Singles of the various new cards are preselling on a number of Magic sites (SCG, for example) at below the crazy-person-price on eBay.
It is fair to say these cards should not be unbelievably difficult to acquire after release if brick and mortar and big box stores will supply them. They are certainly no FTV boxed set, even if demand for certain singles will drive players into a frenzy.
Generally, I will say that people on this thread as misjudging just how underprinted this set was relative to demand, and how long it will take Wizards to catch up to demand with future printings. If it were possible, I would have ordered at least 5x as much Commander as we ended up being able to get, and I would have had no problem selling through it all. Our solicitations for the 2nd wave are nowhere near enough to meet demand, IMO. I'm holding out for the 3rd wave (who knows when? Late July/Early August?) to catch up to demand.

Thank you for this insight Ben...are you finding the shortfall situation closer to an FTV set or, say, Duel Decks: Elspeth vs. Tezzeret (which IIRC was another highly-sought but 'unlimited' printing) ?
I realize this is an apples to oranges comparison, which also is probably why there's so much difficulty for consumers and dealers alike in figuring out a fair price. Personally, I'm beginning to regret my strategy of waiting to buy at a big box store... Thanks again

Basically the "buy now or get left behind" mentality is exactly why prices reach ridiculous highs in other formats, and I would hesitate to post stuff like this in the future, Ben, because it creates a self perpetuating dynamic of frantic consumerism that's unhealthy for the game, especially when people shell out 20$ for singles that may end up as 3-4$ cards in a month or so.

I am very careful to only post this when it is, in fact, the case. I'm not commenting in any way, shape or form on if I agree or disagree with the prices, whether I think people should buy now or not, and the long term prices that these cards will hold. I am stating, and it is what I believe to be true, that right now Commander is shortprinted to a degree on a "regular" product that I haven't seen since Zendikar, that based on our distributor numbers on wave 2 Wizards wasn't expecting this level of demand, and that it will take Wizards a month+ to catch up to demand with future printings.
As far as the "buy now" mentality, it's no different here than in other industries. I can buy the newest Halo/Mario/Final Fantasy game now for $60, or I can wait a year and buy the 'Greatest Hits' version for $20. In this case, the window on Commander being higher priced is probably 1-2 months, but the comparison is valid. You know that they will be available sometime down the road at a lower price, but the question is, do you want to wait 1-2 months to get them?
I would not be surprised to see Commander sell out on the "Big store" level (Target, Wal Mart, etc) before this month is over, because as far as I've seen virtually every online retailer is sold out, and has been for weeks in most cases.
- Ben
PS: Given we have no sealed decks left in stock right now, and a very limited supply of singles (we had more FTV: Relics and/or FTV: Exiled singles within a week of launch than we're going to have of Commander), I don't really have a great motivation from a business perspective to hype this product. I don't make a practice of creating false hype; I tell it like it is, and let the product take care of itself for better or for worse.

The demand for getting EDH cards RITE NAOW is never as high as it is for Legacy / Standard cards. Most EDH players proxy and/or don't mind waiting a month or two to get the cards they need (one of the beauties of a casual format), hence it's only fair that they understand that these cards will still be availible in a month, two months, or six months.
I don't make a practice of creating false hype; I tell it like it is, and let the product take care of itself for better or for worse.
Fair enough, but I'm sure you'll agree that Time Reversal scenarios aren't created by themselves. I just want to make sure that people are well aware that these cards aren't going to be on a tiny FTV-esque print run and mistakenly shell out mega bucks for cards they'll still be able to pick up for reasonable prices down the line.
To backtrack some Chaos Warp is a relevant card for EDH but Flusterstorm doesn't seem to make any sense in that format. Not when you can tack on a blue and hard counter anything. Was this card placed in the political puppets deck for the eternal player market to drive sales or what?
IMO Ben is one of the straighter/est shooters in terms of financial articles in that he's unafraid to do postmortems and admit his mistakes. However I do think the comparison to video games is flawed, in that no retailer is charging above MSRP either for pre-orders or at release, regardless of inventory. So between Wizards' short print runs, dealers and consumers, there is enough 'blame' to go around.
To make this less spammy: I think there's more of a case that Flusterstorm was included in Political Puppets purely to move units, rather than Chaos Warp. It seems tailor-made to hate out combo in eternal and not really relevant in EDH, while also having a mechanic that Wizards probably doesn't want to bring back in a new block/core set. Whereas Chaos Warp could easily be (re)printed in a future set that is a bit looser with the color pie.

That's the one card I can't figure out for these decks, considering it's terrible for EDH. Yet WOTC made it rare and put it in only 1 EDH deck? Certainly an odd move.

