Has anybody ever considered these? Back when mana burn existed the mana-upon-death clause could often be a drawback. Now Cathodion and Su-Chi just look like efficiently costed dudes with no downside, and the potential for fun hijinks with Smallpox, Barter in Blood, Recurring Nightmare, Tinker, etc.
If the mana could stick around between phases, I'd probably consider at least cathodion. The problem is, if he dies in combat . . . . I get nothing out of it. That's awkward. And not good.
When I see Healing Salve, I'm often like "Oh girl, I wish I could turn every card into this." Thanks they removed the gain life part, otherwise this would have been broken.
If you're playing a Peasant cube, i highly recommend cathodion, and su-chi is probably fine enough as well. Your black and red aggro decks will thank you.
The best creature of the X/X for X variety is actually Chimeric Mass, it's sorcery-proof and it grows with your mana capacity. Those advantages are far better than the mana as LTB trigger.
I would recommend Mass 500+ cubes. The cards in the OP are hardly worth cubing at any size.
True, but you can still use the mana to cast instants or activate abilities.
sure, if you have the instant in hand, have the necessary colored mana untapped, and it's advantageous to cast the spell at that moment. oh, and the instant/ability requires a good amount of colorless mana.
