So I'll have more for you guys in a little bit, but in anticipation of another mtg.com preview, I'm bringing you guys a very crazy Johnny card. One so full of potential for insanity and style and bombastic combos and such that your head may spin.
It's one of our last mythics and it's the center of the storm, just waiting to spill out a deluge.
Maelstrom Nexus WUBRG
Enchantment (M)
The first spell you play each turn has Cascade.
Everything you play will net you something smaller. Those of you who were talking about cascade working well with a small, tight mana curve may just have their five-color build-around-me card. Maybe expensive for that deck, but someone will find a way to use this card to stellar effect.
Who can resist the temptation of endless 2-for-1s?
THAT IS INSANE! I love every bit of it. Holy crap. Just nuts. Every Johnny will freak out, constructed guys will look for how best for Five Color to destroy (Cryptic Command that, get a free Plumeveil? Sure!), and at the kitchen table, who knows what will hit.
Love. It. That has to be a Gottlieb Original (tm).
Wow, I saw someone else speculate something like this and I thought "no way, it'll never happen". PLAYSET. NOW! This might be my favorite card from the set.
That's amazing!
Lol, lets pretend for a second you decided to somehow sneak this into blightning for example. (Like a 5 color blightning lol).
Play a bitterblossom, oh hey look! A thoughtsieze!
Play a blightning, WOOT a bitterblossom (or thoughtsieze). Play a Demigod, woot a bloodbraid elf, woot a blightning!
Crazy, crazy card. Johnnies everywhere must be salivating. I know I'm already starting to think just how it could possibly be broken.
Of course, it's not a card that has to be broken like that. Simply sticking it in a deck that has the manabase to support it, and it'll probably do something cool on its own. So it's a different sort of Johnny card than, say, Time Sieve.
I love the thought of Pondering into Ancestral Recalls or Balances in Extended if there's a way to efficiently get the thing into play. And yes, it is the perfect Johnny card, no doubt.
What we're doing here is akin to taking the text of Moby Dick, locating specific words therein, rearranging them to create a passage from Fight Club, and concluding from this evidence that Tyler Durden is based on Ahab.
likely, i Love how abusable this is... I know that a copy of this monsterous thing is heading to a head in my Sliver Queen EDH. deck. I'll Gladly play my Sliver Legion, and get another Free sliver off it! Wee..

Well that's gonna be fun with cards that cheat the mana cost.
Evoke Shriekmaw for 2, cascade into a cmc =4? Yes please!
Also cascading Boarder posts could be amazing as well.
Edit: Correct me if I'm wrong, but cascade would stack right? So if you had two of these out or if your first spell already had cascade, you would be netting 3-1s!!!

Quite interesting. But a tad expensive.

All spells having Cascade. This certainly hits the balance since its Domain but...Whhhhaaaaaaat?
Edit: Man I wished this combo'd better with Thrumming Stone. Oh well...

I would guess yes, and each instance would trigger/resolve separately resulting in 2 free spells.
Too bad it won't trigger the turn you play it though (since this would have likely been the first spell)
Not all spells. The first spell each turn.

Just an FYI, cascade skips lands. That's what makes it good instead of a crappy mechanic.
Also now we see why cards had to be randomly put on the bottom. If not one ornithopter would allow you to stack your deck.
