As a lover of Overgrown Battlement, I reckon this guy looks like he'd make for some decent acceleration. He costs a little more and has some less toughness, but the mana fixing makes him quite superb. I don't think he'd make much of a splash in most formats though. What do you think? |

The fact that you can get any combination of mana is interesting. Plus, the defenders matter theme is... unexpected. In a way that makes me smile. We will have to see what else the block brings in terms of defenders. I'm guessing he will see play in some kind of four or five color ramp. However, a 3cmc defender with a toughness of only 3 and an extremely conditional ability is still kinda sketchy, at the end of the day. Here's hoping he'll find a home, though.

Door to Nothingness Defenders.dec, obviously.
...actually, Ludevic's Test Subject is a defender. This guy could be rather interesting, as long as some more good defenders get spoiled.

Hmm...I'm trying to think how quickly we can use door to nothingness with this guy and the lantern...Turn 6 maybe? Turn 1 Avacyn's Pilgrim, turn 2 that 0/2 land-fetch wall, turn 3 Chromatic Lantern, turn 4 drop Axebane, turn 5 drop Door and another land-fetch wall, turn 6 you have 6 lands, 3 defenders, Chromatic Lantern, and an untapped Door to Nothingness.

Freed from Real. Modern Pauper legal. Both pieces of the combo can be fetched with Drift of Phantasms, which is a defender in itself. Overgrown Battlement, Vine Trellis and Wall of Roots can act as early game blockers and mana accellerator. The only thing the deck lack is a efficient mana outlet possibly at 3cc (or 2cc, to be fetched with Muddle the Mixture) in green or blue.

@above:
T1 accelerant T2 test subject - Spell pierce in hand. T3 this - Spell pierce in hand. T4 freed from the real. At this point, anything in your hand can be cast to protect your engine, and you can get a 13/13 quite easily. Just wish it was a token, so you could use Rootborn Defenses to both protect and gain two of them. |

Now that i think about it, it could work even in T2 with Galvanic Alchemist and enough creatures with defender. And a mana outlet like Scalding Devil...

Honestly, when I saw this card, I started jumping of joy. I had a few ideas for Defender.dec in pauper, but the problem was that Overgrown Battlement made only green mana. With this, it should work better. Obviously, there is a difference between T2 and T3, buuuuut, I don't care.
