The card's most recent move is on right. means no movement. is a card that wasn't on the list last update. This is the update's hottest mover. (#) is price in CND incl. shipping here.
Out of this large set, just 18 cards are worth as much as, or more than, the price I pay for a booster pack. Therefore, the M13 tally begins with 18 entries. Just under the $3 cutoff are Cathedral of War, Elderscale Wurm, Primordial Hydra, Serra Avenger, Slumbering Dragon, Disciple of Bolas, and the blue dual lands. Depending how things go, these cards may end up making the cut in a later update.
As you see, very few M13 rares are worth opening in a pack - unless you crack Thragtusk, you're probably not very happy. Mythics of course are another matter, and again carry most of the value in the set. Planeswalkers seem to always be made powerful enough to top the list, and of course in this set we have the severely undercosted Hellkite and Archangel. But Ajani stands way out in front, uncontested, a full $12 higher than either of them, or the lovely Liliana. The misnamed Omniscience comes in at 5th, way down at $9. The lack of anything in the $10-$20 range severely puts a damper on this set's box value, unfortunately. Thragtusk is the top rare at the moment and I'm not sure where it will go, as it is hard to evaluate, even though I usually know green cards well. Vampire Nocturnus is the highest reprint, and may not hold that price point unless it performs very well. The list degenerates from there, and many won't make it more than another update or two before they disappear.
For uncommons, Reliquary Tower is quite pricey (these days anyhow) at $1.50 while Rancor, Augur of Bolas, Rewind, Tormod's Crypt, Vampire Nighthawk, and Jace's Phantasm are all $1. Since there are a ton of rares (most of them, actually) worth 50c or less, it's good to have some help from a handful of playable uncommons. Personally I like the Knights of Infamy and Glory, but they don't seem to be selling for much.
I'll be following the set's price moves closely over the first few days and weeks, and then regularly as the set matures.
As per every other running tally thread, we're here to discuss values, projections, and directions of cards from the new set Magic 2013. If you want to contribute a price list to the thread, I will add it to this opening post. However, if you wish to have it added you need to provide a Top-10 list with prices and a source for those prices so people understand where you're measuring from (as prices taken entirely from a single store will look different than data taken from completed eBay auctions which will look different then data taken from the low prices of a number of stores).
18 cards over $3 doesn't sounds great compared to Avacyn Restored's 28 (yes, I checked!) but that's probably okay for a Core Set with a lot of reprints and a lot of rares that... aren't aimed at the competitive side of the game, let's say.
It's usually those cards which spike early, while casual faves are usually slow burners.
Mind you I don't see anything other than the two new planeswalkers, the Sublime Angel and the Hellkite holding value over $10 in six months' time.
Yikes, that's a huge gap between Ajani and the Angel and Dragon. I also can't really see Omniscience holding a $9 price tag for very long either. Surprised to see a new Planeswalker starting so low. I imagine Lily will be down to $15 in no time.
Thanks for the info, RE. As I was expecting, not much value in the set at all. I hope you're not going to lose out too much on this set as I know you don't get that big of a discount in Canada for boxes, right?
After m12 I really thought they would've made some good new cards for m13.
Nothing in this game is degenerate or completely dominant. They haven't banned anything in standard in a long, long time. Hell they should have banned affinity right away, but they didn't until boxed sales collapsed too. Hasbro had to come in and fire people.
I'll enjoy watching all the whiners eat crow monday.
I don't see how this list is going to change much over the following weeks, I think the top 3 will stay the top 3, while everything else will fall slowly. The only one to watch, really, is Thragtusk, but to be honest, it's a green rare and I don't see it holding it's current value. I think within a week after release we could have a top 15 as lot of those cards aren't worth their value, Talrand, Serra Avatar, and Gilded Lotus should drop off the chart quickly. I expect Liliana to fall fall fall.
What an awful set for value, I feel sorry for you guys that have to open product to sell it.

