No planeswalker since Jace has held the preorder price. I can't believe people are *that* stupid to still buy into the hype.
You can replace the word "planeswalker" with "Magic card" and the sentence is still true. I can't see why you're targeting planeswalkers. Almost every Magic single falls drastically in price within days of millions of booster boxes being opened up.

Remember when Venser and Koth were $45-$50? Or when Karn was pushing at least $35? Heck, Tibalt started at ~$25 or so. Many cards drop in value after the set is released, but no other card type crashes in price harder than planeswalkers do.
Jace has forever ruined the preorder price of planeswalkers for one simple reason: the stores and other sellers got burned big time for selling Jace at ~$30 during Worldwake preorders. Ever since Jace, it's as if vendors have subconsciously said "Never again!" and now have preorder prices for planeswalkers as if they are going to be the next Jace. They don't want to lose a ridiculous amount of money again.

I used to agree with this but Bonfire, Entreat, Wolfirsilverheart, and Thundermaw Hellkite, has really made me rethink this.

There will always be a few cards that will increase after the pre-sales period, however at the same time 90%+ of the cards will drop after the pre-sales period. The fact that some do, and some have gone up after, is why people speculate at all and will continue to speculate even after facing loss after loss on their pre-sales speculation/buying.
Even I have trouble trying to pick a winner when it comes to early singles sales. I might try 3 or 4 different cards each set, and 1 of those is a "winner". And I have 10 or 15 years experience. The best time for speculators is soon after the set releases and the boxes are opened and the market is flooding with singles. This tends to be before tournament results have discovered the hottest cards. If you think you can spot the winner and predict the metagame of the future, then is your chance to strike IMO. (We're somewhere in the right range for M13 at the moment, for example. Not that there seem to be many hidden gems in this set...)
Another thing to consider is the Planeswalkers are always the most expensive cards in the set, even after prices settle. Look at any set in the past 4 or 5 years. ANY set. Planeswalkers dominate the top of the list of every one. So when people have cash to spend just as a set is coming out, a lot of them who've noticed this trend will blow it on Planeswalkers, even though all cards (except the very few which buck the trend) will drop drastically as millions of booster packs get opened.
In fact, if you're going to blow money on singles just as a set's singles go on sale, Planeswalkers are probably the way to go. They'll always end up being the top cards of the set no matter how badly they suck, and what's worse, buying piles of $2 rares that soon will be completely valueless, or buying a few $15 Planeswalkers that will still be $5 or $10?
It's hard to speculate succesfully, especially if you're looking at resale value. Because you're paying retail, and selling at under retail, there has to be a large move in order to actually make money. I almost bought bonfires and entreats before the set came out, and decided to play the odds of them going down instead. But it could have just as easilly gone the other way, where they went down after release.

Or C, none of the above and wait until prices settle.
Yes; if you track the value of a box for each set, it always goes down in the first months. It only ever goes up after it's out of production. So even if you need to get a few cards at higher prices, overall you'll pay less.
The card's most recent move is on right. means no movement. is a card that wasn't on the list last update. This is the update's hottest mover. (#) is price in CND incl. shipping here.
Yeva Nature's Herald, Cathedral of War, Omniscience, and Chandra the Firebrand fell below $3 and therefore off the tally this update, leaving just 12 cards worth opening in a booster pack.
Ajani, like most cards this tally, lost about 10% of its value and is now just a dollar above 2nd place, Sublime Archangel. Hellkite seems to be losing ground to the Archangel now, a solid $2 lower. I'm sold out on the Archangel while I still have Hellkites in stock. A quick eBay search shows almost twice as many actions sitting around for Hellkite over Archangel. At least for now, a trend seems to be emerging, and you may want to wait on picking up Hellkites until they're lower. Liliana only lost a dollar, and as discussed in the thread recently, it seems players are holding out hopes that fetchlands in the new Ravnica block are going to make her top tier playable. Thragtusk seems comfortable for the moment at ten bucks. I'm looking for it to drop back to $8 and below soon. The value of the remaining cards drops quickly to 7, then a few at 5, and lastly Master of the Pearl Trident at $4.
Rancor and Vampire Nighthawk have been selling very well lately, and I've finally started to sell some commons. I doubt that'll last, with the commons we got in this set. Overall box value is probably down slightly but I don't think it has fallen drastically yet, which is good because it had a low box value out of the gate this time. Thanks for reading and participating in the thread.
If the store owner says that I can't trade in the premises, I'll just go outside. If he says that I can't trade within 10m of his premises, I'll go to 11 meters. If he says that he doesn't want to see me trading, I will put a basket over his head and continue trading.
Yes, he's a local legend. He's only known to take his clothes off before he goes into the Ladies' Lockerroom. Nobody knows what he does in there because he's invisible, but it's almost certainly tons of masturbating.
If you're curious about current prices do some research yourself...the information is readily available if you look for it.

