I'm currently playing the following at FNM and it's consistently going 2-2 so, as 3-1 pretty much guarantees prizes (I've had prizes with 2-2 with this deck), I'm looking for ways to improve its performance.
chancellor of the dross is bad. even when its in your opening hand its very unimpressive. and if you draw it at any other time its completely dead. don't play uncastable spells in your deck.
otherwise the rest of the deck looks like its deliberately paying life just for the heck of it. where's the payoff? i was expecting to see Death's Shadow in there so you'd have some reward for paying life. but your deck is just killing itself for no reason. why?
You can definitely remove stuff like Vendetta and play much better removal like Doomblade or Go for the Throat. Also not sure Mental Misstep deserves a maindeck spot. Which 1 mana spells are you trying to counter anyway?

It actually comes into play and wins games at times. Rarely but still...

They cost 2. Besides, that was meant to be Lightning Bolt. I've updated the decklist as I forgot to check it was up to date before posting. The land count might still be off though.

Anything that kills my creatures or a particularly nasty looking one drop. Or another Mental Misstep...
Anyway, to clarify, the idea is to cast one of the two creature boosting spells on the Souleater and swing for the win as soon as possible, pushing it through with the Spellbomb, Apostle's Blessing and Bolt. Misstep and blessing protect the creature, with Kiln Fiend acting as back up if it fails, while Inquisition and its cheaper version remove threats to the plan ahead of time.
If you don't draw what you need, Panic Spellbomb doubles as a draw if your opponent has a creature out and the Chancellor is in there to give you the extra life you may need, as well as making the Assault Strobe win easier. And, of course, you can always spend mana on the Souleater's ability, no matter how odd that might seem at times.

4x Chancellor of the Dross? this card is bad. deaths shadow for sure. tainted strike is aweful in a non-poison deck. mental misstep is garbage and needs to be something else like burst lightning.

I don't think you understand how tainted strike works in this deck. When you use it, you will be swinging for ten so the lack of other poison is irrelevant. It is in solely as a way to effectively double damage and make the Souleater brutal.

So why is Immolating Souleater in that deck exactly if it will never do any serious damage?
dealing serious damage is a point of view. your using it to do lethal +. If souleater does 5-6 damage in a hit that is serious damage to me. you looking at it like a combo, where as I look at it as a powerful aggro creature that has a synergy with deaths shadow.

Currently the main thing I'm losing to is that blue black deck with old Jace, Ponder, Grave Titan, Dismember, Creeping Tar Pits and an annoying Black Sun's Zenith or two in the sideboard. Any suggestions?
