathers when the Will of God, a massive network of mystical parameters devised to determine the outcomes of free will, is directly violated.

The best iPhone on the market, probably modified beyond what its manufacturer ever intended.

Backstory:

You're the admin, so long as you don't think it's over the line, it's fine. Obviously, with the darker subject matter, we all have to be careful not to get too severe here, but its fine for the characters and events to have some grit as long as we aren't too vivid, I think.

Flashbacks aren't likely but if you're a living male rather than a computer sort she'll probably have a hard time trusting everything you say.

I can balance it out.

Jes' sayin'.
I'll PM you Umbrakinesis.
Edit: Ummm...I can't find anything on how many feats I get. Do I get the one at first level, then third, then sixth, etc.?
Edit II of DOOM!: Do we get the occupation-thing?
