Here are a bunch of commons and uncommons from my custom set. No cycles implied (though maybe some wider thematic hints):
Reckless AlchemistR
Creature - Human Rogue [COM]
When an artifact enters the battlefield, its controller sacrifices it and you sacrifice Reckless Alchemist.
[1/1]
Chiseled StrengthG
Instant [COM]
Target creature gets +2/+2 until end of turn. If it's an artifact creature, it gets +4/+4 until end of turn instead.
Taunting Brawler1RG
Creature - Human Warrior [COM]
All creatures able to block Taunting Brawler do so.
Taunting Brawler can't be equipped.
[2/3]
Prism-Shell Mantis3GU
Creature - Insect [COM]
:1mana:: Prism-Shell Mantis becomes a colorless artifact creature until end of turn.
:1mana:: Prism-Shell Mantis becomes the color or colors of your choice until end of turn.
[6/1]
Barzakh Prowler2UU
Creature - Djinn [UNC]
Flying
Prevent all damage that would be dealt to Barzakh Prowler by equipped creatures.
[3/3]
Searing StonesRR
Sorcery [UNC]
Target player reveals his or her hand. For each artifact card revealed this way, that player discards that card unless he or she has Searing Stones deal 2 damage to him or her.
I'm interested in what you think about any / all of them.
Reckless Alchemist = Was thinking this could have haste as well, but it's probably good enough within the context of your set.
Chiseled Strength = Might be a little overpowered if there are good artifact creature one drops... Instead of +4/+4 for artifact creatures, could it give them two +1/+1 counters? I think that would have even better flavor.
Taunting Brawler = Nice! I love the "can't equip" ability on this guy.
Prism-Shell and Barzakh = Great! I can picture the Barzakh laughing as someone's weapons pass harmlessly through him. :3
Searing Stones = Could use a better name/flavor, but the effect is very nice.

I was really struggling with the name here! Since I can't call it "Hot Potato", I'm just looking to capture that idea through the name somehow, but it's not easy (art would help). The idea being that I'm heating up the artifact spells in your hand and you've got to pitch them lest they burn you.
I just had an idea about Barzakh Prowler (this guy's been sitting in my design file for weeks, so it's funny that I just had the idea now): so here's version two. Tell me if it's better, or worse:
Barzakh Prowler2UU
Creature - Djinn [UNC]
Flying
Prevent all combat damage that would be dealt to Barzakh Prowler by artifact creatures and/or equipped creatures.
[3/3]
So, I made it only apply to combat damage, but also to artifact creatures.

Ah, I see now. That's neat. How about call it "Too Hot to Handle"? :3
New Barzakh Prowler = I like that, too, though it's starting to sound a lot more green than blue.
New Barzakh Prowler = I like that, too, though it's starting to sound a lot more green than blue.
I see your point here. This isn't a critical card (except in that it's a midrange, beefy blue flier, which I need), so I'm not going to bother bending the color pie over it. I think I'll keep it as it is (first version).
@Gwar_The_Trolle: I'm not sure how your new wording fixes that problem. I can still bounce the Alchemist in response to the ability going on the stack, and the ability will still make my opponent sacrifice an artifact. Wording it as:
"When an artifact enters the battlefield, sacrifice Reckless Alchemist. If you do, that artifact's controller sacrifices it."
Alchemist: Love it (necessary wording tweaks aside). My favorite interaction so far? Using your opponent's Alchemist to turn on your off-color Potions.
Chiseled Strength: Sure. +1/+1 over Giant Growth usually isn't backbreaking anyway.
Taunting Brawler: It fills a hole but it's not really exciting me.
Barzakh Prowler: It seems odd for an evasive flier to have a primarily combat-related ability, and it's not exactly like I'm going to bother pinging him with Viridian Longbow. I could envision this ability plus Taunting Brawler's second ability on some kind of "anti-magnetic beast."
Searing Stones: A discard spell in the set with no black that makes flavor sense and also pleases fans of Browbeat? Nicely done.
Even Deadly Insect's little bro is pretty ancient.
Anyway, the nice thing about 6/1 being unblue is that it's also green. Green can do 6/1, even if it normally doesn't.
That said, I could easily change the P/T. Suggestions?
In the end, these things are going to fluctuate based on Limited pressures, but I'd be interested to know what your P/T of choice would be for this cost and these abilities.
Actually, the real "little bro" of a Deadly Insect would, of course, be a Deadly Grub. Mantises usually have higher toughness than power, but with only a few examples there's not much to base on.
Taunting Brawler1RG
Creature - Human Warrior [COM]
All creatures able to block Taunting Brawler do so.
Taunting Brawler can't be equipped.
[2/3]
Seems a little bit uninteresting to me. Although Lure effects are usually on small creatures, it seems strange that you'd make this card green/red. I can see it being printed, but it's not something that interests me.
Prism-Shell Mantis3GU
Creature - Insect [COM]
:1mana:: Prism-Shell Mantis becomes a colorless artifact creature until end of turn.
:1mana:: Prism-Shell Mantis becomes the color or colors of your choice until end of turn.
[6/1]
This really depends on the set. I think I'd like it as a 4/4 instead of as a fragile 6/1. It's potentially an amazing card and potentially a useless card depending on the format. That's not bad design.
Searing StonesRR
Sorcery [UNC]
Target player reveals his or her hand. For each artifact card revealed this way, that player discards that card unless he or she has Searing Stones deal 2 damage to him or her.
I'd cost at RB but either way, this is a wonderful punisher card.

Chiseled Strength: Sure. +1/+1 over Giant Growth usually isn't backbreaking anyway.

Prism-Shell Mantis: So you mean to imply that this is actually supposed to be a red card?

Actually it's a riff on another green card.
I was originally just going to print a :symg:/:symu: Mantis variant with cloak/trollshroud, but then I decided that would be a better fit on this guy.
Anyway, glad that these are clicking.
I will, of course, consider revisions on the suggested cards. Thanks!
Wow, that card is ancient. Having such a lopsided cost/toughness ratio just feels very unblue.

Creature - Human Artificer [COM]
When an artifact enters the battlefield, sacrifice Reckless Alchemist. If you do, destroy that artifact.
[1/1]
Creature - Djinn [UNC]
Flying
Prevent all combat damage that would be dealt to Vaporous Enforcer by equipped creatures.
[3/3]
This is okay. It's an amusing parallel with Electrostatic Bolt. Seems a little bit uninteresting to me. Although Lure effects are usually on small creatures, it seems strange that you'd make this card green/red. I can see it being printed, but it's not something that interests me.
