The twentieth anniversary of Magic: the Gathering is soon approaching; in 2013, it shall have been twenty years since Richard Garfield created this awesome and wondrous game that provided the people with a new form of fun and entertainment.
Therefore, I am wondering if Wizards of the Coast has any special plans for celebrating the twentieth anniversary of Magic, such as any special events or limited edition promotional cards and sets. What does everyone else here have to say on this subject? What do you believe WotC shall do to honor the twentieth anniversary of Magic? I myself do hope to see some special events with rare cards being awarded as prizes, as that would be a fitting celebration for this game's twentieth anniversary.
I don't think any anniversary plans have leaked out yet, but I'm guessing there will be a handful of nostalgia nods to the game's history set within the core set as well as in a forward-looking block release in Fall 2013. From the Vault is always fairly nostalgic, so they'll really have to get the juices flowing to tie it in to an anniversarial theme. The summer multiplayer product could be anything from another round of Commander precons with legends from the past brought up to the modern power level to Vanguard 2.0 (same concept as the old Vanguard cards, new implementation) to a new Un- set. Of those, I think the new Un- set is the most likely... MaRo keeps talking about how many designs they've harvested from Unhinged and Unglued for use in ordinary sets, so I'd be shocked if the next Whatever-Year-Plan they've got brewing in Magic R&D doesn't involve an Un- set sometime soon to flex that creative muscle.

Change the card back. It's not as unlikely as it would seem at first glance.
DFCs were a test to see how players would respond to cards with a different back. Overall reaction has not been absolute hatred. Note that "just okay" is fine because WotC doesn't want to do something with the card back that would cause players to leave.
Most players play with sleeves so mixing different card backs is moot for the most part.
The current card back is sorely outdated. The purple logo isn't used anywhere else anymore and the Deskmaster branding is long gone.
Several years ago when they were still in business, Scrye magazine had an article that talked about a hypothetical "Omega" set that was stacked with the strongest cards of all time, all in one set. Basically, this dream "Omega" set was basically a jacked-up Master's Edition set on paper before the concept of a Master's Edition even came into fruition on MTGO.
While such a set would be impossible due to the Reserved list (on that note, just abolish the Reserved list already Wizards... stop caving into the extreme vocal minority), it would be cool to have a set that was released that was full of historic and powerful cards in it.
Does the reserve list preclude the printing of another Collector's Edition boxed set? If not, they could make the new version foiled (or with gold/silver FRONT borders... but I prefer foil) to prevent them being used to make fakes.

No way. We have checklist inserts for DFC's. I don't know about most people, but I have several unsleeved casual decks made from draft leftovers and jank. I would severely dislike having to buy sleeves for all of my decks from now on.

That would feel kinda weird, but not completely unworkable I suppose.
Also of note, the Magic 'card back' card sleeves do feature updated card back art. Guess it's not totally crazy..maybe they'll make it official. Kinda cool prediction you have there..

However, Ultra Pro et al. Would LOVE it.
I too don't see this as being very likely. A lot of kitchen table players don't use sleeves, the casual players just play the cards as is. Wizards is not going to do something to alienate them after doing so much for them.
"He plays in a walk in humidor so keep his foils from bending. He once kept an all land hand just to know what it felt like to be mana flooded. He uses power nine for ante. He is the most interesting magic playing in the world." Old man, "I don't always tap basic lands for mana, but when i do, I tap Gurus."
I don't think they'll change the card back entirely, because as was stated before, you'd literally need to sleeve any deck that mixes old and new cards, and that would not be affordable for some people (yes, I know people that play Magic that have just enough to budget playing and buying Magic, but not enough to budget sleeves).
I think we'll see some crazy reprints. They probably won't abolish the reserved list unfortunately, but they will likely print several expensive cards in a box set of some type. I'm looking forward to seeing what they do.

No, the reserve list doesn't stop non-tournament legal cards from being printed. Also, this is a fairly popular idea, at least at the time I took a poll on these boards awhile back: http://forums.mtgsalvation.com/showthread.php?t=199047
I have felt for a long time that such a set would be cool for new and old players. I sent Mark Rosewater a bunch of emails with a lot of reasons to print the set. Hopefully someone at Wizards thinks it's a good idea, too.
I'm going on record right now and stating that before the end of 2012 we will see foil dual lands in booster packs (The real, Alpha dual lands). You can quote me on that.
No that would make it worse. I am opposed to "FTV whatever" sets that cater to people with 100+ bucks to spend on a booster.
It they do such a thing a product like EDH would be the best to include cards into since they are to this day the only way many of us have been able to acquire cards like sol ring.
I expect wizos to be on the money this time 20th anniversary should bring back the you make the card series, maybe even a new players rewards system. And why not a new treasures set like zen. I also expect new rules updates and clean up of abilities as well as a core set that has most of the staples from A,B and unlimited.
I think it's kind of stretching it to call 1992 the first year for magic. It might have been invented there and we have the test cards but it wasn't released.

I never sleeve my Pauper decks. About half my decks are Pauper decks. So twenty decks or more. That's a lot of sleeves I'd rather not buy.
"A rich man thinks all other people are rich, and an intelligent man thinks all other people are similarly gifted. Both are always terribly shocked when they discover the truth of the world. You, my dear brother, are a pious man." - Strahd von Zarovich
I'd like them to reprint alpha as a core like set. Adjust the rarity, to match the current distribution. Then add cards from the first few expansions to fill as needed. Print gold bordered, with a 20th anniversity logo. Add a 20th anniversity logo on the back as well.

How is that a cycle? Pretty sure the cycle was Healing Salve, Ancestral Recall, Dark Ritual, Lightning Bolt, and Giant Growth...pretty sure a few of those aren't ever going to be reprinted in a set that would be standard legal ::tongue:
Yep, that's the "original 3" cycle. Poor Healing Salve, never had a chance.
I would love to see them do something special with the M13 set though. Heck, just even doing an all reprints one for once would be fantastic.
M13 is released on the 20th year of Magic.

I think it's most likely there will be a fairly unexciting promotional set or something.
