Yeah, sorry for the confusion. I have been testing my Pauper creations against the Sligh deck, because it has been the strongest perfomer so far. It's quick, cares little about what the opponent is doing, and has reach.
Alfred's MBC looks good, though. I haven't tested it yet, but the life gain of black (Drain Life, etc.) might be the answer to the quick burn of red.
Are you testing the matchup yourself or with someone else?
While testing the Ninja deck, I was piloting both decks. The Sligh deck requires little thought to play, so it lends itself to simple testing. I have tested other decks with other players before, but nothing in the past week.
@Eegag: You oughtta log onto AIM, i can play you some games.
I'd love to play some real matches, but I am swamped until Thursday. I shouldn't even be playing solitaire ... but I couldn't stand the monotony . However, I think we really should organize a tournament for this weekend, or sometime early next week, as a "test run" for the format. It would at least give us a good idea of the decks to test against, instead of just shooting in thd dark.
In time, I feel like the clan could organize a sort of "Pauper Tour," forming a season with weekly or bi-weekly torunaments that culminate with a Pauper "Worlds" (just as was written about in the Into the AEther column a year or two ago).
These ideas are great! Of course, I think we're still in the early stages of everything and I feel that a bit of casual playing between clan members might be more viable right now. However, once we've established ourselves as a solid presence here (at MTGS), I could definitely see having a nice big Pauper tourney on MWS or something. I think people would love it, and we'd probably turn a lot of new folks on to the world of pure commons. It's quite fun.
Wicked Akuba seems like more of an aggro creature than a control creature to me. Sure it comes down turn 2, but it can't become huge to kill other creatures like Stalker can, it also dies to your own Justices, which sucks. I've also found that Ghastly Demise = Teh suck. Sure it costs 1, but without fetchlands, and the fact that it can't hit black creatures means that it's actually pretty narrow.
I'm actually going to go with more sacrifice oriented removal, by adding Cruel Edict in that spot. It only comes down one turn later, but it gets around the black creature problem, untargetability, Pro: Black, etc. I think that it's a good replacement.
I just play through on MWS with my friends (we don't use the who stages thing). Do you guys play like Leets and use all the steps and whatnot? If you do, maybe I should play with one of you a few times and learn how to play through it all quickly.

I wish we could play with Cruel Edict, but it just got reprinted as an uncommon in 9th :frown:.
MasterBeeble: No, I don't use the stages, everyone I play with understands the game enough to be able to follow what's going on. The only time I declare is when playing spells at the end of my opponent's turn.
Well, as long as you play the Portal versions, you should be alright. If you can't get your hands on those, just play Demise. It isn't THAT bed actually.
Sorry about the Akuba suggestion; I completely forgot you're running Justice.
I hate the steps in MWS. There's a chat option, just explain your moves. Otherwise you're clicking and ctrl-spacing and it's annoying. But that's just me.
can i join the Princes of Pauper? i always thought that Peasant was the format with all commons, but now i understand that it's Pauper, which means i've had a pauper deck for such a long time!!!
i've had this deck ever since the Onslaught block (with minor changes of course, i used to run Drain Life and Dark Banishing instead of Consume Spirit and Rend Flesh, respectively :p). i just posted this here just in case you wanted to know if i'm familiar with Pauper decks :).
o, and on another note, while trying to find how quickly this can kill someone (with life-loss), i found that this can win on turn 3!!! (who knew pauper decks can be so good :)). even though it requires a lot of luck (you also have to be second), it's possible (and what's funny, i built this deck because i LOVED the fact that nothing can prevent life-loss, not because it can win on turn 3 :p).
Turn 1-
swamp, dark ritual, maggot carrier, shepherd of rot. Opponent-19, You-19
Turn 2-
swamp, shepherd of rot, attack w/ carrier and activate shepherd. Opponent-15, You-16
Sorry about the Akuba suggestion; I completely forgot you're running Justice.

Yeah, the steps are annoying. So, short answer is no, we do not play like Leets :tongue3:.
As for Alfred's deck, he is already running Diabolic Edict, and playing with eight in his deck probably isn't a good idea.
I am curious, what is our official stance when dealing with rarity? Is it the rarity of each card version (so, I could play with a Visions Man-o'-War but not a Portal Man-o'-War) or the most common rarity wins (I could play with any Man-o'-War, because it was once a common) or the rarest rarity wins (I couldn't play with any Man-o'-Wars because it was once an uncommon)?

Okay, obviously I didn't look at Alfred's build at all...
The official stance, as far as I know, is that the card is as rare as the most recent printing. Since Man-o'-War was uncommon in its most recent printing, it is considered uncommon (the idea being, I think, that Wizards has "fixed" the card and put it in its appropriate rarity).
Therefore, Man-o'-War is out... unless Portals came before Visions, which I don't think is true.

