This one doesn't cantrip, but cannot be countered by instants and activated abilities. I like the "Fixed Counterspell", though I must say I expected some minor ability of sorts. |

Stifle II ![]() ![]() Instant (R) Split second Counter target activated or triggered ability. Abilities from the same source as that ability can't be played this turn. It's quite likely to be rare, considering how complex Stifle is. I cannot find a way to prevent triggered abilities from being stacked (since they're not played) unless I use a very laborious, very long ability which will not look elegant unless I use the word 'stack'.

No, it isn't. Hinder is currently in the format, and does it hurt it? No. And the Interdict is very narrow, and thus a sideboard card, though it is quite nice to see. Quote:
Why not uncommon? Hinder was uncommon, Counterspell was uncommon. Its fine there; probably is there so people don't have too many of them in limited. I like them both, and Cancel has been speculated on for ages, though I was thinking it would be named Dispel. Cancel certainly makes sense though. |

In some very rare cases, (Vs Reanimator...) Hinder is better, so i approve. UW is now dominant.

Regardless of the name I will be calling "Stifle II", "Stop". That's exactly what that effect is. Annoying little permanents with abillities... stop... at least for a few moments. Those of us with kids know how important those moments are. Now if only TS brings us a reason to use it. Magus cycle, Jaya, Pentarch Paladin.
Cancel makes me happy in all the wrong places. True permission may just return to T2. I know I'll be testing MUC as of tomorrow evening. Maybe I won't have to cry everytime I draw a Rewind. Yes I'm one of those guys that plays permission in casual and longs for a T2 equivalent. I'm tired of playing Orzhov and Izzetron. Gimme something full of Islands. Back on topic: At least these cards will give a boost to blue so it won't be exclusivley the color everybody splashes. Now let's cross our fingers for green.

This is some friggin' BS right here. Counterspell was always fair at UU, maybe too good to make any other good counters, but making the strictly-worse Cancel just says to me. "Hey! We're good to go back and step on the toes of tradition and precedent just so people can feel nice and safe about playing their giant overcosted crap!" Meh, whatever, if having a crappy Counterspell in the base sets means that there'll be good counterspells in the blocks, then thats cool. Just one less reason to use the core sets for anything other than lining the Carnivorous Death-Parrots.[/rant]

Aparently (From another informer *just now*) we ALREADY have the art for Cancel somewhere (I'm thinking Gencon art counterspell picture?)
Good to see more info coming in... More soon I hope!

There's the counterspell that MonoBlue or U/x has been missing (with Hinder rotating out). I am impressed by Wizards actually printing the card now. It must mean that in testing, a solid draw-go deck was playable, but not broken. I think this is a return to the Sligh vs. MonoU Control matchups that older formats have made somewhat infamous. U/x Control can't be that broken, otherwise they never would have printed Cancel now.
I hope... Stifle with Split Second seems redundant, unless it stops Storm copies, and can't be countered. That would be extremely good. Is that how it works? I wonder what my regular Stifles will go for now...price wise... |
