The card that made me say wow was Goliath Sphinx. In the rare slot, for a whopping 5UU, you can get a 8/7 flier. This has nuts written all over it.
lol?
Obviously this card is complete garbage, as in the since it takes up a rare slot. I know Mark (the guy who makes MTG) had the intention of making cards "powered-down" so everything is not a bomb, but this card is a complete disgrace to the Magic community. The one thing people overlook in this card is its creature type, which is "Sphinx." If I am not mistaken, when I type in the search engine for Sphinx, I find VERY flavorable cards like Enigma, Jwar Isle, Lost Truths, and Steel wind. But this card comes out and smacks us in the face. It's just as disappointing as if the made another Akroma angel, but for 5UU you get a vanilla flier. It was just a downright let down when I was getting ready to get excited for another sphinx to enter the metagame.
Wow! This card sucks.
Mass in Numbers [R]
Sorcery
Multikicker [R]
Put a 1/1 red Goblin creature token with haste onto the battlefield. Put an additional 1/1 red Goblin creature token with haste onto the battlefield for each time Mass in Numbers was kicked.
From this set, Abyssal Persecutor just blew me away. I know a lot of people have mixed feelings about this but as a person that favors mono black I just adored this and see it as a must get play set. I agree with how a lot of people don't see it as a $20 card which has now jumped up to $30 in pre-sale. I would like to actually see more dislike towards it so its price will drop haha, but unfortunately I think it just can't avoid the eyes of players. This card is just wowing me for all formats. I don't see it extremely useful in draft due to the minimal removal you are going to want to gear towards yourself but I do see him in standard as a monster. I think gatekeepers will be replaced by fleshbags just so this guy can eat at your face for a while then the sacrificial zombie will help you win. EDH this guy can just be personally fun. I am interested to see how multiplayer duels go since you set up your opponents not to lose but they will fight over who stays alive longer. I think he combos well with the power of removal in black right now. I have seen harsh feelings towards Abyssal saying that BSA makes him worthless, but Doom Blade fixes this. I know the same goes for Purge but I think black and B/x has the most powerful removal in the standard format giving you a lot of room to swing in 6 for only 4 mana.
Again this is what I personally think is THE card of the set. I will gladly open dozens of packs to hopefully pull a playset, if not I will get him by other means, but no matter what I am getting the Abyssal Persecutor.
My WOW card is Amulet of Vigor! Hello Manlands! Amulets synergy is CRAZY! How many cards come into play tapped? HEAPS its a very common drawback and with this card it never exists! And for 1 mana all I could do is say WOW. Why didn't they just name the card "Tapped? Whats tapped? I don't see anything tapped?". It jsut works so well in both extended and Standard formats. To tell you the truth. It was more droooool...... than WOW. But the effect is still there.
Here's ma GOBLIN:
Magma Harraser
Creature - Goblin Berserker (2RR) Rare
Whenever Magma Harraser attacks, you may destroy target mountain and deal damage to Magma Harraser equal to the number of mountains your opponent controls.
Psychotic Goblin - R

Alright, for the Goblin contest, I present Goblin Bomb Technician/Bom, Goblin Bombardier!
Goblin Bomb Technician 1RRR
Creature-Goblin Artificer
Mythic Rare
Whenever a Goblin you control is put into a graveyard from play, put a mistake counter on Goblin Bomb Technician.
At the beginning of your end step, if Goblin Bomb Technician has 6 or more mistake counters on it, you may flip it.
----
Bom, Goblin Bombardier
Legendary Creature-Goblin Warrior 1RRR, Remove a mistake counter from Bom, Goblin Bombardier: Bom, Goblin Bombardier deals 5 damage to target creature you don’t control or player and 2 to a Goblin you control. If a Goblin you control dealt damage by Bom, Goblin Bombardier this turn is put into a graveyard this turn, put a mistake counter on Bom, Goblin Bombardier.
Broken as hell? Probably. But bu God if this wasn't fun to make. I wanted the idea of a crazy bomber who didn't really care about who he was firing on; pretty Goblin like behavior if you ask me.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
As for the Wow contest, my choice is Joraga Warcaller.
As a casual player for the most part, I nearly cheered when I saw this. In a mono-green elf deck, this card is, to put it plainly, the nuts.
Fun trip to Magical Christmasland: T1 Llanowar. T2 Elvish Archdruid. T3 this, all your elves get +2 off him and 1 from the Archdruid. With Garruk on the board before he hits play, his first ability is +1:Add a counter to Joraga Warcaller when he is cast.
It's so beautiful I might just cry.
Tell us about a preview card from this or any set that made you say "WOW!"
Recent sets have been more likely to make me say "meh". The last preview card that had a real shock impact for me was Arcum Dagsson. Mainly because I couldn't get past the fact that the ability was like Tinker for zero mana!
And here's a goblin for you...
And don't bother telling me he's not good. After a year and a half we've all worked that out for ourselves.

