Hey, as I said in a previous thread I'm going to be buying a few decks in the upcoming weeks and don't want to spend more than $20 per deck and no singles that cost more than $1. I've already built a Lorescale Coatl budget deck and am now looking for budget cards or budget themes that can be "centerpieces" of a deck.
My playing style is the following: I play aggro and control about equally and every once in a while I will play a soft combo deck. Also I am more of a defensive player than most people, example: I usually use more removal than most people do. Finally, I hate infinite combo and burn and really really really hate tribal.
I like it immensely because depending on how the game flows, I can play it very aggro, it also has good control elements + some neat combos with Mishra's ability.
To make it more budget, you can take out Glimmervoids for Mirrodin's Core, Dark Confidant for something like Moriok Replica (it may even be better.. I have yet to test it).
Sensei's Divining Top are going to be tough to find a replacement for since it combos so well with Mishra... Crystall Ball? or maybe try something like Faerie Machinist?

For the rest of your decks, Epic struggle and walls? I guess you want the deckbuilding itself to be an epic struggle as well lol...
Primary and only casual rule: "any rule that is fine for the most part of the playgroup, is a fine rule". So any further thread with: "if somebody uses/does .... in a casual game, is it ethical/ok?", read the answer above.
- Being a "Johnny/Spike" means you like self-torture. You win often in casual, so everybody hates you; you loose often in competitive, so you hate yourself.
Hmmm, you've been here for a while, so you've probably already built or played these already, but these come to mind:
1: Probably a safe bet. Mono U pauper control, perhaps. Counterspells are right at the $1 level.
2. Yeah, I've been wanting to use Defiler for a while. Maybe UBR control aggro with the ~blades? Grixis Grimblade and the others. Hybrid red/black critters work too.
3. You can build UG madness for fairly cheap. Might even be a peasant or pauper build.
4. Not familar with Mishra decks. Arcum Dagsson might be a fun build around me budget centerpiece.
5. Look up "Crystal Witness." Eternal Witness is probably double your single limit, but it's a worthwhile acciqusition.
6. Tons of cheap suicide black ideas, but in centerpiece style? Hmmm... Hirobi, Death Wail might be interesting to put at the top of your curve for a suicide build. Add black pump spells to pump your critters for damage, then after Hirobi lands your pump spells become kill spells. You can use the "Skulking" critters as they work for suicide black (big and cheap.)
Great synergy with epochrasite and Mishra, additional copies of epochrasite come as 4/4s. Epochrasite that die will trigger Mishra after the suspend time. Trinket mage is cool, allowing you to fetch removal (multiplied by Mishra) or solutions to pw or activated abilities. Etched champion + cranial plating is game winner. Glaze fiend is great with artifact lands and is triggered by extra artifacts fetched with Mishra. Coldsteel heart fixes mana and allows a turn 3 Mishra. Master of etherium is just a beast with all the artifacts. I would play tezzeret, agent of bolas but he's too expansive for my budget.
Yeah, I think I wasn't clear on what I was looking for. I wasn't looking for help with the cards that I listed, I just listed those as examples of cards I have thought of. What I am looking for is budget cards that you can build around that can be the "centerpiece" of a deck other than the ones I listed.

pity you hate going infinite... the Life combo is really cheap to build. a 40 card version is buildable on $10. I don't see it topping $20 when you're just fleshing it out to 60
