and maybe some high-end shaving products and a nice badger brush for my burgeoning shaving hobby.
Shaving badgers now are we? I know I always prefer my beavers freshly shaved!
On other news, I won a $500 gift card to Apple, and not being an Apple products fan per se, I'm hard pressed to figure out what to spend it on. Next week comes out the new iPod touches, so I'm planning on getting two of those (one for me and one for the missus). I'd even stopped by the nearest Apple store last night and the customer service person said to wait a week for the new one to come out that comes with a camera and has video conferencing features to boot (as if I'd ever need to use video conferencing). I like the idea of being able to access MTGSalvation anywhere I have Wi-Fi access with something smaller than our current cell phone.
Nice win there, Kank. Not sure what I'd get from Apple, either. I've grown to dislike iTunes more and more over time, to the point that I haven't updated my old iPod in about two years, so unless I could figure out how to load music on an iPod device another way...
The impressionism exhibit was wonderful. I'm just crazy about "Flowers in a Crystal Vase" now, and one of boats at Argenteuil whose name I can't remember and which Google isn't bringing me amongst all the others. I love watching the strokes, for which the latter was very interesting as some of the reflections were painted beneath the water, and others above. And "Flowers" offered some very neat insight into brush-loading, with beautiful gradients within individual strokes. Lovely, lovely works all around.
And I did get my shaving set. Very excited to give my brush and shaving procedure a try tomorrow - though I still need to get into the straight razor part of things. Also some lovely chocolates, of course, and a trip to a very old, well-established, simple family-style Italian restaurant. Good pizza, delicious crabmeat on excellent spinach fettucine, a perfect marinara sauce on spaghetti and ravioli with lovely meatballs, and a good veal parmigiana were at our table. I'll enjoy going back there for good, homestyle Italian food at fair prices ($25/person) - and buying a jar of that splendid marinara. Oh, also fun is the lack of reservations, with the interaction of waving down what seems to be the owner to get your name on the list, convincing him that you can try and wait for one of those last few tables of the night in hopes someone ahead of you drops out. Funtimes!
I forgot to mention last time that I've been falling hard for yodeling, practicing every night at work for the last week, maybe two now. I'm actually somewhat proud of the progress I've made - now the only embarrassment I have over it is the actual yodeling part rather than my performance. I guess I'm a natural? And I can't seem to get enough of Franzl Lang's amazingvoice...

@Kank: I'd probably do what you did, except get a cheaper model (like refurbished) and use the rest to buy myself music for said players.
@Zith: You, my good sir, have some weird hobbies. Impressionism is beautiful through and through, however. It's just so...vibrant? I don't know if that's right...I love the focus on light and color. They've always been very moving to me. It's like a very controlled abstractism in the fact that it's a focus on the feeling more than accurate representation of subject matter.
@Other things: BLAH HOMEWORK BLAH! I've ended up dropping my Turkish class. Two of my required courses are dropping me over 6+ hours of homework each week. Not good for our intrepid hero.
Speaking of intrepid heroes....those of you who enjoy videogames (specifically Roleplaying ones), Go pick up Deathspank on either PSN or XBLA. The game is HILARIOUS. It's like Secret of Monkey Island meets Diablo. It's absolutely fan-freaking-tastic.

Deathspank, eh?
I've been spending my gaming time lately on Red Dead Redemption that I borrowed from a coworker. I've pretty much won the game, I think, but there's still missions and it says I'm at about 75% completion. I've killed all of the bad guys in the game but haven't gotten an end credits sequence yet or anything.

Very much that last bit. I feel that, particularly in the modern age of easy photography, most of the visual arts should focus on bringing us more than just the actuality of the thing. Certain exceptions apply, like portraits and, of course, photography, and I recognize that it's very difficult to capture a thing as it is with a brush, but there's so much that can be... portrayed? presented?... in these media.
I also love seeing the motions, techniques and such of the artist, and when a canvas has a texture put on it, so the more classical methods with the idea of hiding all of that away can be a little boring for me.

