I very rarely board out hapless in any match-up. in most match-ups he is simply better than careful study. He is harder to counter and, believe it or not, he is a clock, he also plays nice with exhume and is good against grave hate, neither of which can be said for careful study.
I like snapcaster against miracles and other (blue based control) because they frequently board out terminus, and its easy to steal a game with a random 2/1 and some 1/1s. He is also good against decks like deadguy, the gate, or pox, basically anything that makes you sac guys.
After talking to a miracles player recently, I might move inkwell to the board if only because if they see him game 1 they are less likely to board out terminus, and if they do, inkwell WILL win you the game.
Can you rely on the exhume + hapless researcher/entomb to overcome graveyard hate like crypt, spelbomb?
Because I don't feel like boarding 3xSnT, 3xEchoing Truth, 3xNeedles/Nature's claim just to overcome the multitude of graveyard hate.
In that case I would only board 3xSnT, swap fatties and then board in stuff that actually does something about your opponent's gameplan instead of trying to overcome graveyard hate.
Crypt and spellbomb are incredibly easy to play around, in fact, most permanent based graveyard hate is, in my recent games I have stopped boarding in Show and Tell in a lot of matchups. It is still good in matchups where I am not afraid of them dropping something special, but against decks like maverick and miracles, a lot of the time their KotR or humility or Karakas is just better than whatever we drop. I tend to board in stuff that deals with my opponent very frequently, as it makes your D7s much more powerful, in fact, I believe that in game 2 and 3, resolving a Jin or Griselbrand should be more powerful than it is game 1.
I personally run 2 grisel and one Jin, diversifying your d7s a bit helps against extirpate and surgical, plus Jin is just a monster against a lot of decks. Against UB control, it probably isn't a good idea to use your counterspells on delver, because if you resolve one good fatty, you should be able to ride it to victory. Countering a v clique or a bob however, could be much more important, the advantage and knowledge they gain off of those cards is huge. Also, I have no problem with reanimating v clique and I am not too scared of reanimating bob either, though there could be that one reveal where you just die.
Best thing to counter against them is probably Jace if you can. Lili is good, but she can only do so much against you as she puts guys in your graveyard for you (from field or hand).
It still needs some work, but I think that having a way to hardcast Griselbrand with DR in case of a gravelock is a good thing. I'm thinking about removing 1 swamp and 3 fetchlands to add a set of Wastelands too.
I need some feedback

What do you take out for SnTs? I used to take out 3xexhume. But I recently took notice of the exhume/entomb trick when dealing with nihil spellbomb or tormod's crypt.
You cast Exhume.
In response, your opponent exiles your graveyard.
After the graveyard exiling resolves, with the Exhume still on the stack, cast Entomb.
Note Exhume doesn't target, so you still get to pull a creature with it when you pull off that trick.
Gotta say... I'm a little dumbfounded by it. No Counterspells at all? Only 2 copies of Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur/Griselbrand in the 75? Sphinx of Uthuun? There are a couple of interesting things, though. I'm a fan of Deep Analysis and Bloodghast, and the transformational sideboard is somewhat intriguing.

I'm new to playing Reanimator in Legacy and was just coming to this forum to ask the very same question. This decklist really left me at a loss for words (and understanding).
The Sphinx really has me at a loss. I guess one point in its favor is that you can pitch it to Force of Will, but there are no Forces in this deck. And I guess it has a fair chance of giving you something good in your 'yard of hand when it hits play, but isn't that a bit after the fact? Don't you want to set up your hand and 'yard before you Reanimate? And then just win with the creature you have? Was this just a last minute substitution for another copy of something similar to Jin or Griselbrand?

I'd noticed that as well, and while poking about on TC Decks, I found what appears to be a nearly identical list that finished 32nd at the Legacy 2012 Magic Online Championship Series.
Perhaps WWEHBK is Figueroa's MODO username? Regardless, it's not like this gives us any actual answers about WTF was actually going on with that deck list, I just found it interesting.

It looked really cool and made me want to try it out. Nice that it doesn't need the force's online. Also I like that with the extra discard you can disrupt and know exactly if you can go off. Also with the extra peak at the opponents hand you can know what to entomb for.
I've been wondering also about the card choices and which situations they are most useful.
Sphinx of Uthuun - maybe non-legendary card draw when low on life? is this better than sphinx of steel wind?
Griselbrand - is one really enough? helps if someone tries to remove all copies and only snags the one. Also I guess having just the one leaves space for the other reanimate targets to have more silver bullets game one
Crippling fatigue - I've been wondering what this is for? is there a creature that really hoses this strategy and could this be just a sideboard card?
Also I think the transformational board is pretty interesting.. lots of juicy snapcaster targets if they don't remove your grave in time, but seems like delver/snapcaster is a lot slower than the fatty win and very different than the show and tell route.
I think it's a really cool take on reanimator and looking forward to try to learn the ins and outs of it. If anyone has some more insight would love to hear about it.
I figured that with 10 ways to put something in the yard and 10 ways to get it back, I should never have consistency issues, but I often have all parts of the combo but one (and brainstorm/ponder in its place) but fail to find that last piece while thalia/merfolk/whatever is pounding my face in.
Is this a deck issue or an "I need to learn to mulligan more aggressively" issue?

