@Chad: Hahaha.....you know when it's too windy....When it rips your stunt kite off of 250lb test line, when the wind eddies and makes the kite dip so fast you can't react and end up popping 2-3 carbon-graphite spars, when you can't even think of putting up a parafoil because you don't have a windbuggy and you definitely can't keep ahold of the thing, even when weighing nearly 300 lbs...
Oh! If you're on 250lb test line, I'm guessing you're also already using heavy-gauge carbon and have screened sails... what kind of windspeeds are we dealing with, anyway?
And I hate to encourage big expenditures, but you really out to go for a buggy. They're a blast! My grandma still talks about a time we took her for some rides out in the desert (she lived there at the time), having a good time until the wind changed something like +10MPH very quickly. Oh, and until she saw the video we took, realizing just how close to the ground she was.
My dad once strapped himself to a parafoil for buggying. He was lucky there was a big hill between him and the bay - also, that if not for that hill, there'd be a nice stretch of water before you hit I-80... yeah, lesson learned: always have a quick-release.
@Kank: Yeah, I've just been cutting down portion-size, having less sweets (ice cream is a stress relief tool for me....>_<), and trying to add in some extra exercise. I'm not really counting calories per se, but just trying to be generally more away of how much I eat and what I eat. I've started substituting more healthy options as they are available. One of the big things was cutting out caffeinated beverages. That really helped cut my sugar intake.
@Chad: The 250 lb test and carbon spars were on two different kites. I haven't used screened sails before, at least not to my knowledge. And around here, most windspeeds average around 40-45 with gusts topping in around 75. We were at a kite festival this spring where the general speed was much lower, but Idaho is prone to microbursts. A couple of these occurred in the afternoon and just snapped the strings on a couple of parafoils that were staked out.
I've wanted to try buggying, but my father's the one with the nice kites. I don't really have the money right now to get deeper into it.

I think it's a good sign about civilization to know that there will always be somebody around to let us know how to deal with hookers, whether they're dead, alive, undead, or something else Mel cooks up in his cave....er.. .sorry, dungeon.

Mine was reasonable quiet. This year and last I've been going to a friend's house, who has family over. But this time there was a most impatient child who seemed hellbent on setting off fireworks in full daylight. And wouldn't stop nagging me about my $20 firework, which was the biggest there. Not as big as last year's, when I just sought the biggest, most involved one available, such that the short description of effects (normally "yellow sparks with crackles" or whatever) had to be acronymized to fit on the label. Still, was a reasonably good firework, particularly for its price, and we had fun with our other smaller bits, too.
No missing hair, though. My friend and I were a rather conservative about safety - the news item about the New Yorker who blew his arm off with a mortar launcher the night before may have helped, and the fact that this friend's neighbor was launching similar mortars (highly illegal here in CA)...

Yeah, we went to a friends house for a BBQ and some games like the wrap-the-balls-on-a-string-around-a-pole game and finished it off with some Rock Band and fireworks. It may sound rather ho-hum, but I'd have to say it was one of the better fourths we've had in quite some time!
That's awesome! Do you figure the interview will be a little thing after all these other steps? I can't imagine them needing to find anything out in an interview that couldn't be seen in paperwork.
and some games like the wrap-the-balls-on-a-string-around-a-pole game
I don't remember seeing this little bit the first time I read the post. What is this game?
That friend I spent my fourth with had his birthday on the eighth, and as he's into Lego I got him Creationary. It's basically Pictionary, but you assemble your subject from the set of Lego pieces in the box - which is somewhat challenging, as the piece selection isn't generous. I'm finding I like the game an awful lot, didn't realize how much I've wanted a Pictionary game that uses a different skillset. Though maybe I've always approached it wrong, as I'm finding that you just need to make a caricature of the item at hand (particularly when trying to make, say, a tiger)...

