Sooo.... its been a while since I've posted something that I was commissioned for. Long story short, someone here decided to commission me for a card. And this is the result. The layering on her face damn near made me go insane. LOTS of small pieces, 13 in all on her head methinks. Fun times... *runs off to destroy cards with paint*
First ever attempt at 3Ding a card! Got too many damned promo Naya Sojourners, and had nothing better to do with them (promo Syphon Minds, you're next!)
Need better glue, and just brought a new knife today, so hopefully the job will be a lot cleaner next time
Yeah, that Wort was my first non-life counter ever made (not taking into consideration anything I made early on). Was a lot of fun and a bit of a challenge. Now that my paints are out, I might work on finishing my barony vampire insert. Also, I'm looking for pack inserts (Pre-SoM methinks) that have the sunblast angel art on them. If you have 'em let me know. I'm enjoying all the new faces adding to the talent pool, keep it up guys/gals.
@Necropsy: I've been eye-ballin my Bloodthrones for a while. Seeing yours makes me wanna pull mine out (have a few foils to toss in the mix on it). But Wort damn near drove me insane soooo... yeah. Maybe later sometime.
@Eggit: yeah... face = me insane.... there are sooo many little parts on her face (~13 total) that ... yeah..... thnx tho
There, glued and touched up Bloodthrone Vampire
Added another layer or two, and brought the face out more. Went over white spots in black pen. I think I'mma send this off to Steve Argyle to get signed, just 'cause I love his art
I posted a few pages back asking about a SoA mountain, and somewhat to my own surprise, I actually went through with it and made it, as well as another SoA island.
Used an X-acto knife blade #11, one Pitt artist pen Black #199, one Elmer's extra strength glue stick, 4 basting needles, 40 beads, and 25 of each land card in question (as far as I can tell it's quite possible to use less than that, but this was the easiest for me and I had a ton of the lands).
if only xacto knives were sold this side of the ocean :S

can someone give me a total list of items i will need to start doing these. i know xacto knives. but what type of glue. paint pen? anything at all i will need ANYTHING and EVERYTHING.
I know this isn't the tutorial thread but I thought I would post this here as its some fairly good info. Also, AGO... Those Blasts are awesome. I especially like the Blue one. The beads just do it for that one. The only thing that bugs me on them is that, while it is an abacus-style counter, when would you ever need to track 10,000+ life? That and the beads make it so you can't see the awesome shiney foil deep in there. Otherwise, great pieces.
I started with a Sharpie marker, some random craft glue, and lots of x-acto #11 blades.
Currently I have:
2x Dritz Dura-Heal Self healing mats (18x24)
1x 5" Metal straight edge (ruler)
2x X-acto handles with x-acto branded blades (softer metal, sharper blade - good for all the seen detail work but the tips break easily)
1x X-acto handle with off brand blades (harder metal, duller blade - good for unseen cuts and long straight cuts and tips last longer)
1x Bottle of "Craft Glue". I am still using the same bottle that I got when I started. It has no brand but from looking at the bottle I believe it is Elmer's Craft Glue. Its thicker than normal elmers glue and a LOT tackier.
1x Set of 8 Pigma Brush markers with a spare black marker
1x Sharpie felt tip marker. I use this for the outer edge coloring as it bleeds into the cardboard.
1x giant pile of heavy stuff. To make sure the cards dry flat I tend to pile about 4-5 FULL card boxes (500-1000 cards in each) and leave them for a half hour or so and then overnight when its all complete.
To make a life counter I use the following:
2x Dritz Needles. I don't know the exact model number but they come in packs of 5 or 6 (all the same size) at JoAnn's and I tend to get ALL of them whenever I swing in. They aren't on thier website (JoAnn's or Dritz's). They are roughly .5-.75 inch larger than the width of the card textbox. I trim them down to size. Image of the packaging here.
15-20x Beads. They have to have a hole bigger than 1mm to fit on the needle. For rows of 10 beads, I try to use beads that are a max 3mm wide. For rows of less beads I just play with a bead pattern I like and run with it.
I make 3D magic cards. This involves taking 5-10 copies of a card, cutting them up, and layering them to give a 3D effect. This thread will be where I put my work and answer any questions you might have about 3D cards. I might do some mini-tutorials on cutting, coloring, and layering techniques in the future.
There are a lot of examples of other 3D artists in this thread. Shazaam writes a column on 3D cards for GatheringMagic.com. You can see all his articles here. There's a long tutorial thread here. My favorite 3D artist is Seshiro Ookubo (how can he not be?), but I also like many of the frequent posters on the thread linked above.
Please PM me if you are interested in a commission!
Enjoy!

YOU CUT UP 4 DARK RITUALS! It pains my card collecting heart.
However this are very cool! good job
Hopefully only the top one is a beta ritual, as the picture is the same from revised/unlimited.
Pretty sweet cards, I never have the patience to go back in ink in the white edges and make the cards look nice. After seeing yours, I might have to go and give that a try.

I think inking the edges is important in making the card look good, but making clean cuts is probably a more useful in the long run...Inking is mostly just picking the right color palette.
Working on a few new cards, will post them up when they're done. Brutalizer Exarch is currently on the chopping block.
Instead of doing a walkthrough tutorial like I usually do, my article this week is a Top 10 Tips for 3D alteration. I'm really interested to get the thoughts of other 3D alterers. Do you agree/disagree with my list? What tips do you have that I didn't think of?

Kind of messed up the coloring on some of the layers (didn't realize another color would look better), but all in all happy with how it came out.
Also, anyone going to PT Philly this weekend?
