Zayina stood above the vast crowd assembled to hear the speech. She had the privilege of overlooking the stage from her parent’s balcony but she truly yearned to stand among the masses, arm to arm with her peers and stand united… just like they would when they fought together. When the speech finished, the accendo was flowing through the crowd in very large amounts. Zayina focused the energy and brought the wind into her house and blew out every candle in the mansion. She would need rest before she embarked on any sort of dangerous missions. “Noanna!” she beckoned. Her maid and closest friend appeared. Noanna was tall and lean and had a great deal of beauty concealed underneath the dirt and mundane clothing that would come with being less fortunate. “How can I help you, Zayina?”
Zayina was looking forward to what was going to happen, but now she felt the desire to rest "I need some rest, please make my bed ready." she told Noanna with commanding but respectful tone. She went inside and went into her private room, changing her clothes for a purple nightgown. after that she went to her bedroom to see if Noanna had did as she asked.
The bed was prepared and Noanna sat next to it, cleaning up some dishes left on the night table. She inquired, "I assume you listened to the speech? I'll let you rest if you'd like, but if you want to talk about it, I'm here for you."
Zayina sat down on the bed, legs crossed, the material was very soft, silk-like. Yes, she liked this life, she had everything she needed and more, but still she longed for something ... "So, this will be a full scale war now?" she asks to Noanna, staring down at herself, or actually to what she could see of herself.
"It shall be the largest war this world has seen, I presume" she said with some degree of solemnity, "it will demand much from every Nomeni. Even if we are not fighting, the support from him is vital to our victory... it just seems like we can never truly win, though. War has been going on for decades and I am just a little bit skeptical of this saviour artifact. How will you be supporting our cause?"
"I don't know ... but since father took me into the wilderness two years ago I have the feeling that I need to go out there and fight, but I'm still not sure if it's such a good idea ..." Zayina explains to Noanna, now looking at the maiden.
"Well your parents surely won't approve. They believe that you can support the cause from behind the scenes." She averted her eyes, "but I do say that I may have no choice but to go..."
"Well, father will be going of course, and if you're going ... what will I do? Sit here alone with mother? For years it has always been the same, I'm old enough now to make my own decisions but still they hold me back!" Zayina sais, the last part with a raised voice, anger wells up and a single tear rolls down her face.
Noanna brushed he cheek gently, wiping the tear away and carefully placing Zayina's hair back into place. "They will see you for who you are. Be confident and be strong... any weakness you exhibit will only prove their point."
She kissed Zayina's forehead, "for now just get some sleep."
Zayina nodded as Noanna spoke those wise words, she went under the covers and closed her eyes Tomorrow I'll speak to them ... she thought, but much more would not come into her mind, she was tired and soon fast asleep.
That night her dreams tormented her. Gale winds blew the Nomeni to pieces, taking the entire forces with them. In the dream, Zayina stood above the battleground safe as her brethren was swept away. She tried to control the winds but there was more to these winds than she could control. They didn't feel natural at all... it was like they existed for no purpose other than destruction.
With a cry, she woke up in a sweat, her entire body drenched. It was just starting to become light out but the rain was coming down and streaking down her windows.
Zayina closed her eyes, those dreams ... she tried to connect that what she could remember to each other, what was happening to her? Was this a dream? Or a vision of her future? No! She did not want to think about this, she shaked her head as if to try to shake out the dreams. "Noanna!" she called out loud, confused and feeling all dirty with all the sweat.
Noanna slowly opened the door and crept in. "I heard you yelling in your sleep. What has stirred you?" She looked at Zayina with concern on her face, "you're soaking wet!"
"I figured as much. After our conversation last night, I'm not surprised" she acknowledged as she fetched Zayina new clothing for the day, "can you decipher anything from it?"
"I saw ... I saw a battlefield, our men where getting killed ... I was standing on some height and I was forced to watch, I couldn't turn away ... the winds where not normal ... I couldn't control them ... I ..." Zayina told, she wanted to say more but she couldn't remember anything else. She slowly raised herself from the bed and sat down on the edge, face in her hands, thinking about the dream.
Noanna nodded, "Your dreams will torment you as a spectator of this war. Your subconscious is telling you that you are a warrior. The winds, however... I cannot begin to explain how those can possibly mean anything."
She pulled Zayina out of her bed, "Today you must talk to your parents. They will not be pleased, but you must have resolve... now what would you like to wear today?"
"I don't know, I just feel very bad today ... what are the options?" Zayina asked Noanna, her thoughts where fixed on something else right now but she knew she had to look good, certainly today, she just couldn't face her parents looking like a peasant girl.
A black and blue dress was handed to Zayina. It was studded in blue crystals that her father, an earth adept, had created for her. A tight blue weave ran down the back of it and around to the front atop her chest and the rest of it was a dark black, elegant in its darkness. It was the dress of royalty and had just enough emotion attached to it to give her the strength she needed.
The soaked gown dropped to the ground as Zayina changed, trying to settle her nerves. She didn't really notice it, but she was shaking and Noanna put a comforting hand on her bare shoulder, "Confidence. In everything that you do, stay confident."
"Do you even need to ask?" replied her friend with rhetoric, "you're always breathtaking. If your wind doesn't blow enemies away, your beauty will"
Noanna tried to keep a straight face as she said it but the sheer corniness of the pun sent her into a fit of laughter.
"Breakfast is already prepared. I was just putting it out when you called me" dutifully noted Noanna.
The rain was still coming down outside, making the light only peek faintly through the window. It was actually much later in morning than Zayina has initially guessed.
