This thread is for the discussion of my latest article, MTGCast #103 - Everything but the Kitchen Finks!. We would be grateful if you would let us know what you think, but please keep your comments on topic.
Hi everyone, I won the comment contest for #100 and I just wanted to thank Tom and say that the cards came very quickly. They came close to within a week of the episode (I wanted to wait until a week when I could get a post near the top of the thread to write this).
My launch party experience: I played W/U with lots of defensive tricks like Mistmeadow Witch (x2) plus Kitchen Finks and Trip Noose plus Leech Bonder plus lots of persist creatures.... The deck was really good at not losing but not so great at winning. I started off 0-0-3 before finally winning the last round against a not so skilled player. There was not much of a prize pool but the entry fee was really low so I was mostly just having fun not losing rather than rushing people to finish our matches so I could "work on my rating".
Some episodes back you guys were talking about how the storyline flavor text has been replaced by the one-liners and I think they've taken that to another level in Shadowmoor. I really think it's my least favorite set in terms of flavor text. It just all seems like filler -- it matches the art but does not add to my understanding of the world of Shadowmoor. I like some of that but not on every card. If I have to pick one though, I'll go with your guys preview of Windbrisk Raptor: (as read by Gavin) "It awakened to gloom-fouled skies and responded with a righteous rage that shook the heavens."
Just started downloading the cast, I'll post as soon as I finished listening to the cast.
What I was wondering, maybe you could have a world-map where you could mark all the places Tom has sent comment-contest cards to.
Just an idea.

That is truly an awesome idea! I will start to look back and see if I can remember the different countries. Off the top of my head, we have:
South Africa, Peru, Turkey, Canada, Norway and atleast 5-6 more. I will try and set up one of those flickr maps or some sort google maps mashup.

Actually Cohort is much better than hoodlums since its actually playable in limited... hoodlums is an entirely different magnitude of bad compared to this guy.
Boggart Ram-Gang has got some nice flavor text, but i don't own and shadowmoor card yet. we had a best "release tourney" kinda, one of my sunday night magic guys got a booster box and have 2 people play for fun, and 3 other people buy in and himself and we did a 5 pack booster draft. I made a b/u deck with some mono blue cards that ran nothing but islands. it was quite fun, and honestly one of my favorate experances. also this week i relise no one on here will nessiarly care, but our local card shop closed without any warning and the owners are moving. worse shadowmoor card ever - Mass Calcify because it just sucks....
I dunno, Constructed players, can't get a word of sense out of 'em!
Worst card in Shadowmoor: Plague of Vermin. Allow me to explain why it's so profoundly bad...
1) The cost alone makes it unplayable in any Constructed format before you even start to worry about what it does.
2) It's symmetric. That is to say before you can get any use out of it whatsoever you'll have to find a way to break the symmetry. This is so hard to do that the card's rendered useless in Limited too.
OK, fair enough. So it's a Casual card. Surely this card still has a role in a Casual deck somewhere?
3) It's not actually even properly symmetric. Because the caster has to make the decision first (a disadvantage) but his or her rats will get to attack last (another disadvantage). The problem here being that someone will either find a way to kill you with the rats you gave them or will Wrath the rats you made, leaving the net effect of your spell as all that life you paid.
4) OK, so what about I build an ingenious deck which actually exploits the fact the opponents get rats too? Hmm... Stronghold Discipline maybe? Oh no. Even that sucks, because the opponents are not forced to gain rat tokens.
5) OK, so I can maybe get around problem three with some way to grant Haste (Anger maybe?) and some way to give my rats evasion. Erm... Levitation? And if I pull all this off I'm left with a deck that needs to resolve a seven mana sorcery to be a massively inferior version of a dull Green deck (Saproling Overrun). Great.
No, wait, there's one last ray of hope! It's got to be good in a Rat theme deck, right? Where are all my Kawigawa block Rare Rat Legends?
6) The card sucks even in the Rat deck because the only card in that deck which really cares about other Rats is Marrow Gnawer. It's true that the card combos beautifully with Marrow Gnawer... if you happen to have several spare turns after you reach seven mana.
So in summary, this is a card which belongs in exactly one really bad Casual combo deck which probably isn't even fun to play because it scoops to everything. And nowhere else. And it's in the Rare slot.
Plague of Vermin, I award you the Medal of Fail!

