This was a great show, I like it when all three of you are on.
As for my favorite pack, I'll have to go with a Ravnica tournament pack. I took a long break from Magic (left after Nemesis) and found my old cards while getting ready for a move in 2006. Looking through the cards made me realize how much I missed the game so I went to wizards.com to see what was happening in the world of Magic. I had fun looking up old favorite cards on Gatherer to see which base editions they had been in while I was away, and in some cases the new art knocked my socks off.
One of the first things I did when I arrived in my new city was find a local game shop. I loved the idea of the Ravnica guilds, and I wanted the basic land, so I bought a tournament pack. I just about fell over when I saw my old favorite Birds of Paradise with the new gorgeous art, in black border and foil no less. It's not the most valuable card I've ever pulled, but it was a lovely "welcome back" surprise.
ETA: Pro player cards are great tokens and I can't imagine throwing them away, they're too silly and I think they'll be even funnier in 20 years.

My cat Destroyer (the name was funnier back when he was a tiny, few-week-old kitten, now people unfamiliar with his pacifist nature look at my huge cat and wonder if his name means he's dangerous) is really enthusiastic when it comes to 'covering up' in his litter box. I suspect he's part mole. I have to clean up the debris field periodically, and a while back I had the great idea to pad the surrounding carpet with pro player cards. I told my idea to the people at the store I go to and they thought it was a fitting use, and so I managed to get a bunch of pro player card donations. It worked well for a few days, but they started to stink and are more of an eye-sore than gray kittylitter on gray carpet, so I threw them out. But it was satisfying while it lasted (I like to think that Dee thought so too).
I wasn't witness to it, but the best booster story I've ever heard was in Onslaught. A friend wanted a Akroma, and came over to another friend's house claiming he had already gotten it. When asked to show it, he showed a unopened booster pack.
Everyone thought he was joking, and he proceeded to open it, and reveal the rare card in a very dramatic way, and it turned out to be a FOIL Akroma.
My best boosters were from TS, I bought 1/3 of a booster box, so among my 6 boosters where: TS Akroma, Avatar of Woe, and Bellkite. I was so happy (btw, the girl I was dating was the one who opened them, and didn't know the cards or why I was so happy).
The PTP cards? They're in my restroom as emergency toilet-paper.
I get my PTP cards from my fat packs, I used to have a lot of them, then my friend asked if he could have them. It turns out he collects player cards so that he can cut their heads out and do....."stuff" to them. I was going to ask what stuff entailed(Then I thought of possible answers:eek:), then thought better of it and gave it to him without asking. Morale of the story: PTP cards can amuse people in different ways I suppose.
EDIT: @ Blunt World - Woah, ease up, each of the three musketeer's have their own style of speech, and as long as they get the point across, who cares. I for one am simply glad all three of them were there at the time to offer their advice and opinions. Theres no need to be critical over somthing like that.
Wow this should be the Gavin show, he doesn't give anyone a chance. He cuts Derek mid-sentence, answers questions first, goes on tangents, and just won't shut up.
Have you ever heard put a sock in it?
MTGcast is supposed to be a dialog not a monologue, shesh!!
I guess it's Monday Night Gavincast.
Gavin likes thunder and steals it alot, we get this as a longtime listener i've come to terms that gavin will always try to get a word in edge wise and will always talk. Hes Gavin, cant blame him fo rbeing himself.... However we can make fun of his math skills! thats fair game!
I don't intentionally cut Derek off mid sentence. The problem with podcasting over the internet is that there is a minor sound delay and there are no gestures to indicate whose turn it is to talk. Same goes for answering questions first. If a second or two goes by without a response (which often occurs) I comment to keep things going.
But yes, I will freely admit that I did get a little carried away this episode. I was in a talkative mood! I apologize if it ruined the show for you.
no worries gavin u did'nt ruin anything. if you ruined the show shoot u'd of been fired months ago lol your a fantastic asset and talkative is better then silent! especially ona podcast.
As Drizzs stated Gavin there is no need for you to apologize, you simply want to state your thoughts and opinions, which is what a podcast is all about. Don't be too bothered by one person's comments, like they say "you can't please them all".
Fresh back from Planar Chaos pre-release, my brother, my friend, and I, decided to 3-way draft the 9 packs we just won. As I opened my first pack it was hard to constrain my facial expression as I picked Damnation. I must of did a bad job because they both knew I had something good.
When my friend opened his second pack, he jumps up shouting "I got a Damnation too". Obviously this was exciting for us all, I mean what are the odds.
