I play it because of the unique ability on just one other card and tho only cubeable instant with the effect. On top of that its just fun to cascade into a random card, plus you can get the amazing shoot their dude cascade into FTK to drop another guy and surprise block the third for the blow out, this was the best its ever been for me, stablized with it and took over soon after for the win.
I think it provides an effect which is exciting on the game in addition to being very powerful. Personally I see it as the best 5+ CMC BR card (outclassing Sarkhan the Mad).
To be fair, I am still a little hurt after my opponent -2'd Chandra, the Firebrand and cast Bit Blast on one of my four creatures, forking it to a second. The two cascade effects hit Go for the Throat and Faith's Fetters. The very definition of a blowout. Needless to say I lost this game pretty badly.
We actually argued about this, whether it copied the cast (what he thought) or whether it copied the actual spell when it was already on the stack (what I thought). In the end most people went with what he thought would happen, though now I feel like I got cheated
I love this card. Cascade on an instant removal is great, even at 5 mana. Blasting one of their attackers and cascading into a surprise blocker is especially filthy
I agree with this. Bit Blast is one of my favorite Rakdos cards.
I like it a lot and run it as one of my 4 BR cards. That guild is pretty stacked, with a lot of cards of similar power level. I wouldn't fault anyone who decides to run Falkenrath Aristocrat, Blightning, or Blazing Specter instead. One of the things I like about Bit Blast is the mana cost. It's not further clogging up the crowded 4cc slot, and it can cascade into all those great 4cc cards: FTK, Nekrataal, Avalanche Riders, Bloodbraid (too sexy!), Redcap, etc. It's most attractive to midrange decks, but both aggro and control will run it sometimes. I've also found it's good enough to push me to splash for it.
I think it's better than Sarkhan the Mad, but I actually still play Sarkhan over it in my list because I personally think Sarkhan is more fun. He may be my favorite planeswalker ever, and it makes me sad that he doesn't see more use.
I don't think it's a particularly huge gap though. They're both pretty powerful cards. I think the best comparison is to Prophetic Bolt, where you're trading a choice of cards and being able to hit a player for getting to cast the card for free. If you like Prophetic Bolt, you really should be playing Bit Blast too
I'm missing something in that story. You don't play the Terminate, Demon dies to the Thrun, Thrun presumably regenerates, and defender is at 4 life and untaps.
As far as I know the Terminate is actually placed on the top of the stack and resolves first. You could choose the Baloth as the target, and then when the Bit Blast resolves there is no legal target and the spell fizzles. I don't think the Bloodgift needed to die in this series of plays.
There is so much wrong with this. Even if they did have to play Terminate (they don't) they could just target the Baloth, as the Bit Blast resolves second.

Proph bolt is leaps and bounds better than bit blast simply because it can go to the dome, impulses, and can be played in a deck with counter spells. We cut bit blast from my cube because 5 mana was a lot to pay for a removal spell that can't kill a Titan or other various finishers. If you wiff on the cascade the card becomes even more abysmal. I think cascade is fun in cube but for now blood braid elf is the only card I like playing with the ability.
It really depends on what you hit with the Cascade. If I grab something like a Mox, then ya... the Bolt is better. But if I'm targeting a creature anyways, Blast is outright better and it can become simply absurd with some of the things you hit; especially mid-combat.
Bit Blast is one of the cards with the highest ceiling for absurdness, because hitting something like FTK or Skinrender mid-combat (not out of the realm of possibility, considering the colors) is just an absolute beating and can easily be a 3-for-1.
Pretty sure I'd rather have Bit Blast in my Grixis decks than Proph Bolt.
This card is fun as all hell. Last time we cubed I cast it with three beast tokens coming as me, and flipped an FtK. No more beast tokens.
I literally just played this out in my head and it made me smile. I can just imagine doing this during my opponent's attack, completely blowing him out and then saying, "You done?" Yeah, Bit Blast is quite awesome.
Bituminous Blast
I run it, and like it well enough. Does anyone else have any experience with it?

I have seen lists running either Demigod of Revenge or Void. Both cards are easily outclassed nowadays, but they do exist.

Why? You can opt not to play the play the Terminate.

Yeah, it's a bit expensive for plain removal, but my favorite aspect (as evidenced in this thread already) are the awesome stories it leads to.
