If by that you mean "can this deal combat and then also sacrifice itself in the same combat?"
Yep! I realize that STE remains at a pretty high power level despite the Magic 2010 rules changes, but it did lose that combat functionality.
My purpose here was to restore that functionality in a minimally-invasive way, and the best answer seemed to be to make it a black uncommon with first strike.
How does the power level hold up? I'm fine if it's not as good, generally, as STE, but I don't want it to suck and I certainly don't want it to be much (if at all) better.
First strike allows it to block an X/1 creature and survive. A death trigger like Viridian Emissary would be better. It allows it to trade with an opposing creature and still get the ability. Of course the problem with Viridian Emissary is that you can't use it at will. A way to sacrifice it like Yavimaya Elder could answer that. Maybe, for example:
1B Creature - Snake Shaman (U)
When CARDNAME dies, you may search your library for a Swamp card, reveal it, put it into your hand, then shuffle your library.
Sacrifice CARDNAME: Each player loses 1 life.
1/1
It trades with fast aggro decks or plinks away at slower decks.
I agree with silvercut, giving it first strike makes it much more profitable to keep around rather than sac. Death trigger makes the most sense - they tried to make a new STE in Viridian Emissary - but giving you a way to sac it is the real way to maintain functionality.
You could also go back into green that way if you wanted:
Sakaura-Tribe Younger1G
Creature - Snake Druid (C)
When ~ dies, search your library for a Forest card and put it onto the battlefield tapped, then shuffle your library.
Sacrifice ~: Each player gains 1 life.
1/1
Could make for a nice two-card cycle?