Hello to Tom, Gavin, Derek and anyone else who might be reading this,
I just wanted to give my two cents into what the best flavor text in Shadowmoor is and to why I should be considered for the contest this week. First off, the flavor text. As Gavin said in the show, I have been looking at the cards so long already that I had to force myself to slow down and read the flavor text of the commons. However, my efforts did not go unrewarded. I ended up finding a hidden gem of a card in intimidator initiate. The card is not that great but the flavor text is amazing. “Don't stand in his way, for his way is full of pointy things and fire”. If you don’t believe me look at the card. It actually has the word “pointy” printed on it. Now, on to why I NEED to win the contest this week. As you can probably tell by my name I love the card squire. Ever since they reprinted it in timespiral my friends and I have been cracking jokes about its badness. This was also the set that I really started drafting seriously at my local card shop. At the end of the draft, at my shop, we pass in all the rares and time-shifted cards to be picked so that people don’t rare draft. Every time I saw a squire I would take it. Maybe not first pick, maybe not second, but I would take it. The problem is, I still have not seen a foil one. I have an entire page in my binder devoted to the awesomeness that is squire but I don’t have a foil one to display in the center. Thanks for considering me and my submission for the comment contest
Well, it's rather hard to go past Plague of Vermin, a 7 mana sorcery that does essentially nothing - though I have dreams of playing it for a lot followed by Children of Korlis, then the next turn dropping Relentless Rats and Mirrorweaveing all my Rats into gigantic angry monsters! 4 card, 2 colour, 15 mana combos that don't win the game are my speciality
As for flavour text, I haven't been paying that much attention to it as the cards' rules text is complicated enough - one punny bit of italics did stick in my mind though, on Jaws of Stone - 'When giants find their mountain homes infested, they have a whole range of solutions.'
I'm not sure precisely where our trio of hosts live in the USA, though I gather from this episode Tom is in Minnesota. Are any of you going to head to PT: Hollywood for a gander at the pros? That goes for the listeners too, anyone heading to Hollywood?

Worst...I'd have to say the Ashenmoor Cohort is pretty bad, although I weep every time I see a Plague of Vermin go around in a draft, a waste of a rare, time and money. At least One with Nothing made you ponder the possibilities.
But one of the neatest pieces of flavour in recent memory for me has been Rosheen Meanderer and the picture fits. A sort of playable card to boot too (at the very least, a generic 4/4 beater for 4, no complaints here?). She really puts forward how dark Shadowmoor is in relation to Lorwyn. (or as I put it in most arguments "at least *I* liked it")
My stupid PC won't download the whole cast, gets stuck at 11 minutes.
I had a great pre-release, even though I didn't win, or even place well.
The first time, I was placed just out of prizes, but the judge decided to give extra boosters, which netted me one.
The second time, at release, I lost dismally, but a buddy of mine traded for the shirt from the winner, which he then gave to me.
There was no cards I really disliked, except maybe Greater Auramancy. I guess someone will try and break it, but not in Limited.
So not bad at all, but there is one card I needed to get, just for the art:
I personally think this card has the absolute best art in the whole set, I would have loved it even more
if this was the art for some wicked black sorcery, but you can't have it all, i guess.
Anyway, loved the part of the 'cast i was able to listen to.
I'll most definitely tune in next week.
Cheers