When my brother opened his third pack, he had this glowing smile. I asked him "what could you have thats got you all excited, another Damnation?" He replied "No...". I was perplexed, what could possibly more exciting than opening two Damnations?
He paused before saying "...I got a foil Damnation!" At instant speed the room erupted into an uproar, and the card went into a protective case.
Lucky for me I actually was the only one playing black, so they didn't play theirs.
So if I had to pick it would be the third pack, although it needed the assist from the first two.

I don't think you are trying to be an a-hole, and I like your commentary. Tom holds it together, but you have an alpha personality on the podcast, especially with the departure of Dom. You did cut Derek off at a point, in mid-sentence and took over his point. I wanted to hear Derek finnish his point but he never did, for whatever reason. It really sounded like Derek was peeved for a second (seriously go back to the beginning before Tom said "Gavincast", after that you calmed down).
I don't mean any harm, I'm just busting your balls. You didn't ruin the podcast, but I wanted to bring this to your attention.
Since you didn't say "booster" I'm going to be dodgy and use a tournament pack. I cracked 3 planewalkers: Garruk, Chandra and Jace in one pack. Honest. Beat that.
Great show you guys. I especially like the parts when you guys talked about draft but I would like to see more Showdowmoor focused discussion.
Although opening money is nice, my favorite pack is probably the one I opened last night while drafting with my friends. It was an English pack with a random Spanish Somnomancer in it. I was tempted to take it but the flame javelin was just so much better in my deck.
And on the other question I generally use my pro-player cards as ninja throwing stars.
personally, i would love to hear you guys talk about Block constructed more.
I have been playing fae decks since lorwyn was released, and they are definitley over powered. but i love them all the same.
My best pack? thats a hard one, ive been playing for the better part of 13 years now, and they all merge together, but, my first pack of planar chaos was crap. i didnt want to buy anymore of it(i was that mad), my friend bought me one pack the next day to test my luck(more like his...hehe) and i pulled a damnation AND extirpate in one pack. after that i bought a box, and pulled more and more cash!
i was late listening to the show this week, work is hell, but im going to make sure i listen to it more!!!
EDIT: the pro player cards, in my casual group are called "PROKENS" and they are awesome!!!!!!
Great podcast guys. I have found the podcast in the last two months, and have went back and listened to back into the late 70's.
For the comment contest. My most interesting pack would have had to have been three guild pact boosters. I had gotten back in to the game when ravnica was released, and had set aside a binder to start tucking away a full set of the block. I had purchased two booster boxes of guild pact and was just unable to crack open a godless shrine, burning tree shaman, or rumbling slum. I had gotten married that year in may, and on the way to dinner with our friends after the judge had take care of the legality of it. We had stopped by and gotten a single guild pact booster at wal-mart while the wife went into to get something. Had her open it for good luck, and bingo foil shaman. Lol, to cap the day off, our friend gave me 3 guild pact boosters for a gag wedding gift. Opened 2 myself, and had the wife take care of the third. Yes she did crack the godless shrine. It turned out to just be one of those memorable days, and one of those odd stories that you don't tell around the thanksgiving table but is still a story that begs to be told.
Keep up the excellent work guys. I look forward to every episode.
For the Pro Cards thing my friends actually collect them and now we're making a Monopoly Board Game. We havent exactly decided how we're gonna do it soo if you have any ideas on what we could do PM me!
Regarding cutting each other off, maybe you guys could have a chat going in skype where you just type a letter to indicate who has the talking stick...or maybe Tom could just direct traffic (like he does some of time).
Since you didn't say "booster" I'm going to be dodgy and use a tournament pack. I cracked 3 planewalkers: Garruk, Chandra and Jace in one pack. Honest. Beat that.
I just read this comment, but when I did I couldn't help smirking.
The 29th of April was my buddies birthday, so I was invited over for a beer... I thought it would be cool if we play some sealed, instead of me just giving him some packs. So on the way I stopped at a shop to buy some tournament packs and boosters. At his house, I spread all the packs on the table and told him he could have first pick. So he took his choice of the Lorwyn packs, and I took the remaining cards. I opened my three boosters, opening a Secluded Glen, a Spinerock Knoll and a Shelldock Isle. That was one crap land and two pretty cool ones, but I was worried because there was no bomb-ey cards
in any of the boosters. I then proceeded to open the tournament pack and my jaw dropped as two of the rares where planeswalkers, Jace and Garruk. I flipped to the back of the pack to see if I also got some foily goodness. I nearly fainted; a foiled Liliana Vess! ! ! The pro player card was none other than Rapheal Levy, my favourite pro player, no doubt making sure I got some kick-ass for the deck. Needless to say I wiped the floor with my buddy, who apparently got nothing of worth in any of his packs. At the end of the night, before I left, I put al the cards I opened, sans the Levy PP-card I shoved in my wallet, in the tournament pack and left it on his kitchen counter. About ten minutes after I got home he phoned me: "Dude, you forgot your cards here."
