Tom & Gavin & Jack & Eric & Conley & Steve - Your Monday Night Magic news team!
I went to the Northern Californian regional pre-release in Burlingame; the event was smaller than usual, but still a blast. I did 3-1-0 in sealed and 3-0-0 in the draft, even though I didn't pull any chase bombs. I meet some cool people and got good insight.
In sealed I played a Black/Red aggro deck, my curve topped out with a single 5CC card, Halo Hunter; I played the usual 17 lands, even though in a different format I might have played 16. I had a ton of removal, 2 urges, 1 tomb hex, 1 smoother, 1 reckoning, 1 searing, 1 blazing torch, 1 torch slinger, and a cherry bomb on top, chain reaction. Multiple mulligans killed my first match, but I ended up ripping through everything else.
In Draft, I cracked a Luminacrch, then a Kabira Evangel, then ended up pulling a nice White/Red/Blue ally deck with 2 Join the ranks, some good removal and a Celestial Colonnade. Join the ranks came through every time even if it just killed a creature; it came through at the last match with a 4-for-0 with a Kabira out and I'm at 1 life. Allies were begging for a flash creature, let's see another one please.
Pligrim's Eye is my #1 card in the set, Creeping Tar Pits is #1 manland, Treasure Hunt's going to be NUTS!!! Allies are now constructed playable, and Smother (mmm... like gravy!!!)
So the word was Jace is so expensive because it will see play in eternal formats; isn't brainstorm restricted in vintage?
I also heard that Bajuka Bog is arguably the most disruptive card in the set because of the problems it's going to cause for Dedge and Threshold. What you think?
I wasnt sure if I should post here or in the last episode post. Either way...
The last card that made me say "wow", was Lotus Cobra from Zendikar. It blew me away when I first saw it on the spoiler. Its like a BoP, that can also lay a beating. Plus getting free mana for playing a land is awesome. It has the potential to be played in many different decks. 3 months later and I still cant find them for much less than 15 each. Good card!
-As for the Goblin card, here's what I came up with;
1RR Suicidal Goblin - 1/2
Sacrifice Suicidal Goblin: Suicidal Goblin deals 2 damage to each creature and 3 damage to you.
"Step 1; Light the fuse. Step 2; Run head-on towards your enemies. Step 3; ....."

- Let's just say, I've been around since the Ice Age
One of the cards that widened my eyes while I was perusing spoilers was Jwari Shapeshifter. It's long been said that Allies needed more strong, low-cost options, and she definitely fits the bill. My first thought was of a two-mana Turntimber Ranger, guarded my countermagic. I had never thought about getting serious with Allies until I saw that card. Of course, the saucy redhead in the art didn't exactly stifle the eye-widening, either. But maybe that's just me.
Great Show. I played in a Sealed event on Saturday, ended up playing R/B with a U splash (Unfortunately my strongest cards were spread across the color wheel). I chose the U splash due to two welkin terns, and was trying to decide between Treasure Hunt and Aether Tradewinds as my 23rd card.
Most of the websites (and most of the players near me) have been raving about Treasure Hunt and while I believed in the power of the card, my gut told me that Aether Tradewinds would be better in the format. Luckily another good Limited player eyes bugged out and told me that Peel from Reality was crazy back in the day (I only started playing since Shards, though I have been performing well in Limited), that there was no question which to play.
Aether Tradewinds made me go "Wow!" more than say Abyssal Specter or Seering Blaze because it's not an expected "1st pick." The card was very versatile in a whole bunch of situations and having looked up Peel from Reality, I have to say I'm glad Aether Tradewinds bounces permanents of all kinds.
My favorite play with it happened in the 4th round of the Sealed Tournament. Having won the second game against my opponent I knew my Surrakar Mauraders were going to be important and how much of a pain my opponents Quicksand lands were going to be. The third game I was ready, when my opponent tapped the Quicksand to kill my Marauder I bounced the guy back to my hand and sent another of my opponent's lands back into his hand. On turn four (I had a slower deck) I had all my colors and took control of the game while his turn four consisted of playing his second land and looking generally unhappy. This was the biggest swing in tempo I had throughout all my games the entire game.
The card that wowed me most would have to be a Luminarch Ascension i opened at the Zendikar prerelease. I went 4-0 that day and at least half my wins were due to that awesome enchantment. I had an incredibly solid pool with 3 Journey To Knowhere, 3 Sky Ruin Drake, 2 Makindi Shieldmate, 2 Kraken Hatchling, 2 Hedron Crab, 2 Cancels, 1 Day Of Judgment and a foil Archive Trap.
I found it quite amusing how much people disregarded the Ascension, as when I dropped it turn 2 in the first round my opponent smirked, loudly pronouncing that, "that card should never make the maindeck, noob!". He grinned, laying down a Cliff Threader on his turn. His smile turned a bit though when I dropped a Kraken Hatchling on turn 3, which eventually led to him swearing and pointing burst lightnings at me, frantically trying to stop me from beating his face in with 4/4 angels.
Those angels also won the last game in the final match for me, when I got the god-draw of
T1: Land, Kraken Hatchling
T2: Land, Luminarch Ascension
T3: Land, Cancel
T4: Land, Day Of Judgment
T5: Sky Ruin Drake
T6: Angels FTW!!
As for a goblin I thought this one up:
Goblin Demolitions Expert R
Creature- Goblin Scout C
Haste
When Goblin Demolitions Expert deals combat damage to a player, sacrifice it, then
Goblin Demolitions Expert deals 3 damage to target player. Squee was surprised when after his first day of training, he was told he was perfect for the job.
