In laymen terms: if there are S symbols out of 129 total symbols, there will be x lands of that color out of # lands.
in my deck, there are 21 land slots available.
SO.
solve those, by cross multiplying.
I round these numbers to the nearest half.
W = [(23 :symw:) x (21 slots)]/ 129 (total numer of symbols) = 3.74 ~ 3.5
U = [(45 :symu:) x (21 slots)]/ 129 (total numer of symbols) = 7.33 ~ 7.5
B = [(18 :symb:) x (21 slots)]/ 129 (total numer of symbols) = 2.93 ~ 3.0
R = [(12 :symr:) x (21 slots)]/ 129 (total numer of symbols) = 1.95 ~ 2.0
G = [(31 :symg:) x (21 slots)]/ 129 (total numer of symbols) = 5.05 ~ 5.0 3.5
Sometimes this is the problem area. Dont pick too many filter lands, and dont put too many vivids. Too many filter lands, and you wont be adding ANY colors! Too many vivids, and you're bound to draw them when you need that 4th land to Wrath, but it comes into play tapped!
This list of lands is bordering on too many filters, but with reflecting pools, vivids, and pain lands, I should be alright.
if you're confused by any of this, let me know. I'll try to clarify. (itd be easier to show you on paper, lol.)

I tend to use a similar process to come up with limited landbases, but for constructed I don't like defaulting to this as it completely ignores your curve. Sure, it'll work out for slower decks where you probably have 3 lands in play before you actually cast anything, but this won't give you a multi-color mana base that allows you to play Thoughtseize first turn and Teeg turn 2.
This is how I figure out my lands when drafting, and it always works out great.
One thing to keep in mind: if you have a 2-drop with 2 mana symbols of the same color, or a 3-drop with 3 mana symbols of the same color, etc, you may want to include a few more of the associated land. Sometimes I let that decide the ".5's" you mentioned.
I don't think my method is perfect, but there is enough leniency in the rounding/land choice to make it work for almost any deck.
therestless - My formula doesnt take into account the curve. The lands you choose should. For instance, in my 5Color Control, I usually dont do things before turn 3 as you said, therefore I can run the vivid lands. I also want to be able to play Cryptic command at almost any time, and therefore most of the filter lands I play are blue. If you're playing an aggro deck, Id expect next to no vivids, and a lot of painlands/filter lands/tribal lands maybe.
LordPenguin - When you're playing manafixing cards, those should help you decide how many lands you're playing and which way to round on the partial land slots.

Media is not making me steal. But in a way is like the story of the very hot girl with the short skirt teasing the old sick guy with a history of rape.
Very interesting and informative, thanks. I'm not used to building mana bases of more than 2 colors in a non-casual format. One question though, what would you count the Shards tri-lands as? One of each? 1/2 of each? 1/3?

If I were running a tri color deck, and I was running three shards lands, I would add them and lower my land slot count. I'd treat them like Reflecting pool, etc, since they'll tap for any of the colors I need.
In a multicolor deck, you can count them as 1/2 of the two primary colors you'll use it for, or if you use 3 of them, knock off one in each color.

One thing I noted from reading it: You say to ignore cards like terramorphic expanse (which includes panoramas, quite an important cycle at the moment in limited), but I've found that often it's beneficial to count them as your 'least' colour that it could fetch. For instance, if I count up that I need 10 plains, 9 islands, and 5 mountains, and then remember I have a playset of expanses, I'll replace 4 mountains with them (assuming none of my cards cost RRR). This essentially turns them into tap-mountains that can also fix if you draw extras. It makes your fetch-decisions easier, since you're more likely to draw your main colour lands, and just generally makes the manabase stronger (i've found) than if you discount those slots initially, and THEN work out ratios (which, in the above example, would leave you with more mountains than really necessary).
Of course, the negative side of this is that you can rarely play more than one red spell (for instance) in a turn, that's what you pay for the improved manabase, but if its just a splash colour, you aren't likely to have that problem in the first place.
I can see where you're coming from, but i feel like it may not help as much as you think. What would happen if you searched for your mountain and someone blew it up with stone rain? what are your other expanses going to get? or if someone Sowing Salted them? Also, suppose someone Pithing Needles Terramorphic Expanse. Then you're really screwed for that color. Or with Magus of the Moon (I know, not T2), you'd have mountains instead (in this example it works cause you're replacing mountains, but if you're playing UW?)
I would much rather have a more accurate color distribution by taking away 4 slots for the terramorphics first.

Pithing needle is the only T2 card you mentioned, and you aren't gonna see that in draft or in many common decks at the moment. I find that its worth the possible hate from land destruction, though I'd usually run some kind of multicolour fix alongside as well (Prismatic Star).
If I were you, I would at least leave two slots to mountains. play one mountain (to search for with Terramorphic) and two multicolored lands that can add red.

Get a sheet of paper.
First, I count up the number of COLORED mana symbols for each color.
(Hybrid count as 1 of each.)
There are:
Then I add up those numbers.
TOTAL number of symbols: 129.
I then set up a comparison.
this will be used to find the number of lands of one color.
(*-Dont include lands like Reflecting pool, or land slots that are taken by lands that dont add mana/have other uses - terramorphic expanse, maze of ith)
In laymen terms: if there are S symbols out of 129 total symbols, there will be x lands of that color out of # lands.

I round these numbers to the nearest half.
That means, in the deck there will be
in 21 lands.
Paper comes in handy here...
i make a little bubble for each half of a land.
Then I start choosing lands.
Each filter land counts as half one color, half the other.
Vivids count as their color.
when you put a land in, tick off the color that it is.