@Chad, Kris went to immigration the other day to ask about the interview. They told her it was just to confirm everything we've already told them, so the permanent residence is pretty much confirmed. That, and I need to pay themn $500, which is addition to the $900 I paid them at the beginning of the process.
@Kank, I hereby boycott your version of Creationism (along with Google and Facebook)....the game where your forced to draw humans riding on dinosaurs, and Halo diving off pteradactyl's
@Kank: I've played that game before. It was pretty okay. I'm not a huge fan of horseshoes anyway, so I probably enjoyed it less than most. It killed time while I was out camping for a weekend.
@Pete and Kris: Hooray for interviewing. Boo for more money. I guess it really tests if you want to be in the country or not, huh? Hope everything goes smoothly for the interview.

@Pete: That's a pretty good job getting it fixed up. As our monitors' gammas may be set differently, it seems a little dark in places. Also, the eyes don't seem to be the same between the pictures. The right one (on viewing) seems smaller and oddly shaped.

Very cool!
Those are all dessert items shaped like sushi?
That would actually get me to eat sushi then!
(I can't stand the stuff.)
@Rick, (accidently wrote Rock first, oddly fitting) Yeah, she's a lot closer to Canadian but not really. I think if she became a citizen she could really call herself Canadian, and that'll take three years before she can even apply. I don't know if you know this but you're kinda the reason Kris and I started talking, so our whole relationship is because of you..... so umm.... Thanks!
@Sushi, I hate it to, but that's not saying much, I'm a really picky eater.
@Kank: Yup! It's all dessert items. The Onigiri (traditionally filled rice-balls with a seaweed wrapping) is just crust-less cheesecake cut up into a similar shape with a green-apple fruit roll-up as the seaweed. The Twinkie sushi is a piece of twinkie cut across the length with a Swedish Fish or a Gummy Shark tied over the top with a piece of Pull-and-peel licorice. They are INCREDIBLY sweet, almost overly so. I had, I think, 5 pieces (which is less than a full twinkie). We also ended up using the chocolate sauce to dip into and it made it even more for the fat-kid in all of us.
@Rick, Kank, and Pete: Why no love for the sushi? I think it's tastes wonderful! Of course, I've been pretty spoiled for it, because we had a top-ranked sushi chef that ran a restaurant in our town for a fairly long time. Sadly, I've found I'm allergic to shellfish, so a lot of my favorite rolls are now off-limits.

I'm not a big fan of seafood in general. I'll eat tuna, shrimp, the occasional lobster and fish & chips from time to time, but only a few times a month if that even. I don't even like the non-seafood sushi items, like the rice rolls or what not. I know people that refuse to eat Mexican food, which is completely beyond me. I could eat Mexican every day for the rest of my life and be fine with it. All of the extra salt and saturated fat would like reduce my lifespan overall though!
I don't know if you know this but you're kinda the reason Kris and I started talking, so our whole relationship is because of you..... so umm.... Thanks!
Yep, I remember that. I even commented on the Special Occasions thread Kris started back when you proposed. Come to think of it, shame on you both for not inviting me to be a honorary virtual best man!

@Rick, Kris and I barely had a real life wedding, and no online wedding. However, if we did you would definetely be invited.
@FREE MONEY! I found this program that runs in Ontario that will pay me to go to college. So, I'm looking into two possible classes.... 1) Robotics, which I'm already accepted for.... it's in a city just outside Hamilton so I'd have to travel there everyday. It's a 12 week program, and will teach me everything I need to know
2) Video Game Programmer and Designer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and it's in Hamilton!!!!!!!!!! I have a meeting tomorrow to find out if I qualify for it, if I don't I'll go for the robotics one.
@Alden, Sushi hate, I won't eat anything that comes from the ocean.... or seas, or lakes, rivers, streams, creeks, Etc
EDIT: Went to the interview today and I was accepted into the program. They made me take tests! Took me off guard but apparently I passed. Howerver, they told me the Second Career thing sucks, so I'm applying for something else. If I get it I'm college bound in August.
@Pete: Huzzah! Good job getting accepted! Being in school is as good as being employed. At least you're doing something positive with yourself. And, hey, Robotics is an awesome field to be going into. Albeit.....by the post, I'm not sure which program you got into....
@Seafood haters: I'm in the same boat. I'm actually not a huge fan of fish outside of sushi. Even then, I have sushi only occasionally. It's good, but I won't go out of my way for it.
@Zith: Mmmmm! Grilled ham and cheese sammiches! They sound much more amazing when you call them by their French name. And that's interesting. I've never seen a grilling/baking combination used before for sandwiches. However, I've over-baked open sandwiches to avoid burning before. It sounds like a very successful way to do it, though.
@Kank: Tex-mex or real Mexican?