"Nah, i didn't forget them. Happy birthday man."
See, after I bought the cards, I decided that he could keep all the cards, regardless of what I opened. Bad timing for busting my best tournament pack to date, I guess...
I clearly cannot compete with any of these memorable packs. Foil Tarm + Tarm = craziness. My first two packs (ever) were fairly memorable - they were out of my Starter pack, way back with original starter. The rare in each pack? Armageddon. Gave me an early appreciation for land destruction, which I like until this day.
And pro player cards? Wow, I hate them. Do I *really* want to stare at some smug gamer's face? Yes, they made money playing a game. Does that matter to me at all? Nope. I would play with them as tokens, but their smug faces would remind me that they think they're better with me, and they they should be using me as their insignificant tokens, not the other way around. Hrmph!
Anyway, I do have a use for them - my friend Jessica really likes them and collects them. Being a girl who plays Magic, she finds this extremely easy to do, as opposed to my friend Matt, who is male and as such has a much more difficult time collecting cards. Heh. Stereotypes in Magic? Naaah.
My best magic pack was when Time Spiral just came out. I bought my first pack after waiting a week or so to go to walmart. My rare was a Boogarden hell hite (sp). I WAS SO HAPPY!!! and i just tossed the rest of the pack on my dresser and wint on doing little dances and such. about a week later i relize my pack was gone. my nephew got ahold of it and luckly nothing got hurt but looking in the pack i never notecd my shiny in the back was a shiny psionic Blast! That was the best pack ive ever had, still waiting for the next one. P.S. you guy are doing great keep on going!!!!!!!!
I also had a insident at walmart when i got old forigen cards in time spiral packs. like i got a rakdos guild mage in a timespiral pack and no rare
The things I do with the pro player cards it when my mom askes my why i play that silly game at 14. I show her these people who play and all that money.
I just got around to listening to this week's show after a long first week at my internship. After realizing that it wasn't my brain skipping and was just the audio blipping a few times, I figured I'd share my story which I've bored my friends with anytime a new trader opens my binder.
In 2003, I was a real casual magic player. My major purchases to that point included 2 Odyssey precons (trounce-o-matic and one-two punch) and a playset of torment commons on ebay, and my tournaments were nil. That doesn't mean I wasn't interested, though. Friends and I would play during lunch and study hall, mostly with the same decks, every day.
That spring, our high school marching band travelled to Washington D.C. to march in the National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade, which was a big thing for me since I was lead trumpet at the time. As part of the festivities, our band director toured us around the sights of the city, and one of our stops so that we could get food was the Pentagon Mall. We had a little over an hour to eat and shop around before we were to leave to go to the next destination. With about five minutes left before I had to go to the bus, I went to the mall directory to see where the closest bathroom was when I saw in the listing...
HOLY CRAP, there's a wizards of the coast store here!!
...I don't know why I had such a fixation on a storefront now, but back then I just thought it was awesome that the company had stores of their own. At home in Pennsylvania I was nowhere near a WOTC store, but now that I was in the same building as one, I just had to see it. On the ground floor, I proceeded to run up 2 flights of escalators to reach the store out of breath. The employee must have thought I was crazy but asked if I was looking for anything. Behind the counter was a display of Magic packs, so I decided to get a pack of Legions to show that I was there. I even got a giant WOTC bag to hold it as an additional piece of memorabilia (the bag is still in my sock drawer).
I got back to the bus (a few minutes late), not opening the pack cause I knew that I could do it while travelling. Sitting in my seat, I opened the pack and read through all of the commons and uncommons, cause there were a few that I hadn't seen at that point, and then at the end she revealed herself....Akroma, Angel of Wrath.
I really don't know if that Akroma is what kept me playing magic (my first tournament was the next month at the Scourge prerelease), because I have never played her or even put her into one of my decks. But I always had the card on hand, eventually making the center of one of my pages in my trade binder. Whenever anyone would first ask if she was for trade, I would say no and proceed to bore them with the story that I just bored you with. My friends at Pitt would just leave the room at the local card store, Phantom of the Attic, when I would start up the story, them hearing it too many times.
Being a L2 DCI judge now, I work my fair share of events and don't have to worry about single pack transactions anymore, so it's hard to believe that any singular pack will ever wow me as much as the Pentagon Mall angel.