Not really a forum for casual decks, but if you wanted to run this at a smaller event, i would consider replacing brainstorm with Preordain. Brainstorm is not nearly as powerful without the deck shuffling mechanic, and you are lacking fetch lands

When I said casual I mean i just updated it to legacy. It was casual, it is not any more. I take this thing to local legacy events. I would assume the shuffling mechanic in question is more fetches? I am in the process of acquiring those right now but will be unable to afford polluted delta for a long time yet.
I like brainstorm's ability to tuck cards away from targeted discard and the instant speed makes the card.
My questions are about A: my choice of creatures (meta is affinity, goblins, merfolk, combo elves, dredge, sneak show, more reanimator, delver; and B: Am I running the right number of spells of each time. What is the probability that my draws will be necessary combo pieces and what not.
Also, I see thoughtsieze in many lists, is it strictly necessary?
Also: Looking at the transformational SB above. Has anyone tested that in practice? It seems cheaper than a SnT board and alot more unexpected.
Thought seize is great because it does two things: First, it lets you look at opponents hand to discard, which lets you know if you can combo. Second, it can be used in necessary situations to discard your own creatures.
However, If you run a putrid imp/ hapless researcher version of the deck, I personally prefr cabal therapy, as you can flash it back by sacking the creature as well as not pay the life. However, this is not in the typical reanimator deck lists.

Well, it depends on what your decklist is. I was certainly run no less than 2, but 4 if you can find the room for it. With 4 FoW, 4 Daze, and 4 thoughtseize you should be very able to protect your combo.

I know you asked about creatures to deal with your meta, so I will respond to that first, after playing this deck a long long time, I found myself only infrequently going for Iona, and then she seemed to only be good against decks like storm or high tide, if those are not prominent in your meta, replace her for a Jin, diversifying your d7s a bit can be incredibly useful against grave hate and mind twisting your opponent can sometimes just win you the game. This may be a personal thing, but I really like tidespout tyrant over Angel of despair, if you haven't yet tried him, I'd give him a try.
I am really not a fan of your choice to play mainboard echoing truth, although it admittedly does make your draw 7s more powerful, it causes consistency issues for the deck before the combo.
from personal experience, although some of you may think I'm insane, if there is other reanimator in the meta, hapless can frequently take games by himself, so you could try adding a few more of him in place of ponder if you are having trouble with that matchup.
Thoughtseize is not necessary, but it provides another discard outlet in a pinch and primarily discards the largest pain from your opponents hand.
I hope that covered all of your questions, sorry if I missed something though.

If you dont like them, drop the idea and stick to your guns; everyones local meta is going to be something they have to adjust to personally. And who knows, maybe duress or therapy will be enough and you can save yourself a chunk of cash

I tend to agree on iona. I'll switch out mainboard Iona for jin, who has really pulled me through some unpleasant control matches in testing.
You are right about the echoing truth. singleton truth is just a holdover from the old deck (pre 2010 MT banning) and it is not as useful now, so i'll move that to board.
10 animates seems a tad high, as it's usually not an animation spell i am missing but the rest of the combo. I guess i'll drop 1 animate.
is 3 hapless too much? he can beat for 1, pitch to force, and flashback a therapy if absolutely necessary?
-1 truth, - 1 animate, +2 Cabal Therapy, +1 hapless, -1 careful study (fills same role, possibly better)
leaving me with 9 animation outlets, 12 (kinda) grave insertions, 9 forms of disruption
also, what is the verdict on elesh norn? there seems to be a fair bit of aggro popping up by me (maverick, goblins) and her constant sweeper might come in handy. the issue being i don't know what to drop.
Have not had a chance to true tyrant yet, i'll see what happens

If you dont like them, drop the idea and stick to your guns; everyones local meta is going to be something they have to adjust to personally. And who knows, maybe duress or therapy will be enough and you can save yourself a chunk of cash

Thor, Ragnar Röks!
Hela, and the Enemies of Asgard
Teferi, Temporal Archmage
