So, I've introduced a couple of new guys to the Cube, and it's come to my attention that cards that they've been enamored with in the past (I'm VERY guilty of the same thing) are cards that they value higher than cards that may be so-so in another format but very good in the Cube (Crystal Shard comes to mind).
I've decided, that as a reference point for all players -- new, old, experienced, inexperienced, etc. -- that we should all vote, discuss and work on having Power Rankings for the Top 20 cards, by color, and periodically update it. Once all the groups have been ranked, there will be a Top 20 vote with the main list coming from the Top 5 from each group.
We'll list around 50 of the top cards for each group (5 colors, artifacts, multis/hybrids and lands) then everyone will list their Top 20. Each card will received points based on how high you would typically draft it -- 20 points to the #1 card, 19 points to the second best and so on. When everyone has posted their Top 20s, I'll tally up the votes and post the Top 20 as voted on by the readers.
You should make your selection based upon the power of the card, the cast-ability of the card and the overall thought of how high you would draft it.

I made a quick edit after I thought about it for more than 1.64 seconds.
And the last thing I want to do is double up...but I'm thinking that this could be more like a checklist, something to somewhat memorize -- "if I see a Mind Twist, I'm an idiot if I don't take it over X...", etc

...however, I see which cards are the 8/8 and 7/8, but how would I know which is the best black card to take P1P1?
Kind of the "take this card no matter what" card...?
This is hard to do. The pack won't be full of black cards, and the top 15 black card list isn't going to help you make a good P1P1 choice. It's only going to help you pick the best card of that color from the pack. Even when all 5 colors and the lands, artifacts and gold cards have been done, unless you compare the lists to one another, it still won't really help.
There aren't many "take this no matter what" cards, and it's hard to get people to agree on anything. I'd stick to the cube comparisons thread. It's completely unbiased. It only shows the cards that get used. Nothing more. No opinions at all.

But this is somewhat based on the discussion you and I have had on cards like Sol Ring, Jitte, Balance, etc.
And to be perfectly honest, it's the discussions and opinions about cards that gets ME, personally, thinking about what is a good pick and what is not.
I'm not saying one person is right or wrong, but it's the unique points of view that give you something to think about. Most of the time it's something you SHOULD'VE thought about, but sometimes it's just something that's overlooked.
Silent Edge's Tidbits of Wisdom: The Lewis Theory - When the presence of a single card makes every other card in your deck better (see Lewis, Ray). The Rubber Edict - You'd rather have it and not use it, than need it and not have it. The Shotgun Wedding - Don't commit early unless you absolutely have to.
I think this sounds like a good idea. The comparison thread is a decent start, but really power level, draft order, and cube inclusion are three seperate things. What I would recommend is coming up with a pool of 50-ish cards in each color for people to rank their top 15-20 from. They can go off the board if they want, but I thinking making a pool will lead to less forgetfulness. Dump those results into a spreadsheet and we should get some cool stats.
Also to be clear, are you looking for a list of the cards power, or what you would be most likely to draft P1P1? I think there is a slight difference as Wrath of God would be more powerful than Swords to Plow, but I might draft StP P1P1.
Here are some quick hits off the top of my mind, just to get discussion started.
For black, the strongest cards that come to mind are Mind Twist and Demonic Tutor. Twist is just so strong and is probably just as powerful as power. Tutor, and most tutors for that matter, are as strong as your most powerful card, meaning that they can either be great, especially for combo decks, or horrible, for creature based decks. However, this is all relative, since searching your deck for an answer is always great. The reanimator deck is great and the poster child for that deck imo is Living Death, which can call claim for one of the best cards in black. Recurring nightmare is stupid, but it requires you too play more creatures than you probably want to.
Blue is chalked full of goodies. Timetwister, Ancestral Recall, Upheaval, Timewalk and it's Variants, Counterspell, Force of Will, blue is strongly considered the strongest color in cube for good reason. While there are no cards that really make me want to build a certain deck in blue, the color is always a good supplement for themed decks, such as Turbo-Heaval (G/U), Reanimator, and Survival decks. Oh yeah. Tinker. is. great.
White.... is bad. Most wrath effects are overrated, since the average cube deck will probably play anywhere from 7-9 creatures, in my experience. While this probably varies with different cubes, 2 for 1's and 3 for 1's just arn't that great in cube. Land Tax is a fine card, but isn't really a game changing as it could be. The strongest cards are definitely Balance, Armageddon, and Ravages of War, which really isn't fair to say that they are "white" because they can be splashed in every single deck. The best deck that I can approve of is White Weenie, preferably splashing red burn. In that deck, you definitely do not want to play Wrath Effects, but the Geddon effects will always be a "win the game" card. White does have the ultimate-colored beater in Akroma though.
Green is where it is at in my opinion. Tooth and Nail is a winner, a definite card to build around. Survival of the Fittest is probably the strongest green card that I can think of and that I've seen, especially since it's such an engine with Genesis, Basking Rootwalla and Arrogant Wurm, etc. Fastbond is a gem in the right deck. Life from the Loam fits in so many decks, particullary in the reanimator theme. The top picks in green should always be spells in my opinion, not creatures.
Red is fun too. The best card that I love to play is Sneak Attack. Wheel of Fortune is also a narrow card, although not too narrow, that is a first pick. Urza's Rage is probably a top tier, if not the best, burn spell in red.
Artifacts, I think, is where the trap is at. People will first pick Jitte and Crystal Shard all day long, and I will admit, I use to. However, Jitte and such equipments require you to play creatures, which is never a good thing. Crystal Shard is a weak engine that makes you play cards that you would probably never like to play, and an expensive engine at that. Besides power (including Sol Ring), the best artifacts are always cards that accelerate you, like Mana Vault, Gilded Lotus, even Thran Dynamo. Mind Slaver is a great win condition, since about 20% of the time, it will probably win you the match on the spot, and the rest of the time, it'll turn the match deeply into your favor.
I know this isn't a list, but if you want to make one, you gotta debate on your list.
For black:
1) Mind Twist
2) Demonic Tutor
3) Living Death
4) Recurring Nightmare/Twilight's Call
5) Vampiric Tutor
Part of me wants to say power -- but I think what I was going for was stuff that is P1P1. Stuff that you basically can't live without.
Basically, if you see it pop up on P1P5, the first thing you do is look around the room to see if the rest of the guys are pulling a joke.
I mean, if I see Wrath P1P1, I'll take it (I'm a control junkie -- and the best kind of mass removal is ALL OF IT). For whateve reason, if I'm put at a choice between Wrath and StP, I'll take the Wrath. But then you get into the discussion of color-commitment.
I'll do the legwork of making the spreadsheet and whatnot, but I'd like to have a resource that ranks the cards, basically by where you'd draft them.
What if we went color by color (I like Phantizle's idea of coming up with a pool of 50 cards) and everyone voted on the cards giving a point value to each one, based on which card they would draft higher?
Example would be:
Ancestral Recall - 50
Time Walk - 49
....
Psychic Venom - 2
Sea Serpent - 1
Or whatever...then we tally the votes, the card with the highest vote total is the card most likely to get picked the earliest.
So really you want P1P1 for each colour? Here is the few best from each...
White: Balance/Armageddon/Land Tax
Blue: Ancestral Recall/Time Walk/Upheaval/Mana Drain
Black: Mind Twist/Recurring Nightmare/Tutors
Red: Wildfire/Siege Gang Commander/Flametounge Kavu
Green: Survival of the Fittest/Sylvan Library
Artifact: Lotus/Moxes/Jitte/SoFI/Sol Ring
Multi: Vindicate/Pernicious Deed/Broodmate Dragon
Land: Library of Alexandria/Strip Mine/Maze of Ith
This is a good starting point. With red I look for XR burn -> FtK -> everything else. Is the third card in green Garruk? Rancor? Krosan Tusker? Plow Under? Man, this is gonna be tough (and fun).
Yeah...like I'm already shocked that Sylvan Library is that high. Same with Wildfire -- a card I REALLY like. This is already helping.
Is everyone agreed that we start with black? I'll come up with a general list of 50 (I'll take a surf through the Cube Comparisson list and surf everyone's cubes to come up with the most likely and most popular 50) and then we'll put it up for voting?
Silent Edge's Tidbits of Wisdom: The Lewis Theory - When the presence of a single card makes every other card in your deck better (see Lewis, Ray). The Rubber Edict - You'd rather have it and not use it, than need it and not have it. The Shotgun Wedding - Don't commit early unless you absolutely have to.
After we get the tops for each color (that includes artifacts, multis and lands), we'll vote on the tops overall based on the top vote-getters during the "color round".