My ears are still ringing from the concert I attended last night.
Here was the lineup:
Airbourne
Hellyeah
Halestorm
Stone Sour
Avenged Sevenfold
Disturbed
Unfortunately, the Avenged Sevenfold set was so unrealistically loud, especially the vocals mix, that you couldn't even make sense of it. It was one of the loudest sets that I can remember in recent history (last decade). One of the few times where I regretted not having ear plugs.
I think my favorite sets of the day were Airbourne (I was so close to the stage for this one, I was even on the edge of the mosh pit and almost got knocked over a couple of times) and Halestorm. The drummer for Halestorm was surprisingly good, so this was definitely a concert for drummers when you throw in Vinnie Paul (Hellyeah/Pantera) and Mike Portnoy (Avenged Sevenfold/Dream Theater) into the mix.
@Zith: You know, I figure you and I might have very similar tastes in art. I do agree that nowadays, since it has become quite a bit easier to produce photo-realistic results, some of the more amazing artists use their style to their advantage. Frankly, in this age of digital art, having style becomes even more important. I especially feel strongly about the path Magic Art has taken recently along this route! There's very few artists who have STRONG style markers of their own and just don't blend into the background.
@Kank: Who doesn't love a good concert! Frankly, I'm more of a local concert goer. I've been to a couple of big shows and I always feel like they're soooo dang expensive for what you get! If I can, I try and hit something like Warped Tour or Ozzfest if they swing by local. One payment entry and lots of great music.
Also, @Kank: Why would you shave beavers? I thought beavers as pets were more of a Canadian thing....
Edit: (To the tune of this.) IT'S PRE-RELEASE TOURNEY TIME! IT'S PRE-RELEASE TOURNEY TIME!!! WHEYAAT? WHEYAAT?
I know in the 70's and 80's people were really proud of how furry their beavers could get, but they need to get with the times. A well-shaved beaver is a good thing. It's much easier to keep them clean, they're much smoother to pet, and if it's a beaver that likes to travel, they'll no longer have to worry about lice. Sure they may get chilly in cold winter weather, just keep them warm and occupied and they'll stay happy.
I especially feel strongly about the path Magic Art has taken recently along this route! There's very few artists who have STRONG style markers of their own and just don't blend into the background.
It's been an interesting conversation with my friends. One really dislikes Ron Spencer's cards, which I feel have quite a lot of merit. Or maybe had; looking through it now, much of it since Masques block or so has less of the feel I like in a Magic card. For reference, Jeff A Menges holds all of my nostalgia-fest in Magic. Seeing a Hail Storm at the prerelease made my day - that and the shooting star on my foil Gemstone Mine.
Who doesn't love a good concert!
I acknowledge that it's weird, but I actually don't. First was Huey Lewis and the News, most recent was Michael Bublé, and I really can't get into them. But I do like plays, isn't that odd? I'll have to try the symphony at some point. Maybe it's just the other people there?
Edit: (To the tune of this.) IT'S PRE-RELEASE TOURNEY TIME! IT'S PRE-RELEASE TOURNEY TIME!!! WHEYAAT? WHEYAAT?
Oh dear, it's been some time since I thought of that song.
I'm actually tempted to attend the release event. I haven't liked a set since Time Spiral block, and this one still irks me in some ways - infect containing wither is the biggest for me - but I've wanted poison back for as long as I can remember. I still put Marsh Viper and Swamp Mosquito in decks for no good reason.

What have the ImageCrafters+ peeps been up to? This is the twelfth post this month between three clan members. We need to light some fires!
Anybody planning anything awesome for Halloween? I want to get an evil warlock costume with a black ornate hooded robe, but all of the ones I can find are:
A) Too crappy
B) Too small
C) Too expensive
What's a large evil wizard to do?
Holidays are hectic enough for me, so I've decided to skip most of the celebrating that can be done. Never get into pastry cheffing if you like the holidays (and are lazy).
It sounds to me if you need all of those, you'll have to resort to sewing up your own. I understand that it shouldn't be terribly difficult for that sort of garment, but I've never tried sewing since that half of my Home Ec class ten years ago.
Decided to go for the release event, and in my sealed pool was a Sword of Body and Mind and Auriok Edgewright, so the rest kinda fell into place from there for me to go 2-1. Someone opened a pack with a foil Elspeth alongside a Koth, that was pretty disgusting.

