I dunno about the Squenix haters, but it would be quite refreshing to have a MtG game that is not some derivative of the card game itself. *here's hoping that it isn't*
I've been waiting for MtG to have a RPG of sorts, hopefully this would lead to something like that. Hopefully though, it ain't something like a console Final Fantasy XI that would totally blow.

This IS for the game we thought, but the game we thought has a little...extra to it, according to this PM I received.
The countdown game is Lord of Vermillion 2, a sequel to Square-Enix's arcade-based card game where you buy physical cards that are scanned in to use in an arcade game. It features characters from a lot of Square-Enix properties, and II will also feature characters from Magic: The Gathering, including Shivan Dragon, Serra Angel, Nicol Bolas, and Birds of Paradise.
The crossover might suggest that Square is looking towards an international release in partnership with Wizards of the Coast, although this isn't discussed in the article. (Here's my source (in Japanese): http://gamenyarth.blog67.fc2.com/)

In other news, crazy nitwits playing dress-up have also convicted the Hamburglar, the Cookie Crisp Crook, and the Frito Bandito of sundry snack-related thefts.
Seriously, what about this strikes you as remotely worthy of discussion?
It's understandable blue control players would be shocked and in denial at the notion of this card, since their decks have been dominating multiple formats for an eternity yet they've curiously never once had to deal with any counter-hosers that weren't ineffectual, narrow CRAP.
Hmm, does this actually do anything for magic? I couldnt care less about SE but magic booming in a bad economy looks good for the game. All these different products have got to help their cash flow a good bit. Especially during times where buying cards are at the bottom of the to do list.
I support it, only if it helps the game we all love.
EDIT: WTF... this is legitimately like those goofy holodiscs they use in yugioh? Awesome. showing actual card interaction on screen may be the coolest thing ever. I didnt realize it actually had cards + a scanner. Probably the next step in card gaming, glad to see wizards is smart enough to look into the genius of other companies.
Thinking about it, I hope this is a stepping stone towards Magic getting its own game like this. Maybe with a Magic Online linkup and stuff like that. It'd be awesome to play with my Paper cards over the internet and stuff.
So, Magic partners up with Squeenix. Emo antagonists with pointy hair increase sevenfold.

The only good thing about this post is the edible chocolate roaches they gave out! Mmm mmm!
*crawl crawl*
Wait a minute, edible roaches don't crawl! EDIBLE ROACHES DON'T CRAWL!
What evidence? There's one picture among six others that have no relation to Magic.
I will eat my hat if this is anything to do with MtG!
Can we have pictures of the hat-eating gerg? (Peace!)
This is cool...crossovers are always COOL in my book. This'll be a nice way of advertising Magic to a wider audience: Awe them with Magic's cool walkers and creatures so that they will eventually get intrigued and be enticed into playing.
This partnership will also open up the possibility of a SE designed game or at least a CG movie depending on reception. I think an FF stylized Magic game could be cool.
I googled the Story behind this game (Lord of Vermillion) and here's the Wiki:
Quote from From Wikipedia »
In ancient times, before the creation of the worlds lived God. He opened his heart and brought forth a vermillion stone in order to create seven different worlds. Whomsoever held the vermillion stone held the power to create worlds, and would reign over the seven worlds as a god, the "Lord of Vermilion". The seven worlds existed side by side in harmony for millennia, their inhabitants separated by boundaries and unable to interfere with one another... until the "Great Collapse".
The lord of the human world, consumed by ambition, sought to use the forbidden magic of the vermillion stone, called the "Arcana", in order to become a god. However, he was unable to wield the power and the Arcana was shattered into seven pieces and scattered amongst the seven worlds, destroying their boundaries. The six worlds were drawn into the human world and they merged together. With the six races of the six worlds thrust into the human world, chaos and war broke out.
Ages later, the world, called the "Land of Acheron", is still in turmoil. The six "Lords" of the six races sow strife across the land, warring for each other's Arcana. The player takes the role of a legendary warrior who holds the seventh Arcana and seeks to obtain the Arcana and upset the balance of the world, gathering an army of "Familiars" who hold faith in the legend of the "Lord of the Vermillion".
Note the bolded part and I see why WotC was comfy with this crossover. The Vermillion mythos is almost parallel to Magic's concept of the multiverse (separated worlds only accessible by special magics) and at the same time almost mirrors the Alara storyline. I guess we know (or can speculate) what Nicol Bolas is up to now isn't he?
However, this raises a possible question - would, in time, there be a LoV to MtG crossover? Or even a marrying of the two?

Its funny every one is making final fantasy references because that is all they know in the USA. While it is true that FF is big over there, its just a tiny kitten the the elephant that is dragon quest. That series (DQ) is HUGE over there, so much that when the remake of DQ5 came out for ds in japan, it put it on the best selling list for the entire world. It routinely drops its big elephant foot on FF when it comes to sales of other games also.
Its far far far far more likely that if they do any crossover in the video game (which they won't) it will be DQ characters.
BTW, if you never gave DQ a try, you should. Its far superior to FF in any way, there is a reason it is bigger than FF in japan. They know their RPGs over their, that is why they get so many.

I Agree, but DQ is a little too cartoon-like to link to MTG. especially with the recent kick-assery of graphics that FF series has incorporated recently.
It's understandable blue control players would be shocked and in denial at the notion of this card, since their decks have been dominating multiple formats for an eternity yet they've curiously never once had to deal with any counter-hosers that weren't ineffectual, narrow CRAP.
Don't expect this thing to ever release stateside. We don't have arcades, we don't have large enough card-gaming culture, and even if we did we're too spread out.
LOL!

yeah because dragon quest is not popular over here
There are good FF games and there are good DQ games. They were made by separate companies for a number of years (I'd say the majority of their years.)
but as for "magic cards coming up in other games" thats kind of neat.
as for the american arcade. yeah its dying (not dead.. but close). but that doesn't mean they won't bring it over here. I wouldn't underestimate the game playing audience over here.

I just want people who redraft to admit this:
"I can't draft objectively unless I am able to guarantee that I receive at least 3 rares. I am also better than most average/new players so I want to make sure that I get the best rares and they end up with worse ones. I care more about the monetary value of cards than actually playing the game for decent prizes."
I went on the site and the flash looked like a bandana guy with a sword.

...And we still don't get any of these arcades outside of Japan, right? If that's true, I'm not interested. While LoV has nice concept and great visuals, it means nothing unless you're Japanese. And there's almost no way to make a home version of the game, unless you're making an Eye of Judgment ripoff (okay, not ripoff, but it is similar).
Don't hold your breath.
The original game was only in arcades, and the requirement of outside materials to play it makes it kind of ehhh to show up in american arcades.
The gameplay is similar to Eye of Judgement, which was a WoTC partnered thing, but still is not really easy to translate to consoles.

True, but the fact that Eye of Judgement exists, makes it possible, if only slightly. It also helps WotC was involved in the Eye of Judgement game.

Thanks to DarkNightCavalier & Magus of the Sheep from Scuttlemutt Productions for the cool signature and avatar.
But you could transfer the gameplay to the DS: (virtual-)card gameplay on the touchscreen, action happens on the upper screen.
No, because this game uses physical cards that you own.
And Eye of Judgement was very limited, you had 9 squares to place the cards, and many of the squares had enemies in them.
The arcade consoles of these have a very large area to place cards on it seems.

It COULD be done...I think we all remember the e-Reader for the GBA...but honestly, I'm not too big a fan here. I don't like the idea of Magic getting mixed with another property. I was really (I suppose foolishly) hoping for a FF1-style game featuring Magic characters only.
