The arrow connect with the target with a loud crack, piercing the paper figure through the neck as Sylius' companion watched her perfect shot. "You turn" she smiled, flicking her medium length brown hair out of her eyes. Selina had always been a prodigy, earning glowing reviews from peers and instructors alike. Not only had she never missed a target since she was 10, but it seemed as though everyone was her friend. Sylius had the misfortune of having a last name that fell right after hers in the alphabet, meaning that when they took their shooting rotation, he always had to shoot after her. Occasionally he would miss but more often he would, though even his best shot was barely mediocre by Selina's standards.
The familiar nervous sensation ran through the young boy as he stepped up onto the mat, eyeing his target carefully. There was no denying that a part of him wanted to impress Selina but his main goal was to strive to be as good as her.
[[This is my first Post here, but I think I understand the Basics of it from watching others.]]
Sylius had stepped up to his Target. He was sure that he wouldn't make the shot as good as Selina, but he could try his best. He tilted his hat up so he could see clearly, but yet block out the sun all the same. Sylius nocked the arrow when commanded and took aim as he always did. He aimed just highed than the neck as the arrow would generally Decend after being shot, basic knowledge to all Bowsmen. He drew back his string and re-aimed as needed then released his arrow to go wizzing in the wind.
The tipped wood hummed through the air, wobbling only slightly before smashing through the target. His shot had punctured the left arm of the body-shaped paper not far from the heart. As predicted it paled in comparison to Selina's but it was a hit nonetheless.
Sylius was Glad that it hit this time at least. He let loose a great sigh of relief as he went to go and retreive his arrow when told. He let loose a sigh of relief. Sylius then Stepped back into line next to Selina.
The next objective would be a rapid fire training gauntlet where a series of targets woud pop up and the young archers would have to hit as many of them as possible. Only one student had ever hit every single one, Selina of course, but it was an incredible feat even for her.
Sylius was once again nervous to follow the prodigy and he watched other students do their best. His observation was interrupted when the girl ahead of him spoke. At first, he thought he was hearing things but sure enough the brunette was looking straight at him, "nice shot back there."
He mumbled rather lowly, he wasn't sure if the girl could hear him. "Umm....t-t-thanks..." He wasn't one to get normally talked to so he wasn't sure on what to say. He just continued to stand in line and wait his turn.
"O-ok....What is it?" He whispered in his monotonic low voice. He stared at the ground to avoid eye contact though he did glace up occationally. He wasn't sure what exactly to say, he wasn't one to always talk nor did many talk to him either.
She smiled, "I'll be right back." She jumped out of the queue and moved to a large quiver of communal practice arrows. The girl returned a few moments later holding one, "here, pretend you were about to fire a shot."
Sylius just stared at her for a moment. "O-ok..." He took the arrow and did as he would be about to fire, put the arrow nocked and drew back. He wondered what she was getting at, but he would see soon enough.
"Alright" nodded the girl, "right now you hold the arrow too close to your body." She smiled as she gently took his elbow and moved it outward just slightly, "if you move your arm a little further away the arrow won't wobble in flight as much."
"I see." He nodded as he reaimed then pulled out his elbow like she had shown him. "Thank you..." Sylius mumbled. He continued waiting in line for the next challenge, unaiming and reaiming. Practicing what Selina had shown him.
She nodded her head as they both snapped out of the somewhat surreal moment as the instructor was calling, "Selina! Selina, you're up!" The prodigy swiftly whirled around and apologized, "sorry, I got distracted!"
As she stepped up and made a near perfect volley of shots, Sylius could feel gazes on him that were mixed between envy, contempt and most of all confusion.