@Kank: I think that Zith's hit it right on the head. If you can't find it, make it. Go hit the local Thrift Store for cheap clothes you can adjust. You never know what you can find. Take one of the too crappy ones and add on it to it make it better. There's so much you can do.
@Beavers: Wow, Kank, you must have a lot of time handling Beavers. I'm pretty sure you must have one of your own that you take care of on a regular basis.
@Zith: Yeah, I love how the overall quality of the art has gotten better, but there's so few stellar, stylistic artists now in Magic. I actually was having an interesting discussion with my friend about this yesterday. He feels that the similarity has made it easier to recognize what set a card is from because the styles are so similar. He enjoys it versus the difference in individual artists' styles.
@Halloween: Well, I've got Boo at the Zoo (trick or treating and a zoo walk for free) for my 2 year old. And then I'm running a 2 Headed Giant Sealed Deck, with a Murder Mystery involved. Then a Game Day. Then, I think, we're holding a party at my place, playing the latest incarnation of Betrayal at the House on the Hill.
@Release: Sounds like you had a blast, Zith. Mine was crazy good, other than my son breaking the store's computer's disc drive. My pre-releases were full and I had to turn lots of good people away, sadly. I changed over to running at a single store and only had room for a (cramped) 18 people. Which is okay, we only had that much product anyway.

Hey, Kank, didya ever hear back on your costume? It would be really cool if ya did. You'll totally have to show us pictures if you make it work. Me, for Halloween, I'm gonna be dressing up as Clark Kent. Yeah, simple, but I've got a really cool Superman T-shirt that'll be underneath it all. A few pieces of Velcro on a white button up and a black tie, and I'm the Boy Wonder.
In other news, I carved pumpkins! Zombie anyone? It's feeling a little bit more like Halloween around my house. Anyone else carve anything cool? My wife did Liliana Vess.
As for what I've done with with my little digital toy, I can't honestly show you. It'd violate the terms of service. I've been practicing drawing the human form, mostly in the naked form of my wife. She's been a gracious model for me, but it's not any pictures that'll be making the rounds of the Internet anytime soon.

My costume is in transit right now, with a planned delivery of tomorrow.
I had it special made to fit my specs, so I'm crossing my fingers hoping that it's just what I've been looking for (because I can't send it back unless it's defective).
C'mon UPS....
Oh dear, it's been a while since I checked in around here. Another of those mind slips; work's getting weirder these days. That, and I've spent a lot of time with Ghost in the Shell, and then reading a fair stack of books from the library. Enjoyed checking out A Clockwork Orange and The Art of Happiness at the same time, now looking for something that'd oddly match In Cold Blood for when I return these.
So that's where all my time's gone... oh, that and watching Koreans play Starcraft 2. And anticipating the Michelin guide release that just happened oh my goodness!
Neat pumpkins, Alden! I wish I had the patience for that sort of thing. And wow, I really do have no sense of time: just thought "won't those spoil before Halloween?" but I guess not. Crazy. How long did that very cool Liliana Vess carving take? Overall thoughts on the new digital toy?
I agree that we'll need to see pictures of this custom job should it work out, Kank.

Success! The robes are a perfect fit! I'll certainly get photos on Friday, because that's the day we have the costume contest here at work. I'll be going all out with makeup and prosthetics!
I've been spending most of my free time lately playing Fallout: New Vegas. I have but haven't even opened Rock Band 3 and Fable III yet.
Permanent absentee over here, voted some time ago. Agreed on 19, Kank, though it won't change anything for me.
My mind keeps jumping to this comic for no real reason. Something about it is just so perfectly right. Every few hours I get a bit of the dialogue in my head and laugh again.
Also, hooray for getting work matters settled. But less hooray for it meaning that I'll be working afternoon shifts instead of the overnight shifts I've been doing for two and a half years.

I think they might've died. I know Pete started college and Kris started working at the mall. I can't believe that's completely eaten up _all_ their free time. I've had a pretty hellacious schedule with testing and everything, but I've still made it this far and posted decently frequently.

I've been spending most of my free time lately playing Fallout: New Vegas. I have but haven't even opened Rock Band 3 and Fable III yet.

Go Prop 19 Go!
@Work stuff: Huzzah! Shift changes Not Huzzah!
@Prop 19: I'm not going to open that can of worms. However, I will say, someday, it _will_ be legal. Get over it.

Also.....AVATAR! My first one. Gawd, you'd think that having been on the site for over 5 years I would've made myself one by now...but I haven't. So, the first piece of work that I can show on the site out of my new Photoshop. Looks nice, I think.