The real deal. I'm not above some Tex-mex (chili and fajitas count as Tex-mex too), but I'm far more interested in the real stuff. Carnitas burritos, shredded beef tacos, enchiladas with real Mexican queso, authentic seasoned rice and frijoles, man, I am so there.
I'm not too snooty to pass up Taco Bell from time to time. We actually live right by one of the best Taco Bells period.
(We have to constantly take people there to prove it for the "Best Taco Bell? Pshaw! There is no such thing, all Taco Bells suck!" crowd.)
We're about 7 miles away from a decent On the Border location, but when I really want the real thing, my favorite Mexican restaurant is about a 45 minute drive away, Colina de Oro.
I want some now even.
Hmmm....if I ever visit, you'll have to take me to said Taco Bell. I hate Taco Bell and find most of them disgusting.
On the flip side, I actually did have Mexican last night at my favorite restaurant here. I had their Pollo Ranchero, which I hadn't before. It was as good as any other dish I've had. It's very good and very authentic. In fact, it's where most of the Hispanics in the area prefer to go out to dinner. You know it's good when you're one of the few white people there. Plus, I'm good friends with the owner...so....good stuff.

You could've pushed me harder for that Taco Bell with that sales pitch, Kank; you've piqued my curiosity.
Wonderful news coming from many sides these days. Here's hoping that works out for you; school's always good and fun.
My computer's been returned (after some unexpected delays) and now has a bit of cord permanently sticking out of it. And this weekend is the Berkeley Kite Festival for me: second day coming up. They broke the most giant octopus kites record today with 22! We're hoping for 25, what with this being the 25th BKF, but the guy with a few more is being reticent; we'll see if that changes tomorrow.
Post by Edit: That didn't, but we did put up the largest octopus kite, which we think is somewhere around the world's seventh largest kite. I manned the kill line for it, which is more fun than it sounds cause it also means I'm one of the people everyone asks questions of. Was also fun watching it move the truck it was anchored to an inch or two every once in a while - something like five feet over the course of its two or three hour flight - which eventually forced us to put it down. Turns out a wheel isn't the best place to strap a kite that'll pull something like 1500lbs (and that's as weak as they could make it). Good fun, though, well worth getting this terrible sunburn over. Ran into an old, old friend of ours from the kiting heyday, first time we've seen him in a little over ten years, and saw the Bay Area Sundowners for the first time in years. A really fun second day, overall. I'll probably link some pictures and videos I took when I get them online.
In other news, just made some brownies. And I've recently run across a cereal with a friend of mine. We bought it for being the most pretentious-looking box on the shelf, but it's actually the best cold cereal I've had. (And wouldn't you know it, their site's fairly pretentious, too.)
Hm. What's the best vegetable, and what's its best preparation?
Zith: That sounds awesome. How long was the tail to the kite? I'd love to see pictures or video of it. The Bay Area Sundowners are fairly well famous...it's cool that they turned out. Sounds like it was very, very much fun to be had.
As for vegetables....that's a tough decision. It's probably a toss-up between fresh garden peas steamed with a little butter and salt or fresh garden spinach with a great bacon ranch dressing. Either is a godsend to me. However.....if you count garlic as a vegetable, than probably garlic and in any preparation. It's a staple around my house, my parent's, my wife's parents (when they were alive), and all the relatives. To wit, obviously I don't mind kissing someone with garlic breath. In fact, it's a little sexy.

@Kank: Tex-mex or real Mexican?

As for vegetables....that's a tough decision. It's probably a toss-up between fresh garden peas steamed with a little butter and salt or fresh garden spinach with a great bacon ranch dressing. Either is a godsend to me. However.....if you count garlic as a vegetable, than probably garlic and in any preparation. It's a staple around my house, my parent's, my wife's parents (when they were alive), and all the relatives. To wit, obviously I don't mind kissing someone with garlic breath. In fact, it's a little sexy.