i can think of a couple of instances where this card could put Ion, shield of Emeria to the sideboard.
in monowhite control, day of judgement and marshal coup are rather nasty against your own creatures. it was either get luminarch ascension to go off, exile enough enemy creatures for one of the few in your deck to get through, or Iona lock the opponent.
with admonition angel i see a different approach, using journey to nowhere, oblivion rings, and paths to stop their creatures, and using Admonition Angel to exile your creatures. (if your one of the few with the play set of baneslayer,) they have either 2 options, get beat in the face with admonition angel, or get rid of her and hope they have the removal for the baneslayers/other creatures your holding.
This new angel is rather nasty, and the artwork is just rather beautiful. (plus the emeria angel promo art in glass is verynice.

we are each of us angels with one wing, and we can only truly fly by embracing one another.
Mahamoti Djinn. 5/6 flyer for 4UU. Goliath Sphinx. 8/7 flyer for 5UU ONE MORE MANA. Don't see what the huge problem is. Kids these days, just aren't happy unless it's game-win for 3 mana or less. Unless it's BSA, then it's $50.
I'd say the card that made me say "WOW" is Spell Contortion, because this is what they have resorted to giving blue. In my mind this card is near useless for a few reasons. In the early game this is a much much worse Mana Leak, and depending on your mana situation probably a worse cancel.
By the time you can get a card back, or two cards if you're daring enough, this spell becomes so easy to play around it is barely even a counter anymore, just really expensive draw. For someone who loves playing counterspells, it's hard to see them shy away from them entirely because new players don't like getting their stuff countered. Okay that's enough ranting.
The wacky suicidal goblin card is much like a siege-gang that doesn't give the little goblins a choice of blowing themselves up.
Demolition Crew 2RR
Creature - Goblin Shaman
When Demolition Crew enters the battlefield, put two 1/1 Goblin
creature tokens onto the battlefield.
Whenever a Goblin deals combat damage to a creature or a player, sacrifice it. If you do, Demolition Crew deals 2 damage to that creature or player.
I kind of wished Goliath Sphinx had some kind of useless ability on it like Jwar Jwar does. So you play lighting bolt? Well I.... LOOK AT THE TOP CARD OF MY LIBRARY THEN FLIP IT OVER ON TOP OF MY LIBRARY!!!! BEHOLD THE CARD I WILL GET NEXT TURN!!!!
THAT ONE GOBLIN 1R
Creature - Goblin Berserker

Thanks for the contest! Love the show! Here's a few goblins I came up with. If I win I'll burn a Kor Firewalker (who made my, and many other's, fun goblin decks worthless) in honor of the goblin.

the card that made me say WOW!!
Halimar Excavator
i am a fan of allies, and now they have a chance, in numbers, and in abilities. if anyone on here knows me, then they know i love to mill, and the downside of a mill deck, creatures. upon hearing about this card i thought, another rare i have to fight for, seeing it at common was the moment i said WOW. this card is amazing. yes idte, but hey, what doesn't. upon seeing this card i already have a deck ready for it, hedron crabs, allies, and bounce. anything i will lose, i will simply return to my hand. play halimar excavator, ability fires, end turn. you attack with a 2/2, i block. you think you have me so you pump it, i play aether tradewinds, call to heal, into the roil, unsummon. and now i am up a resource, and you are down an offensive creature. you end your turn. my turn. repeat steps 1-3. WOW!! the sad thing is, this deck is already working amazingly!
my goblin 1RU
goblin spelunker

flavor-
the paranhas seemed much less fearsome after the first bite.
my logic, how would a goblin fish, face first! and would a paranha stand a chance? not really, sure they get a bite, but then the goblin lifts his head out and now has a meal, at the cost of a wound. same wreckless behavior, same iconic/ironic benefits of being a goblin.
The card that made me say wow the most is Phyrexian Negator. I started playing around the Mirrodin block. A lot of artifacts were indeed powerful and had hundreds of possibilities. Yet a simple card such as the Negator just screams to be used. In my opinion it ranks up there with cards like Gallowbraid and Minion of the Wastes. These cards are really powerful but have a drawback that makes you build a deck that is specifically designed to abuse these cards the way they were meant to be abused. Did I say abused? I meant utilized.
A first turn 5/5 trample is nothing to scoff at especially when you are on the receiving end of it. The drawback of having to sacrifice permanents when it is dealt damage isn't that scary when you can get your opponent down to a possible 5 life on turn 3 makes the risk well worth it. That early in the game there is very little anyone can do short of unsummon or a next turn terminate.
My goblin card:
Frag Goblin 2RRR

When Frag Goblin deals combat damage to defending player, you may sacrifice Frag Goblin. If you do, Frag Goblin deals 2 damage to defending player and up to 2 target creatures that player controls.
