Jeff what about SCG's? A week or so ago they had a banner stating that they were running low on INS and that is why they were raising the prices to $99. Now they are sold out, I know this is the second day they are sold out of product. Now sure how long it takes to get product from WoTC but it's been about a week or maybe more since they knew they were running low on product.
*edit* Obviously I am not asking you about SCG since you don't work for them, but your take on the situation, maybe INS will be in short supply until the second print run.
I think what the issue is, is places that pre-sell boxes, especially places that pre-sell at significantly below msrp (what you often find online) when you have a good and popular set. Given that they can get them straight from wizards, its hard to say for sure to be honest. I havent heard anything about wizards being out of boxes, but then it hasnt really come up in coversation anywhere that Ive been aware of. I imagine that the turnaround time to place and order and receive it, especially this time of year could be as little as a few days (depending upon location), or it could be as long as a week. The key is whether wizards is currently sold out or not. If they are, then we're in for a bit of a situation. Most likely though, as I said, its just that SCG sold a TON of pre-orders, and what they had left sold quickly at their usual good prices, and now they are just waiting for a large enough restock to justify selling more online (versus having product available for events at their shop/otherwise locations, and the like). You would have to ask Ben specifically for more insight, but thats my guess anyway.
I know for our shop specifically we dont deeply discount our boxes in presales or otherwise, and while we have sold a lot of innistrad thus far (both singles and packs/boxes/fat packs), our supply is still fine. If we sold our boxes at $90 or less per box, we would have been sold out ages ago as well :p. Also the other side is how many boxes they had to open to cover all their singles demand as well, since, as we saw, they were selling out on more than a couple singles from the set, and this certainly would be a bad time to not have some of the cards available for people to buy (being right before states and all), so they may very well have pulled some to give themselves additional stock that way as well (just another thought).
Personally Im not worried (yet), but we'll see how it goes. If wizards does tell people that they are sold out, then I'd worry.
EDIT: @Kirbar: I plan to finally get to that tonight. Gotta get Innistrad and the rest of standard updated so I can get these darned auctions listed, new set releases dont pay for themselves (immediately), getting time to work on that (or stuff here) has been quite the juggling act, with how busy the shop has been this last week: Rotation + New Magic Set + States + Hype + New Hot Decks = One Tired Magic Seller :p.
Scg also ran the 5k in indy just after launch. Who knows how much they sold in packs, boxes, drafts etc. + online sales, and prize support for the events. A large chunk of this probably came out of their initial order I'd imagine.
Because conservative bias is a far, far worse thing. Liberal bias doesn't, statistically speaking, make people stupid. Conservative bias (or at least Fox's version of it) does.
I'm inclined to call shenanigans on scg. Wizards has had no problem keeping my local store in stock (and it's the only store in one of the biggest cities in the UK).
I reckon scg are just using the excuse of low stock to put up prices, which in turn causes people to panic buy because they want to get in before prices go up even further.
i have two large stores near me and both are completely out of innistrad stock (booster boxes/packs and fat packs). i know one of the stores is getting more in stock today after being sold out since sunday. not sure on the other store.
Champion of the Perish has started to jump slightly now... will this madness never stop!!!!!????
I've never seen a set adjust for the positive this way a week after release. It's nutty.
Agreed 100% on that. Not that Im complaining mind you <.< .... But between now and states we're likely to see more movement on anything that could see a strong showing, and then likely general settling from there.
Most singles buyers are used to cards peaking before release and then beginning to drop, this set has some of my customers a bit irritated at the continual price increases. It is what it is though.
Well I'm happy for the shops really... makes it worth it to draft, play sealed, buy boxes, etc... but for every one of these sets, you have plenty of stinkers.