"I've always been a fan of reality by popular vote" - Stephen Colbert (in response to Don McLeroy)
3 freaking rares worth a flying flip and the rest is all mythic that is worth anything. Master of the Pearl Trident, Mutilate and Thragtusk are the only rares worth it and I dont even see why thragtusk is so high. The others are mythic and even some of those are overhyped like liliana. Ajani is the best one over all. This set is just an overall janky mess.
RE: Thragtusk. To me it is very similar to Obstinate Baloth from 2 years ago (It was to blightning what Tusk is to Vapor Snag). If I remember correctly, it was worth 8$ at release.. then a couple bucks a few months later and no more than 1$ a year later.
hey on a high note looks like we can stop complaining about high priced magic cards, Im just glad some good EDH staples like Memorial and Lotus getting the reprint.
This thread is full of idiots... Lightning Bolt is NOT being reprinted.
Many times has a writer in Wizards said so, because of the plain and simple fact that it's too powerful for what it costs. x/3 creatures shouldn't be able to die at instant speed for one mana without a signifigant drawback. (like PTE giving you a land)
I absolutely guarantee that LB will not be printed in M10, and you can quote me on that.
RE: Thragtusk. To me it is very similar to Obstinate Baloth from 2 years ago (It was to blightning what Tusk is to Vapor Snag). If I remember correctly, it was worth 8$ at release.. then a couple bucks a few months later and no more than 1$ a year later.
Similar in design, yes, but to me it seems like the upside to Thragtusk is much harder to mitigate if you're on the opposing side. The only ideal solution is to counter it (EDIT: Blade Splicer probably shrugs it off as well), which is looking like a weaker option come October. I agree $8 is a lot for a green creature in Standard, but I don't really see it dropping like the previous hosers (Obstinate Baloth or Great Sable Stag) before it simply because it is easier to splash and serves as a much larger roadblock. I'm sure I'll be wrong, though!
I hope you're not going to lose out too much on this set as I know you don't get that big of a discount in Canada for boxes, right?
Yeah, I pay retail price (I can't find a store owner up here willing to sell me boosters by the case for a discount) so it comes out to $3 or so per pack. I'm chasing 18 17 cards in a large set!
That said, this isn't ROE or DA. Probably close to that bad, we'll see. I don't feel as discouraged as others appear to, but yeah, it's not a great set. Perhaps we've been spoiled by M11 and M12 being good sets?
Well Thragtusk sold well since yesterday and seems to have moved up a buck or so, but yeah, this set doesn't seem to have much potential for hidden gems waiting to be discovered.
@rancored_elf: does your pricing of intro pack rares (Talrand and Yeva) include the fact that they are intro pack rares?
Kinda, for those two cards I went with prices I saw other vendors pricing them at, more or less. They're both pretty solid cards. Recently I haven't seen into pack rare prices being overly affected by the additional supply. I think in the long scheme of things, being an intro pack rare only contributes a few % more in total volume, so really doesn't alter the price as much as some people think.
Talrand, Serra Avatar, and Gilded Lotus should drop off the chart quickly. I expect Liliana to fall fall fall.
Agreed on Lotus and Avatar. As reprints that were once very popular and playable, they'll have initial value and then completely disappear. Unless they quickly find Standard decks, both should hit $2 within weeks. Talrant may drift downward but as a new card, and one that could be quite potent, I wouldn't be shorting its stock anytime soon. Liliana seems safe at $19 for the moment (selling fairly well at that price on eBay etc) but you may be right about it in the longer term.
I agree with this part of your post a lot. Decisions on what to include seem random. Partial cycles, weird jank that nobody wants, underpowered or annoying cards where more reasonable choices could have been made, little or odd synergy, and so on. Then a few vastly overpowered new mythics for the booster-buyers to salivate over. Bah.