1/1
I remember logging onto the Wizard's website on the first day of Planar Chaos previews. On the left sidebar was a Wrath of God, I bugged out because there was supposed to be a preview card. All the sudden my screen went through some Matrix stuff and on-screen the card turned into Damnation!!! WOW, Wizard's will NEVER be able to top that preview, it was perfect marketing.
The "Wow!" card for me was Urge to Feed. That's basically perfect design - it has a relevant effect, a flavorful theme, and awesome art. I love that card.
Here's a Goblin:
Goblin Reinforcements - 2R
Creature - Goblin Warrior
Goblin Reinforcements can attack the turn it comes into play, but not the turn after that.
3/3
Refraction trap was probably the biggest wow, I almost didn't put it in my deck but then when I started using it and realized I could use it against defending creatures while attacking, it became an awesome spell, the great thing about it is it will fit in so many different situations, if you're attacking, defending or just someone is trying to burst lightning something, you can just throw it in there and just !@#% everything up!
And as for my goblin,
Goblin Terrorist
1RR
Haste
When goblin terrorist deals combat damage to a player, sacrifice it and do an extra 2 damage to that player and 1 damage to all creatures that player controls.
2/2
The card preview that really made me go "WOW" was Damnation. I followed saying wow with "Damn!" Seeing damnation was a glorious moment for a blue/black control player like me, Wrath of God just didn't feel as badass as much as Damnation did.
As for my Goblin Card entry... I present to you
Goblin Brothers 3RR
Haste, First Strike
Whenever Goblin Brothers deals damage, it deals damage equal to its power to itself.
4/5
"They love to fight so much that they turn amongst themselves just to see who gets to deal the final blow."
blind rage goblin 3RRR
creature- goblin
when this card declares an attacks your opponent turns all of their creatures face down and rearranges them randomly, then you select one creature and that creature must block this card. your opponent then flips all of their creatures face up.
5/3
I absolutely loved Eldrazi Monument. When that card was spoiled for me so many thoughts wet through my mind on how agro was going to make a stand and stay in the forefront of standard for a little while longer.
Also, here's my goblin:
Blood-soaked Shrine 1R
Tribal Enchantment - Goblin
Whenever a Creature you control attacks you may pay R. If you do you may have that creature gain +2/+2, first strike or trample. If you do, flip a coin. If you lose, sacrifice that creature
"Even after years of watching themselves die, those goblins never learned the price of the shrines power"
To be honest, the card that really made me blow my top was Quest for Ula`s Temple. I`m a huge Lovecraft fan, so the possibility of a way to make Cthulhu and co. playable is making me think about decks like never before. Yes, I am a Timmy.
Here`s my Goblin:
Goblin Chef 1R
1/1
You may sacrifice up to three goblins to give all other goblins you control a +1/+1 until end of turn. Play this ability only during either player`s upkeep.
Talf, Lava Tosser R
Legendary Creature - Goblin
Haste
Each attacking creature gets -X/-X equal to the amount of mountains you control.
2/2
Omnath simply blew me away. Not a card I love, but the design of it was just soaking with flavor, and just pure awesome. It really opened up to me the flavor that goes into sets, and I really appreciate that WotC puts so much effort to flavor.

"I've always been a fan of reality by popular vote" - Stephen Colbert (in response to Don McLeroy)
The card that blew me away was Abyssal Persecutor. A giant 6/6 for 2BB is crazy not to mention the flying and trample that makes this card incredible. Yes he comes at a price (you can't win the game) but any player who is willing to run him in a deck already has a couple answers. I could see him more balanced at another time but not with so much removal currently in T2. This card is... "WOW".
An interesting goblin card to see would be Goblin Kamikaze.
Goblin Kamikaze
1RRR
Sacrifice Goblin Kamikaze: deal 1 damage to all Goblins and 2 damage to all other creatures and players.
Landfall- If a land entered the battlefield this turn, you may sacrifice Goblin Kamikaze and instead deal 1 damage to all Goblins and 3 damage to all other creatures and players
This is definitely not a type 2 card, but as a new player to Magic that had no idea how upkeep triggered abilities worked, I was amazed when I saw Thallid! Not only did you get to place counters, which I thought were however many you wanted on it, in your upkeep, but that you could then just spam the board with creature tokens to win the game at the end of anyone's turn. To beat all, I thought I got the deal of a lifetime when I paid my friend $2.00 for his beat to pieces Thallid from his collection of junk cards that he sometimes traded, guaranteeing me a win whenever I played it during our often 5-8 way multiplayer games during lunch in high school. Only a month later, when someone described that upkeep triggered abilities only happen once per a specific upkeep, did I feel like the total chump for getting an even chumpier piece of green junk for my hard earned green money! Well, I thought this would make people laugh at when I was a n00b only 10 years ago (Yes, it was not that far back!).
RU
Goblin Powder Monkey
Creature: Goblin Pirate Soldier
Whenever Goblin Powder Monkey is put into a graveyard from play, flip a foin. If the coin comes up heads, Goblin Powder Monkey and it deals 5 damage to you and each creature all opponents control. If the coin comes up tails, Goblin Powder Monkey deals 5 damage to each creature you control and each opponent.
1/1
And so it was predicted in the privateers of Mercadia by a coinflip on the day what the fate of the ship and crew would be if a goblin was ever in charge of the battleship's powder magazine: Heads - anybody near the ship loses their heads! Tails - any boatnear the ship loses their tails!