(Key: The card's most recent move is the rightmost one. This indicates the hottest mover of the update. indicates no movement. is a card that wasn't on the list last update. The data is taken from here.)
The list has grown to 33 cards (as I'm tracking anything over the price I pay for a pack, which is $2.50).
Liliana gets her own paragraph. After pushing up to $40 in the first few days of release, playtesting and deck-inclusion continued to rise, so her price went to $60 almost overnight. As Jeff and others have mentioned, it doesn't seem to have gone above that for the most part, yet. Supply seems able to keep the price here for now but if demand keeps up, supply could run out and the price might get really silly.
Snapcaster has been sinking from $25 just a little, on my radar, but not much. Garruk Relentless is dropping fast and there seems to be little buzz around him at all, dropping him below $20, and falling. Geist of Whatever hasn't sold well for me but seems to be hanging around $15 or so. Skaab continues to disappoint. Stromkirk on the other hand has made consecutive 11-point jumps to land at 6th spot this update! At $10 and rising, it's the second most valuable rare in the set now. The dual lands seem content around $6.50 each, as do Olivia (warm) and Past in Flames (cool). Angelic Overseer has no business being in the top 33, let alone the top 15, and I expect the market to realize that soon. Heartless Summoning, Tree, Daybreak Ranger, and Parallel Lives are disappointing right now, while very few cards on the second half of the list are looking good.
Common and uncommon data is still sketchy. Most I'm just selling rares and mythics still. Players (buyers clearly filling out decks) are few to this point.
i opened a stromkirk noble at the prerelease.. but thought it was a $2 rare. then i found it to be about $10-15, so i'm pretty happy. strange thing is, it doesn't seem that great to me. what format is pushing those high prices? is it just standard, or modern/legacy as well?
more importantly, do think the price will go up or down? in other words, is this a card to hold on to, or is it a card to trade/sell?
(as a side note, i opened a angelic overseer, and i'm thinking on selling, it seems not very good. is this a good decision?)
It sees play in t2 RDW decks. Its a great card for the deck and since RDW did well in some tournaments, people are rushing to get them to play RDW at states. Atleast thats what I think it is. After states, prices should stabilize. If RDW proves strong, this card will hold a solid 6-7$ but I don't see it holding the current price.
I'm inclined to call shenanigans on scg. Wizards has had no problem keeping my local store in stock (and it's the only store in one of the biggest cities in the UK).

If this is true, it's a nice niche for private people to get in. just buy a box or some boxes and start selling singles. I know allready some people who do...

Wrong. Speculators are rushing to buy all of them to sell to the people who want to build RDW to play at States. I don't expect them dropping in price until after the tournaments.