Mutilate fell below $3 and therefore dropped off the tally, leaving just 17 cards worth the price of the booster pack they come out of.
Some of the movements on this early update can probably attributed to "noise" (anomalies not related to actual price action), but in my opinion there are some moves to take note of. First, the top 4 seem solid and unmoving right now. Ajani and/or Liliana may be overvalued (we shall see), but the Archangel and Hellkite are the real deal and I think demand will keep them up. Thragtusk is selling well on eBay and playsets can't be found for less than $40 plus shipping, so I've got it at $10 shipped now. Omniscience is expected to continue dropping (not to say that it isn't a potentially powerful card in some environments, but it doesn't have enough mass appeal to justify such a price tag). Most of the reprints will continue to drift lower. Master of the Pearl Trident moved up a little (I sold 2 playsets to one of my regulars, and I think it's going pretty well on other sites) but I think once Modern/Legacy players have their sets, it will cool toward $3 and may eventually fall off the tally, despite being a powerful lord on paper. Also, it seems like a strong possibility for reprinting in a year.
Not much else to report at this early time, but I'll update my prices again tomorrow, and report here if anything's interesting!

To the people that say that a card needs to be a higher rarity because of Limited... I hate you guys so much. I present to you with this.
For the sake of at least giving an important bit of information to start, I did a quick run through tcgplayer for the rare/mythic values, and then took the price of a playset of commons/uncommons and divided by 4 to get the uncommon/common set value, and then estimated the overall average box foil value.
In the end this is what I came up with for the overall average box value:
Mythics: $9.50/mythic x 4.5 mythics/box = $43/box
Rares: $1.50/rare x 31.5 mythics/box = $47/box
Uncommon/commons: $6/set x 1.8 sets/box = $11/box
Foils/box: $6
Total overall average box value: $107.
Not too bad, not amazing, but not too bad.
The main problem I see, is that a lot of value of the set is from a few cards at the top. Historically speaking, most if not all of those cards will probably drop, and thusly that overall average box value could tank rather hard, but I suppose we'll have to see.
EDIT: Just a small aside, there are quite a few playsets available from vendors on tcgplayer of thragtusk for $30-$32 shipped.
EDIT: Just a small aside, there are quite a few playsets available from vendors on tcgplayer of thragtusk for $30-$32 shipped.
Grabbed one of those myself today for $29 shipped. Definitely seems like a good idea right now.
@R_Elf - thanks for the reminder about that happening w/ Saviors.
ROE's big movers were actually Vengevine and Gideon at around $35 each. The Eldrazi guys all stayed in the $8-12 range, if I remember correctly. Most of the value was definitely at Mythic, though, instead of Rare. (A pattern that continued with Tinsman's AVR)
Oooh, Thrags at $29 shipped per playset seems good. Cheap ones have dried up on eBay. In fact, they've almost dried up completely... there's only 10 Thrags on all of eBay for Buy it Now (2 playsets and 2 singles). I'm not saying that it'll continue upward in the long term though, so if you don't need them now, it might be smart to wait and see. Hard to see such a splashable and hard to deal with creature going much below $4-5, at least until it falls out of Standard.
Thanks for the preliminary box value results, Jeff. Good luck with your store inventory for this set... although I don't know if you need luck because you always seem to do fairly well which is great!
Wow 30 dollars a playset for thragtusk is pretty good. I myself hate when sets are dictated by the mythic rares. Its when nothing in the set is really worth anything and the only thing that is are the mythics. Reminds me of the whole Jace the Mind Sculptor debacle and the whole Worldwake mess.
Thragtusk could end up being pretty expensive if the set isn't opened very much. It's probably going to see the most play of any rare or mythic and it's a big set..
I checked my prices today but I don't need to do a full update of the tally, because I can just summarize it by saying anything reprinted looks weak, everything else looks stable, except Liliana for some reason went up a couple bucks.
Mythics which aren't reprints dominate the tally:
1) Ajani, Caller of the Pride (32)
2) Sublime Archangel (20)
3) Thundermaw Hellkite (20)

There was plenty of good stuff in ROE. Especially the explosion of when Exarch Twin happened with Splinter twin, Student of Warfare in WW, Consuming Vapors Consume the meek in */B control, Coralhelm Commander in Legacy.

Thanks for the preliminary box value results, Jeff. Good luck with your store inventory for this set... although I don't know if you need luck because you always seem to do fairly well which is great!