I've been so close to pulling the trigger lately. Some top financial experts have already commented on buying out every store that prices command tower at $5, and many stores are already speculating the demand, including the bigwigs such as Ben's store, CFB, etc. I slowly stepped back and realized I'm a legacy player, not EDH, and have yet to see anything in these decks for the EDH deck I do want to build and don't already have so i'm taking the risk of waiting it out.
The mentality is unhealthy, but who are the stores to judge if someone wants to pay $20 for a card that will be $3-4 in a month? It's the same as the presales before every expansion, how often do the top end items actually hold out? Unless you bought those jaces from SCG at $30, $40, $50 or whatever their lower prices were when spoiled, i'm sure everyones taken a hit somewhere. Imagine anyone who preordered stuff like thrun and time reversal? Molten-tail masticore? OUCH!
On the contrary, sometimes the bottom end are also the ones that are interesting. Contested War Zones started at a buck and shot up like crazy, a few other random rares started low and on release had a huge spike in value. Everyone's got the speculatory mentality now and doesn't want to be stuck paying higher prices later, but no one can predict the market and when you want to get a card and brew with it you already wanted them yesterday, so it's easier to just go with the flow.
I'm glad to be a legacy player these days. The only thing i have to worry about it price spikes on older cards that i hadn't gotten around to picking up (Dark Confidant and Wasteland, i'm looking at you!), but at least i can wait it out on some of the standard stuff until it puts the result to make it worth my cash.
That's the one card I can't figure out for these decks, considering it's terrible for EDH. Yet WOTC made it rare and put it in only 1 EDH deck? Certainly an odd move.
I have been 99% gung-ho about these decks since day one, but that is the one move that makes absolutely no sense to me. Of all the 51 new cards it's the one that stands out as being completely useless in EDH... Mana Drain would have made more sense. Storm in a precon? huh?
I don't thinking paying up to 15-20 for a card like flusterstorm is necessarily all that insane. If you're a legacy player who doesn't want any of the other cards, it's a lot easier to just schill out $60-$80 than to pay $120 and then have a whole bunch of cards you have to sell off to recoup your money. Time is money, if you've got better things to do than sell off soul snares for $1 each then the simplicity of buying singles has advantages.
Anyway, I like the puppets deck, zedruu is crazy cool and nin is very solid, and there are some likely EDH staples like martyrs bond and chaos warp. It doesn't have much for reprints, but so what...sad robot and grave pact have been around for years, I want something new and exciting. The only deck that has similarly exciting new cards is mirror mastery imo.
Never seen a Target in Ontario but all the Wal-Marts I've been to carry boosters, fat packs, intro packs, duel decks, and the premium deck series so I would expect them to carry Commander as well (although likely a good $10 more than my LGS).
i'm in NB and the walmarts here in fredericton have boosters, fatpacks, duel decks and pre constructed decks as well. rumor has it they are going to have the commander decks as well. the only issue is everything is CRAZY high price wise. a NPH fat pack goes for 49.99 plus tax(lgs 4 minutes away has em for 38 taxes in). i'll be going to my lgs for them though. we can get all 5 commander decks for 125 taxes in. seems like a wicked deal to me!
From what I'm reading in the threads, the only people really getting jazzed about these are already EDH players.
They like new enemy-color & wedge generals..again..for decks they already have. And then the rest like these for the bb Sol Rings & other staples they missed the first go 'round.
Are any completely bona fide 'NEW' players picking these up? Are there very many of them?
Yes they are. The interest in EDH has jumped exponentially with the release of these commander decks. Alot of players are going to buy 1/2, then slowly upgrade from there. The powerlevel of these decks are pretty fair right out of the box and can hold their own in a multiplayer pod. Of course the decks will just get owned 1vs1, but thats just how it is.

Are any completely bona fide 'NEW' players picking these up? Are there very many of them?
Well, that's not totally accurate...I've got EDH decks but I don't plan on merely integrating these into my existing decks. The wedge dragons never appealed to me, but the new wedge generals are pretty sweet. I'm making new decks around the new generals, not just putting them in decks I've already got.
Of course, stuff like command tower and BB sol rings are going to get put into existing decks for obvious reasons, as will some of the better new cards, but I think the product will definitely result in a lot of new decks being made by existing players, since the most exciting part of the decks, imo, is the new commanders.
As far as new players, only time will tell. EDH has been steadily gaining momentum for quite a while, though, I think this release can only help it.
I can tell you within my group here at work, there are about 6 of us AT LEAST that will finally get into EDH.
I've been wanting to get into EDH for over a year, but I have no time to build a deck. This is the perfect way for me to play and build a deck to my liking over time.

I think it's pretty bizarre too. Consequently, the Mirror Mastery deck DOES have a storm card in Hunting Pack. I bet Hunting Pack is in there just to give Flusterstorm something to do, or vice-versa. Same thing with the rarity. They only wanted to put it in one deck (because let's not kid ourselves- this baby is REALLY narrow), ergo they had to make it a "rare" to stay in line with their system of 1=rare, 3=uncommon, 5=common for new cards.
I really dont get it. How can stores like StarCityGames charge 19.99$ for Edric, the spy master when its only 1 card in a precon that has 100 cards in it, including Sol ring and lightning greaves?
Whats the logic behind these price tags? who would buy any of these singles when you can get much more for just 10$ more?
P.T. Barnum once said "there's a sucker born every minute."
A lot is hype and speculation, though a lot of big names have been saying it's not just hype and these things will fly off the shelves faster than you can say commander. I guess if you want to try and make it to a walmart and wait you might get them but for everyone who wanted these cards yesterday they're keeping demand, so who's to blame the stores for offering the people what they want?
For some of the cards that might be playable in non-edh formats, like edric, flusterstorm, and chaos warp, people might not want to spend $30 and end up with a bunch of singles they can't use and don't want to spend time trading/selling off.
Probably they're basing their prices on ebay prices, which are high because of the low supply. Once the supply increases, the prices will probably go down, but if some of those cards prove legacy playable then the prices could still be fairly high.
i'm only interested in the casual cards from commander since i dont play legacy. Most of the these new cards are perfect for my casual cube but im not willing to pay 3$ for an acorn catapult.
i'll just wait for hype to blow over before buying singles

I'm sure acorn catapult will drop. The chase cards will drive sales but probably result in a flood of less-desirable cards. I'm also guessing the commanders won't be too expensive, since most people will buy the deck, use one of the new generals, and trade off the other 2.