Look at my name...what did you expect?
Thank you WOTC for introducing the Modern format, a format where all the whiners can enjoy a level playing field and where they can play with none of the best cards of all time!
The card's most recent move is on right. means no movement. is a card that wasn't on the list last update. This is the update's hottest mover. (#) is price in CND incl. shipping here.
As you can see, things have quietened down for M13 lately. There have only been a handful of posts in this thread since the last update, and for the first time ever, the running tally went completely unchanged. Ajani did lose $1 to nestle down next to Sublime at $20 but otherwise, and remarkably, there have been absolutely zero price moves whatsoever for the entire tally! Thragtusk has surprised me by not falling below $10 since it first broke above that level in the first week or so. Krenko (the Goblin that makes more Goblins) has looked strong recently and could be about to break onto the tally next time I update.
Box value is still pretty low (not much above $100, if that) but at least it doesn't appear to be falling very fast right now.
Well, its update time again, since I have a few minutes: As always prices come from the lowest end of ebay buy it nows for playsets/4, and the lower end of tcgplayer (typically whichever is lower).
Top mythics/rares:
Ajani, Caller of the Pride: $20
Sublime Archangel: $20
Thundermaw Hellkite: $18
Liliana of the Dark Realms: $15
Thragtusk: $10
Jace Memory Adept: $7
Vampire Nocturnus: $6.50
Garruk Primal Hunter: $5
Akroma's Memorial: $5
Talrand the Sky Summoner: $4.50
Nicol Bolas Planeswalker: $4
Chandra the Firebrand: $3
Omniscience: $3
Gilded Lotus: $3* (Can be gotten for $2.50, but Ive nearly sold through my entire 120-box supply of them at $3 at the shop I sell at)
Cathedral of War: $2.50
Mutilate: $2.50
Master of the Pearl Trident: $2.50
Primordial Hydra: $2.50
Elderscale Wurm: $2
Serra Avatar: $2
Dragonskull Summit: $2
Drowned Catacomb: $2.50
Glacial Fortress: $2
Krenko Mob Boss: $2.50
Sunpetal Grove: $2
Yeva, Nature's Herald: $2
Rootbound Crag: $2* (Sell very well at $2, but can be gotten for $1.50 online)
Disciple of Bolas: $1.50
Odric Master Tactician: $1.50
Serra Avenger: $1.50
Slumbering Dragon: $1.50
Everything else is $1 or less.
Total value of mythics: $115 (Down $4)
Total value of rares: $54 (Down $2)
Total value of common/uncommon set: $6 (Down $1.50)
Total set value: $175 (Down $7.50)
Overall average box value (some will be higher, some will be lower):
Mythics: $7.67/mythic x 4.5 mythics/box = $34.50 (down $1.50)
Rares: $1.02/rare x 31.5 rares/box = $32 (Down $1)
Uncommon/common set: $7.50/set x 1.8 sets/box = $10.80 (down $3.20)
Foils: $4.70 (Down .30)
Total overall average box value: $82 (Down $6)
Wasnt really a ton of movement this time compared to previous updates (by myself or others). The set has really stabilized quite a bit more. Box value continues to drop unfortunately and whilte still above $80 for now, it really isnt a box that can be profited very well off of anymore. Anyhow, Ill have to leave it at that for now. Enjoy the update and Ill try to do another one as soon as I can.
Oooh boy, $82 now? Sadness. Just a few weeks into the set and box value is already well below what I pay ($100). It's already not worth opening boxes even for me who gets a bulk discount on them.

Thank you for the update, Jeff.
$100 is a bulk discount? I'm pretty sure you can order them from SCG for less than that...
EDIT: ChannelFireball has M13 Boxes brand new, in-stock for $89.99.
Hmm, apparently not much interest in M13 from the Standard-players. Although MTGO Standard has Augur of Bolas as a 2-of in the Delver deck that is continuing to dominate Standard. The question is ofcourse how Delver is going to survive in Standard without some of the key spells, so it may or may not happen for Augur of Bolas.
Only being an uncommon he won't be a money card, I think he's good enough to warrant a price tag above a bulk uncommon though. He fits into pretty much anything spell based.