That's not the point. The point of my post was that people are looking to get them to play RDW at states. The speculators are there BECAUSE theres demand for them for RDW decks at states...
The price shot up because people are scrambling to get them for States. Goblin Guide is a good comparison. Noble is good but not as good as Guide. I think the card will settle around 6$ once more Innistrad packs get openend.
If this is true, it's a nice niche for private people to get in. just buy a box or some boxes and start selling singles. I know allready some people who do...
With singles fetching high prices at the moment it never look better cracking packs. It's quite difficult not to get back e value from the pack in Innistrad.
If the store owner says that I can't trade in the premises, I'll just go outside. If he says that I can't trade within 10m of his premises, I'll go to 11 meters. If he says that he doesn't want to see me trading, I will put a basket over his head and continue trading.
Yes, he's a local legend. He's only known to take his clothes off before he goes into the Ladies' Lockerroom. Nobody knows what he does in there because he's invisible, but it's almost certainly tons of masturbating.
Goblin Guide is a good comparison. Noble is good but not as good as Guide. I think the card will settle around 6$ once more Innistrad packs get openend.
Pretty much agree with this, it's not as good obviously but is a 4 of staple rare in every rdw and I think will stabilize at about the same price point as Goblin Guide after states
As far as Star City's pre-sales practices. Umm, the largest and best online stores ALL do this. At least the smart ones do anyway. They tier their sales. They know they are going to get x amount of boxes to open for singles, they can tell how many of each card they are safely likely to get, and then determine how much they want to put up at a certain price point. Pre-sales are as much of a guessing game as anything else, and it would be STUPID and FOOLISH to just put your entire pre-sales inventory up at a certain price. You put up, say, 10 playsets of a card at $2, and if that sells, put up another 10 playsets at $3, and if that sells, then put up another 10 playsets at $4, and so on, until their expected pre-sales allotment has been exhausted. Something being sold out briefly doesnt mean much, something being sold out for days, is usually indicative that they are actually sold out. This goes for singles, or sealed product. Once they have time to open more boxes for singles, or get enough boxes back in stock to be able to sell more online again, then they will do so. Assuming that they are intentionally depriving themselves of sales when they still have excess stock on hand (that they would use for their online store anyway) in order to create some sort of artificial hype, I just dont see, and anyone suggesting this would have to be the one to prove that its true.
Dont make up theories without proof, dont bash on stores without proof of something negative they are doing.
Fact of the matter is, this is the fastest selling set since Zendikar. Even at our shop the set is selling rediculously well both in singles and sealed product. Heck, I sold nearly a Grand worth of singles, and the shop sold over a case of boxes and two cases of fat packs, and at least a couple more boxes worth of booster packs yesterday alone, and thats on a day when we are usually a little less busy.
I know a lot of shops all over the place that have run out of sealed product (especially those that pre-sold a ton at low prices), and were or are currently waiting on a second order from wizards/their distributors. This sort of thing happens to starcity just as much as it does to any shop.
Star city games does. When they do pre-orders, they list some arbitrary number of cards in stock at a particular price (although they have zero stock of course), and then when those pre-orders 'sell-out', they increase the price, and add some new arbitrary amount as being 'in-stock'.
When they so blatantly do it with pre-sales, why is it such a stretch to think they do it with real product. Say you have 10 boxes, you list 5 at one price, wait for them to sell out, then put the price up and say you just got 5 more in stock, it's good business to be sure, but it's one of the main reasons we see these insane price spikes on chase mythics and rares.
I sold upwards of 10 playsets of Stromkirk for $3.50 apiece for SCG on Saturday. They are not trying to milk people out of their money. They're a business, and like Jeff said, things get hot and sell out so the price rises. It's basic economics.
SCG conspiracy theories have nothing to do with Innistrad price trending. Thread hijacking like this is trolling. Troll Warning.
No, we sold out. If we had any in stock, believe me, we'd be putting them up for sale.
I think we have a restock coming in either today or tomorrow, but it's not a large one.
You said "the largest and best online stores ALL do this"... and that's true. It's not a theory. I guess where my opinion differs is that I don't see it as dishonest, deceitful, etc. It's business.
dont bash on stores without proof of something negative they are doing.
He said that SCG tiers their presales, and you agreed. Everybody has the right to put up whatever number of singles they like, and at whatever prices they want to list them at. It's up to the buyer to decide what they want to buy, where they want to buy it from, how many of it they want to buy, and at what price they want to buy it at. All a seller can do is list a quantity of something at a certain price, and see if the market reacts favourably. It's not dishonest for sellers to list 10 of one rare and 50 of another, or to intentionally sell out if they want to, or to withhold items they want to sell later for more, etc etc etc. There's nothing illegal or immoral that I can see there.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with discussing that topic here. In fact, this thread is the perfect spot for it. LYING about what sellers and sites do wouldn't be acceptable. But honest discussion, as long as it's related to Innistrad singles prices and trends, is very appreciated from all members of this site.

Agreed. I sold a bunch of them for $3 shipped over the weekend, at which point it went to $6 and then $8 and now somewhere around $9. I do expect that it will settle in this range, though if it takes off in Standard it could go to $13+, especially if supply remains tight.

For the record I was replying in general to the guy who just got troll-infracted in this thread that was suggesting that SCG was intentionally holding back product, and then some of the talk that was after that. I was in a hurry unfortunately and thus didnt quote the person, so I can see why that could have been misinterpreted. In the end each store has their own setup and policies, I personally just dont like it when people bash on stores like that (with wild speculation of shenanigans and such), however I agree that discussing how different sites handle their selling policies and the pros and cons of that from the perspective of a seller and pricing on the market is relevant to this thread and too am totally fine with that.
Thus far the hottest selling mythics for me have been:
Liliana (prior to it going above $45), Garruk, Angelic Oversser, Mikaeus, and Olivia (in that order), (no idea why on the overseer, but its an angel with an interesting ability for a somewhat reasonable cost, so maybe thats why?)
The hottest selling rares have been:
Kruin Outlaw, Champion of the Parish, Bloodline keeper, bloodgift demon, heartless summoning, falkenrath marauders, stromkirk noble, mayor of avabruck, Isolated chapel, Hinterland Harbor, Woodland cemetery, Moorland Haunt, Kessig Wolf Run, Gavony Township. (In no particular order) And Ive still sold plenty of most of the other rares from the set too, honestly I havent been this impressed with how well a set has sold out of the gates (since release day) in a long long while.
Anyhow, I hope to finally get my initial pricing update posted in a couple hours, Finally got most of the other stuff I needed to take care of out of the way so Ill hopefully get to it (sorry for those that have been waiting).