Sound good?
I'd grab the cards from the cube comparison's list. Every 6, 7, & 8 would be a good place to start? Allow everybody to make a list of their top 10 from that list of cards and tally up the votes?
Here's the 6s, 7s and 8s from the Cube Comparisson. I'm SHOCKED to not see Recurring Nightmare on there. This list is 44 cards, so we have room to add, hack and slash to get our 50.

Obviously Recurring Nightmare as mentioned, but I'd also like to see Death Cloud on there, but part of me thinks it won't get a lot of love because of the BBB.
Phyrexian Arena is on the list.
I strongly agree with Hypnotic Specter, Doomed Necromancer, Unearth, Innocent Blood
I agree with Corpse Dance and Sudden Death

the problem, i think, w/ adding cards to that list to make it an even fifty is that the cards that get added are mostly likely going to be the bottom few cards. recurring nightmare being the only one that's not on that list that will probably be ranked fairly high. all the greats are already on there.

Here's the 6s, 7s and 8s from the Cube Comparisson. I'm SHOCKED to not see Recurring Nightmare on there. This list is 44 cards, so we have room to add, hack and slash to get our 50.
Let's get it started!

The Lewis Theory - When the presence of a single card makes every other card in your deck better (see Lewis, Ray).
The Rubber Edict - You'd rather have it and not use it, than need it and not have it.
The Shotgun Wedding - Don't commit early unless you absolutely have to.

For example, Mind Twist seems to be a typically highly ranked card, so you'd give it 20 points. Recurring Nightmare might get 19, and so on.

Any others?
Obviously Recurring Nightmare as mentioned, but I'd also like to see Death Cloud on there, but part of me thinks it won't get a lot of love because of the BBB.
Phyrexian Arena is on the list.
I strongly agree with Hypnotic Specter, Doomed Necromancer, Unearth, Innocent Blood
I agree with Corpse Dance and Sudden Death