There's no penalty for failing to sacrifice a Homonculus.
I only get really pissed of with rares, so I choose Tyrannize (and I got one in my fatpack).
Because it's over costed, works only against specific decks (by turn 5 how many cards will your opponents have? 0, 2-3, 7?), sorcery speed is bad, and its your opponents' decision!
Needs to be comboed with something to ensure it works, and doesn't become a dead card in your hand.
As for flavor, I love Rosheen's. But my favorite is Deep-slumbering titan's: simple, to the point, and fits well with the name.
OK! So my favorite flavor text from shadowmoor has to be Grim Poppet. Beware of a scarecrow bearing gifts, especially sloshing vessels of acid. I just love the flavor of the card, overall. And, as a chemical engineer, sloshing vessels of acid isn't exactly an uncommon thing for me. As a matter of fact, if Grim Poppet is in need of a job, I got a whole bunch of sloshing vessels of acid that need giving to people.
Artifacts (3): 3x Prismatic Lens (Consider Coalition Relic or Foriyisian Totem - gives R and can become a creature to keep my pyrohemia alive)
Here is my first rough decklist for my deck that I will be trying out at FNM this week for Standard. A whole slew of mass red removal combined with Deep-Slumber Titan. Big question is will it have enough threats at the end of the day, but it sure can kill creatures. And Mercy Killing is just icing on the cake to take out those pesky pro-red creatures!
its round4 and my team is 3-0 my partner is playing UGw, im playing Br
We have a drowner intaite(my partner using) and been milling until our opponent has 7 cards or so, we are losing the race to their big beats.
On our turn, we're on 8 facing a 4/4 unblockable and nothing else we cant block.
Our turn, we draw, and play 2 blue spells milling our opponent to 3 cards, then 2 on his draw.
In my hand is disturbing plot with no blue creatures in any of our graveyards.
They attack us to 4.
We draw.. no blue spell. We thought we lost.. our answer? Attack with all
They blocked a few and casted gloomwidow's feast on our BLUE CREATURE. we cracked up laughing, and our opponents are like, do you have a blue spell? We're like, no, but you just gave us one!
one copy of drowner can go a loooong way
flavor text from shadowmoor i like
im going to just say the text, see if you know which card these are on If you think you made it past him alive, he's just teasing you "The bigger they are, the more fun it is to watch them fall flat on their face."
Hello and thanks for the tips. I really like your idea of adding more threats, especially creatures, to be pressure on my opponent and ones that can survive the heat. So I dug through my Shadowmoor and found a few gems I really like for this deck, Ashenmoor Gouger, Deus of Calamity, and one I somehow missed in my combo is Mossbridge Troll!
One problem I see right away is that the deck will have a hard time racing without the Titan. I would max out on Dolls, maybe add some accel so you can really wrath turn four with Pyrohemia or play Pyroclasm/activate Martyr alongside Slumber Titan or at least get Doll turn four. Mind Stone is criminally underplayed.
I still predict a hard game vs control, since you play very few creatures that can inflict serious damage (I do like the pro-red Goblin, but I'd probably play a creature with a big behind instead) and most of your damage is symmetrical once removal or sweepers enter the picture. Likewise, I don't see you getting much action early enough to outrace decks with a lot of burn barring a t4 Titan.
Do you really need the green? I'd play Skred (especiall with four Dolls) unless I was really afraid of pro-red, but then black would prolly be better, depending on the board. Maybe Kitchen Finks could be supported. Or Tarmogoyf or land fetch.
Looks like a blast to play, anyway.
As for myself, I'm working on a deck that has other but even more disconcerting problems. It wins (maybe) via Wheel of Sun and Moon, recurring Extirpate. It has a cantrip engine consisting of ridiculously bad cards (Niveous Wisps being the best of the bunch) and uses the pitch wrath to make sure it does draw the recurred Extirpate(s) and Martyrs ...

There's no penalty for failing to sacrifice a Homonculus.
A lot of the choices, unfortunately, are solely based on the cards I have. I agree with the Mossbridge Troll likely not being as good as another Stuffy Doll, but I only have two and the new preponderance of -1/-1 counters makes me a bit nervous to have a 5cc 0/1. I did get a suggestion to look at Vigor as an option to combo well with Pyrohemia. I only have 1 Demigod, so not as optimal. I am also waiting to see if Mind Stone will make a good replacement for the Lens. I will likely never have any Tarmogoyfs, I gots to eat!
We will see how things go tonight and continue the process!
I'm not at home in Standard, so I have no clue as to how to judge your creature base. It seems to me that Mossbridge Troll is both expensive and not that good (Thresher's better). I would still just play the 3-4th Stuffy. Or, hell, Demigod. (I don't like the Deus at all ) Maybe Tarmogoyf. *shrugs* Or Murderous Redcap for stalling.
I'm also not sold on Prismatic Lense. It seems like the tools are there to make a stable mana base so Mind Stone would work just as well. I don't know if four pieces of acceleration is enough in any case. But Mind Stone cycles once it's unneeded so you could play 6-7 (accel pieces, not Stones ) easily if you find the room.
Right now, you have green for Mercy Killing (black would work), Mossbridge Troll (Demigod/Stuffy would work), and Firespout (arguably the best use). That's not ver much, though Firespout's green side seems kind crucial against Faeries though. What do you think of a second splash?
If it was my deck, I'd go -4 Lense, -1 Deus, -2 Troll, -2 Stuffy, -1 Titan's Revenge, +4 Demigod, +4 Mind Stone, +2 other accel for testing. (And add a black splash for sideboard cards, probably.) At least, that's what I'd do if I was made of money.
As for the sideboard, I was never very good at judging metagames not my own. It looks like you could be making better use of your secondary color, maybe.
Krosan Grip seems good, as a Story Circle with even a few mana can negate the worst of your attack (I'm assuming anyone with Story Circle also has enough creature kill). I'd let Bitterblossom live most of the time, though

"The bigger they are, the more fun it is to watch them fall flat on their face."
That's a good one, but I have to say my favorite is the Islesback Spawn, partly due to the fact I opened one in sealed.
"The more deadly the lake monster, the shorter the tale."
And with strange aeons even death may die.

I feel stupid for even asking what happened, but... HUH?
Cheers,
Tom
