I saw there was no listing for Horobi, Death's Wail in the compendium. Ok, I can see that- there are some much better options for mono-black generals. But suppose one were to make such a list? Could it actually stand up and fight against a more respectable deck? What would the list look like, I wonder....
So it turns out, one can build a fairly normal MBC deck with still emphasizing Horobi's particular qualities. There aren't too many terrible cards in the deck, soley to target a lot of creatures for cheap.
Is there anything that I'm missing? I'd like the deck to be as strong as it can, while still maintaining focus on Horobi. So anything that either improves the deck, or interacts comically with the general is what I'm asking you all about. Anyone???
EDIT: After input from Tarasco's MWS experience, and other members' of the board, I have edited the list once again. I dropped the token subtheme and Eldrazi Monument to fit in some more tools: Graveborn Muse, Mind's Eye, Necrologia, Kozikek, and Urza's Blueprints have come in for added card draw. Barl's Cage and Dauthi Embrace have been added for permanent, repeatable removal. Duplicant and Ulamog were added simply for creamy goodness.
Horobi turns Norritt and Nettling Imp into mini-Visaras. However, without Horobi on the field they kind of suck unless you have a really nasty blocker.
As Sweaty Man said, those are global effects, not targeted. Only Nekrtaal and Hecatomb are targeted. And out of those effects, only the Tainted Æther and Lethal Vapors are able to destroy multiple creatures once they hit the table.
Try using Kuro, Pit Lord and Dross Harvester with Horobi. Pay 1 life, destroy target creature, gain 2 life. Board wiper, and you can just respond to them trying to break up the combo by paying another life.
Would it be worth it to include some equipment that grants shroud or indestructibility? You obviously aren't going to have Horobi out all the time, so if you play Lightning Greaves, then attach it to Nefashu before playing Horobi, Nefashu will be protected from Horobi's ability. Maybe some other stuff like Whispersilk Cloak and Helm of Kaldra to keep your guys protected.
Cauldron of Souls seems like it would be pretty nuts with Horobi, essentially you plague wind every turn. Seems like a pretty decent card on its own as well.
Spreading Plague is really cool; I can't believe I hadn't seen that before. I don't think it's appropriate for this deck, but for a five-color general...
Cauldron of Souls is a really interesting idea, too. I'm assuming the creatures will die from Horobi's triggered ability before they are granted Persist, right?
I can't include all the targeting lands, as that'll dilute Coffers too much. However, I think I can make a few concessions for fun.
You beat me in creating a Horobi deck The list looks good! I really like Nefashu in the list
I put off posting the list for a day, thinking you'd be all over it sooner or later. You should still put yours up though; I'd like to see where you take it.
Yeah, Horobi's trigger goes above giving them persist, so they all die and the Cauldron activation fizzles.
I'm not advocating all of the targeting lands, just giving you a list of the ones that target and don't contain any mana symbols other than B.(I'd at least add Maze of Ith and Desert. Shizo and Urborg are always good, too.)
Just curious, as I can't find it, why are you using snow lands over normal basics?
All right, so I don't know if anyone is interested, but I put together a version of this deck for online play. A couple of observations:
The deck needs more card draw. I know it has Phyrexian Arena and Promise of Power, but I found that if I played just one of my mana doublers, I would end up dumping my hand pretty quick and usually not have a way to fill it up. This means including Graveborn Muse, Necropotence, Necrologia, and similar cards.
The token theme never really gelled. I would draw Eldrazi Monument but no way to feed it. Bitterblossom was OK by itself, but didn't really contribute much when I didn't have the Monument. Same with Endrek Sahr.
Cauldron of Souls was a bomb, as was Profane Command and Urborg. Unfortunately there were times when I ran out of targeting stuff, but I think this goes hand in hand with the lack of draw.
I added Ulamog, and he was worth it every time. I also added All is Dust, which proved helpful as well at times, but not so helpful at other times. Opposing Ulamog's are a pain in the butt. I think a Duplicant may be helpful.
It's an interesting list with an unusual general. I'm probably going to work on it some more.

You actually built the list!?! My hat's off to you, sir! I put up the list mostly for some entertainment, but I never considered trying to play it. The fact that you took the next step is quite a compliment.
Even on paper, the token theme looked a little shaky. But what would be the correct approach- focusing even more on tokens (it's not really black's forte), adding more creature recursion, or dropping Eldrazi Monument from the deck?
I've only managed two games with it. I think just removing the token theme for more recursion/control and draw would be good. I'll mess around with it a little more and let you know what I figure out.
It's interesting how few opponents I've found that can take advantage of Horobi's ability. There's an emphasis on sweepers over targeted cards, so Horobi manages to stay out longer than I expected.

All deserve a good looking at. Gotta remember that mass ping turns deadly with horobi.
Actually the cloud effects dont target... there for they dont mass wipe. so infest only kills what would normally be killed by it ect.
also land kill creatures =]

Driving Stick with Isochron Scepter.
Trinkets and Treasure: An Artificer's Toolbox.
Proc Drops: Playing with One Drops.
Deck Primer: Toshiro Umezawa
Similarly puppeteer clique steals and exiles, although I'm not sure what to recommend cutting.
I'd also recommend -1 swamp +1 deserted temple for coffers fun.
I think you'll also need Nevinyrral's Disk and possibly All is Dust to deal with problem enchantments as well. And Bojuka Bog can replace a swamp.
It's an interesting deck.

if anything on equipment though id recommend some pinger equipment or maybe a Surestrike Trident
(You just have to make sure you equip it before casting Horobi.)
There are a few other lands he could use, too.

And yes, the snow lands are for Extraplanar Lens.
