The two color cards are not that weird. The planes have three colors, but things from there can be of any mix of colors that shard has access to. And it helps diversify the block and allow players to just play two colors and three. I highly suggest reading MaRo recent article, because it offers a lot of insight into what will be going on in Alaara. He mentioned that there will be more focus to flavor and less slaving to the theme, for example Lorwyn only had tribal creature types, ignoring changelings and beast tokens.
There won't be an actual dragon for each shard. Esper seems to get a sphinx mythic rare that will fill the wuubish slot. And the Black one seems to get a demonish guy, he's the guy with the horns, to fill it's spot. Devour sounds like the black shard's keyword or theme.
You missed a key part of ajani. Look at his colors. The see he is in the naya wallpaper. And the answer is, his colors are green's ally colors. I suspect he was even born in naya. And I think he will be the book's main character, because a planeswalker is needed to travel between the shards because they are their own little planes.
I have to admit, i am starting to get a little tired of all the ridiculous gold color cards, they are making standard to expensive for some poeple to play. The mana bases to support many of the tourny level decks is hard to get hold of. MTG needs to get back to the good old mono, and 2 color decks instead of 5 color aggro-control balohney. I personally just think that they should quit doing the wow factor and go back to onslaught and time spiral format.
as for extended, i am rejoicing, SDT was entirely to good for the format. Already affinity will be good with out that, and now pure blue control is completely dead, (no counterspell, force spike, or countertop.) also to the guy who wanted a good extended deck. Affinity will still do amazing things. not sure what combo decks will be good anymore, D-storm might, Ideal will not be good any more, also the Glittering wish Green/White aggro-control should be good. And if you have the money go ahead and build domain zoo, it will be good as well.
Wow, i almost forgot, Red Deck Wins or goyf sligh is still going to be absolutly amazing as well (becuase Countertop is now gone whoot)
cycle is back? YAY!
oh wait, what's that? they're making even MORE gold colored cards? oh well, surely it'll be allied or enemy colors, right? I mean, we've got filter lands for that.
oh wait? what's this your saying? green-white-blue COLOR CC? um, my my, isn't that just a BIT intensive for ye old standard player? why yes your right, the filter lands are going to help, but still...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
this is taken from a recent conversation my friend and I had, and I have a feeling that this is being repeated on the tounges of casual and standard players the world over. tri-color casting costs are simple rediculous, even given the amount of land present. currently I'm playing a mono-black toolbox deck and I'm praying that we get some decent 1-2 color cards.
does anybody else get the sinking feeling that maybe draft is about to get a LOT more difficult?
oh, and for the comment contest, because I really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really realy want that ashling the extinguisher, here's my entry for the week:
I think shards will be more like (insert random multicolored set here), but no where near as fair, balanced, and incredible as (use one of the following: urza's saga, Kamigawa, Mirrodin, and any core set printed within the last 15 years.). though, possibly (insert random card here) will see (type 2/legacy/vintage/block) play, it'll do horrible in limited. Irregardless, I'm sure the guys at Monday Night Magic will do a splendid job reviewing, critiquing and guiding those of us seeking their WORLD TOURNAMENT CALIBER advice about the set. where would any of us be without the intelligent words of Gavin(did you know he won a PTQ? how awesome is that?), the menthol smooth vocals of Tom, and Dereck occasionally chiming in? still playing kitchen magic and too fearful to go and fight the jerks at our Local FNM, that's where.

I for one liked Sensei's Divining Top when it came out. I'm a little surprised that it got banned, seeing as to how there was only one deck that really used it(CounterTop,or it seems that that was the only one playing it). The banning really helps my extended decks out,as CounterTop was the worst match-up for me,and now it's just kind of dead without one of it's key cards. Mono-Blue control will still be pretty decent(with stuff like Rune Snag,Remand,Hinder,Mana Leak, and of course Cryptic Command),but right now I'm thinking aggro decks will be really good in extended(really, any two colors could play a decent aggro deck with all the new stuff Shadowmoor and Eventide, and with Ravnica block).
As for Shards, from what I've seen,I'm kind of thinking a little along the lines of Azurefalcon in the fact that it's getting to expensive to play standard and the most expensive cards in the format are mostly Multi-Color cards and the filter lands. All the multi-color cards are good for decks to branch out and try different things, and some really good decks can come out of it(just think back to Ravnca block),but in doing this, most of the multi-colored cards can go for outrageous prices and with the way the economy is right now,it makes harder for players to be able to get the cards that they need to be able to play the decks they want to play.

