I thought the math there was just faked so that when you tapped the card it would read "Niv - Mizzet". I didn't realize it actually had a real solution

was that the answer WOTC game for the flavor text?

Most likely coincidental still that’s a funky plane

I also thought that it was (tap right) - (tap again) = 1 damage, but that was years ago when Niv came out.
(Z->)90*-(E-N2W)90*t=1 does say Niv Mizzet.
Z-> turned 90 degrees says NIV
E-N2W turned 90 degrees say MIZZE, the N squared means there's 2 of them
t is just that, T
so it says NIV MIZZET = 1

I always thought of it as a clever way of Niv Mizzet himself showing off his knowledge and his love for himself.
If you remember his back story, he's the super intelligent leader of the Izzet guild, and he's very into himself. He was also the only dragon in Ravnica that wasn't outright hunted because he was a beautiful, powerful, and intelligent leader.
His flavor text is meant to be a message to the people actually playing magic. When you turn a card 90° you are tapping the card, and only when you tap the card can you clearly make out that his name is spelled out within the parenthesis (with the exception of the "t"). If you look at the equation, it reads that (Z->)90° - (E-N2W)90°t = 1, meaning that "Niv Mizzet is number 1" as if he himself is saying he's number one, or "the best". It could also have reference to the fact that he deals 1 point of damage when tapped.
The fact that the equation could be put into a wicked awesome geometrical figure just makes it about a thousand times better.
I thought wizards was going to stop the "real world" feel. Thats why Grizzly Bears was changed to Runeclaw Bear. Diminsh is awsome but quoting Alice's Adventures in Wonderland....what? Oh well.
I didn't solve this myself as it's WAY over my head, but I found someone online that was able to solve it (a physicist apparently).
Anyway, here's his original pic, and then two that I stylized up in 15 minutes.
And then one without text.
The only thing that could have made this better was if it was actually a picture of the Izzet Signet or Niv-Mizzet himself.

Yeah, it's both.
Thanks for pointing that out, actually, I just noticed that.