Yeah, that's understandable. It takes out some fun cards that I wanted to use though, like Pestilence. Ah well!
Speaking of Pestilence and Evincar's Justice, I would like to compile a list of all the mass destruction effects available to pauper mages. How do we go about sweeping a board full of weenies? Please, give me some cards and I'll add them to the list!
Pauper Board Sweepers
CMC of 1: Tremor (R - 1 damage to each creature without flying) Krark-Clan Shaman (R - 1 damage to each creature without flying for each artifact sacrificed)
CMC of 2: Bloodfire Dwarf (R, R and sacrifice - 1 damage to each creature without flying) Rain of Embers (1R - 1 damage to each creature and each player) Dry Spell (1B - 1 damage to each creature and each player) Nausea (1B - All creatures get -1/-1 until end of turn)
CMC of 3: Gangrenous Zombies (1BB, and sacrifice - 1 damage to each creature and player, 2 damage if you control a snow-covered swamp) Squall (2G - 2 damage to each creature with flying) Death's-Head Buzzard (1BB - Each creature gets -1/-1 until end of turn when Death's-Head Buzzard is put into a graveyard from play) Holy Light (1WW - All non-white creatures get -1/-1 until end of turn) Wail of the Nim (2B - 1 damage to each creature and each player)
CMC of 4: Evincar's Justice (2BB - 2 damage to each creature and player) Bloodfire Infusion (2R, R, sacrifice enchanted creature - X damage to each creature, where X is sacrificed creature's power) Swirling Sandstorm (3R, threshold - 5 damage to each creature without flying)
CMC of 5: Lava Storm (3RR - 2 damage to each blocking or each attacking creature)
Potential Additons to the List if the ruling becomes "once a common, always a common"
CMC of x: Pestilence (2BB - 1 damage to each creature and player per B paid) Crypt Rats (2B - X damage to each creature and player)

I would like you to post more than one sentence in our thread first, please.
And that looks like it's pretty much it. They all seem to take out creatures that have 1 toughness, with the exception of Crypt Rats, Bloodfire Infusion, Swirling Sandstorm, Gangrenous Zombies and Krark-Clan Shaman (if you have enough artifacts). Of the bunch, Crypt Rats looks like its the most promising, and could be a good removal option in a UB control deck, possibly.
Swirling Sandstorm looks like it could be a good addition to mono red decks looking for some sort of solid sweeper.

I think that if you have actual paper versions of the cards, you should be able to use those, regardless as to whether or not they were reprinted as uncommon. Otherwise, those commons that would have been so good, are now completely worthless.

I agree, it adds a little more variety. But, it's up to Polyjak! I'll play either way .
I hate to break it to you guys, but I'm not the grand arbiter who gets to decide the rules of the Pauper format. (At least, I don't think so.) For my source I'm using this article: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=mtgcom/daily/jm67
"That's right: In Pauper Magic, you can build any sixty-card deck you want... provided you only use commons. For Magic Online, the accepted rules of Pauper are that all commons are legal (except, sometimes, Cranial Plating... more on this in a bit). Uncommons that have online common equivalents, like the Circles of Protection, Chromatic Sphere, and Stream of Life, are legal. Uncommons that have common equivalents before Invasion, however, are illegal."
I learned something just now. Ha! Any card that has been common at any point during or after Invasion is legal, even if it was later reprinted as uncommon (or, Heaven forbid, rare). However, pre-Invasion, the rule is different... we have to base legality off the most recent printing of the card.
Therefore, quoth grozathia (who is standing just to my right as I type this), Nantuko Husk is legal for Pauper because he has a common printing in Onslaught. How exciting!
I will post this ruling on the first post, which will serve as our reference post. I'll also link all the lists we make (common card drawing, the common boardwipe you guys are working on, etc...) from that thread. It'll be a Library of Pauper!
As far as Paper Pauper goes, I'm not sure that format is fully fleshed out. Things get tricky because cards used to be printed without their rarity readily apparent. Gatherer is useful, naturally. There's some room for exploration, but I think if we stick with judging legality based on the most recent rarity, that gives us a concrete starting point. That is, of course, up for debate, and I would love to hear everyone's thoughts on this issue, as it is fundamental to our clan and the format itself.
Well, Peel is a good card that would open up a way for your Ninjas. I think you could play either, but I like the flexibility of Unsummon. Like, if your opponent only has 1 creature out, it can open the way for other creatures of yours and not have to worry about bouncing one of your own. It's really conditional and I think it depends on the player, and the style of magic that player plays, on which to run.
I kinda like the idea of being able to use any card that was printed common at some time or another. I'm unsure, but leaning towards the "use any card that was printed common at some time" side. I think it fits the flavor of the clan more.