I am trying to complete a set of FOIL ravnica on MTGO as well as finishing the Timeshifted set on MTGO. But as far as collections on MTGO, that is all I have. When it comes to physical collections, I have Unglued, Unhinged and Foil Unhinged sets.
I haven't finished either, so people who have extras come to me to trade [/shameless plug]

look in that thread - the artifact sphynx is in a pure blue card grame, but the 3 colour gargoyle is in an artifact frame with gold piping/framing little girl)
That's an optical illusion. Both cards have the same standard silver artifact frame around the edges, with either blue or gold name/type/text boxes depending upon the color.
^^^ Is what the Colored Artifact's frame will look like, note that it's only a mockup, see the rumor mill for more information.

I think SDT leaving the format is healthy too, seeing as it now stops any deck from having the ability to filter its draws. Anyway...As ridiculous as these triple colored Creatures are, I think that gets to the point where (if their focus on the 'acquisition' holds true) they can no-longer get away with printing gold cards and hoping newbies can use them...I mean as pretty as Stoic Angel is, how many newbies are going to stick that thing down turn 3 or 4 when all they have are basics? At least in 2-color decks you could pretend and usually hope (with good success) that the two colours would come out in relavent and useful ratios.
But here, I think lands at common and uncommon are really going to have to play a vital role to help all those who don't really have Toast mana bases to cast these colorful men and magics reliably
EDIT: totally forgot my main point above.
*beyond this...*, I believe Shards may bring back Mid-range and finally decks of a more pure control nature (forever. a. Teachings. player.), that has me excited...or at least the pictures are really pretty (Windwright Mage...I will own a foil playset of j00!)
I'm not so sure that Shards of Alara is going to be any good. I know this is heard every time a new set is released, but really, tricolor French vanilla creatures are kinda boring, especially if they're only slightly better than the hybrid guys, which are far easier to cast in the right decks. Additionally, this is going to make manabases even more prohibitively expensive, which has always gotten on my nerves.
hey guys, just wanted to point out that richard garfield's new game is a really bad rip off of a game for the gamecube called ikaruga. It was a 2d shooter where you had protection against one color, there were two, and you could switch to be the other color. Check it out.
I ca't read her name on the card but I can tell that her last name starts with a D big help that is right.
But to the comment contest. oh and btw I can not spell for my life.
okay so here I go.
My thoughts on the the set. It will be a amazing block season ! The art is really good. but you know the gold cards are getting a little boring and as you guys talked about,it makes it hard for new players to come in to tornment sean when they have to spend 10 $ for each new dual land that comes out(and in the end its all about getting more people in to the game anyways). I like the new set tho. I like the idea of each shard playing off of its mana. I like black red and I think it is green or something being deamons and zombies and blue white something lol being articals and control. I did I tell you I can't spell, well it dosen't matter. I like dragons but that much manafor each one come on I really want to play them in t2 or block but being that high with that many differnt colors. I LOVE THE CAT/LION THEME.
I want to see a heave wolf theme that would be intersting. but I am just talk to talk now. and I am just putting out bad ideas. Well here is to magic and hear is to you guys.
First - http://www.donhazeltine.com/ - As far as I can tell, that's the site for the guy who did the art for Unearth. He has contact info, so I'm guessing you could probably get in touch with him to get a copy autographed.
Second - I'm one of those few people who started playing Magic on MTGO. I have actually never played paper, and have no desire to do so really... the tournament thing isn't for me, and I can always get a game on demand with MTGO.
Great show as always guys. I love how you taped it as top was getting banned on the website. Half because of the actual reaction, and half because as a judge, I hated that card. As much as people were complaining that judges should do their jobs in administering slow play warnings with top, any time I PERSONALLY did, all I could hear is the player complaining that they were 'progressing the game state.' Players can't have it both ways. Okay okay, end of that rant. For now.

While there will inevitably be chase rare lands in the set (read:regular more-common-than-past-sets rare), I believe that there will be sufficient enough common and uncommon fixing as well to help smooth out the set. My only reasoning behind this is the monster that is limited formats. Draft would fall apart is half of the cards in the set are 2-3 color cards, especially since you're only getting 42 cards in a draft and therefore are more likely to play these cards.
UNLESS [SHOT IN THE DARK SPECULATION WHICH I WOULD BE MELANCHOLY ABOUT] this whole 'naming a shard' thing at the release events has a secondary purpose. Imagine if in naming a shard, your lands in your deck could tap for any of those three colors in your match. It's a super far-fetched idea that would never happen, though it's wacky enough to work (don't flame me, I know this takes away a lot of the skill in limited, and they would have had to announce this waaaaay beforehand).
I'll personally just hope for super-duper karoos and signets for my tri-colored peasant needs.
