That's a shame. I guess they didn't get the response they wanted from the community. But honestly, it takes a long time to gain the internet cred to become the site for hobby gaming, let alone a site for it.
I don't have any hard numbers on this, but I'm targeted more often than a black guy driving a beat-up sedan with a broken tail-light and no license plate, and Cy's well aware of that.
What is WOTC doing? I understand Gleemax sucks/sucked from the beginning but after all the cuts from the magic tournament offerings to help funnel money/effort into gleemax then yall can it after all the "wonderful" promises? Where is the PTQ season, JSS, and states we had taken from us for this years bad series of cuts?
thinking about that.. once WotC pulls thier head out of thier asses, (and finishes all the Updates and NEEDED work for MODO3, and D&D online.
They Might re-fund the JSS, Nat's, States, Pro and other tournies.. including getting a smaller host of Prereleases.. in large Venues, that doesn't "steal" the GameStores Product.. (even if i highly PREFER Large Venue Tournaments)

Honestly, I never understood the point of Gleemax from the start. What was Wizards doing? They were trying to make a MTGSalvation run by the officials of the game. The goal of Gleemax was to run down other MTG rumor sites and have discussion of strategy on the side. Obviously, Gleemax had every advantage over MTGSalvation, but in the end, it never overcame this site or others. It just goes to show that the entire concept of the "community" Wizards were searching for didn't work. Somewhere across the lines, "unofficial" was important.
Gleemax's true contribution to MTG was minimal. There was nothing on there that either 1) wasn't being done on another site or 2) what wizards couldn't have normally done on magicthegathering.com. The only thing it truly added was a greater discussion space. That alone doesn't give the site enough value. It's reasonable that Wizards has finally thrown the towel over Gleemax. It will benefit other "unofficial" MTG online communities.
I don't believe it's about budgeting. I seriously doubt Gleemax's maintenance is a serious bill on Wizard's tab. I mean, after all, a single person owns MTGSalvation! The same could easily be true for Gleemax. What Wizards is doing is purely strategic in the point of view of bettering the game.
I think the problem Gleemax has had all along is that apart from the message boards (which Wizards used to host anyway) it really didn't do anything that people wanted to go there for. If I want roleplaying news there are some excellent sites out there. If I want Mtg news then there's MTG Salvation. The fact it did nothing else made it worthless to go there unless you wanted to post on their forums.
I think that either they hadn't really started to implment it properly or that they hadn't really thought their strategy through on this one.
For me the main problem with Gleemax was simply that it misunderstood social networking. It's not a thing in its own right, just something that happens when you give people a shared focal point. Gleemax came late to the online space and brought nothing new.
I'm surprised Wizards is closing it, but only because I'm always surprised when a corporation does something to admit error. Good for them. It's the right call.

Not only this, but whenever I decided to go and have a look at it, it would always be super, super slow, or crash on me umpteen times.
This was the primary reason why I avoided even looking at it. It took minutes (sometimes never) for a page to fully download. Sometimes I'd see a post referring to something worth looking at at gleemax, then I'd just lose patience trying to browse through it.
