Not to derail, but it looks like I'm back to brewing...I'll still play Red a lot of the time, but I've just got the itch to build some new stuff.
Ever have a single, likely competitively non-viable card inspire several different deck ideas? I've been trying to navelgaze a bit and try to predict RDW when the Innistrad block rotates out, which is obviously just plain stupid, since we'll have Dragon's Maze, M14, and the first set in the 'Friends' block by the time that happens...but still.
Anyway, in doing so, I've been trying to see if/how I could shoehorn in a particular card that directly appeals to the Timmy in me, and just not finding a way to make it work (probably because it's a waste of a spot in a competitive deck,) and then this morning I got the oh-so-obvious revelation to try putting it decks BESIDES Red Sligh...boom, 3-4 kernels of deck ideas in my head, some of which don't even include the card that's inspired all this.
They'll all be wildly uncompetitive, of course, but they'll be kitchen table fun. I'm just happy I've broken out of my brewing slump.
Hell, building viable and playable decks out of random trash is way harder than throwing the 10 most expensive spells + land in a deck and calling it a day.
What card got you brewing?

Degenerate? Sure. Loudmouth? You bet. Law abiding? No ****ing way.

Hello, Kazekirimaru, look at Vexing Devil,
now look at a good card,
now back at VD,
now back to the good card.
Sadly, VD isn’t a good card, but if he stopped using the punisher mechanic, he could play like a good card.
Look down, back up, where are you? You’re on the Pro Tour with the deck your deck could play like.
What’s in your hand? Back at me. I have it, it’s a bad deck with a playset of VDs.
Look again, the VDs are now good cards.
Anything is possible when your deck plays good spells and not VD.
I’m on a horse.

It's like Hellrider's slow little brother... like Hellrider is Johnny Depp and Rubblebelt Raiders is Leonardo Decaprio.
I guess Thundermaw is their incredibly obese mother in this metaphore?
I don't know, but give it enough ways to gain Haste and I don't think it's too bad in a creature heavy Aggro shell.
Well, now I've officially picked 'Gilbert' as my nickname for that card, and NO ONE I play will ever get why...
Honestly, I think I'm going to end up trying it in a Naya shell with Champion of the Parish, Frontline Medic, some ramp, Hellrider, etc. It'll take some time to boil the list down and put together something worth mentioning.
Other deck ideas that sprang from trying to fix the weaknesses of the Raiders:
BUG: Using 2x(Master Biomancer + Deadeye Navigator) to repeatedly flicker the Biomancers out/in, making them bigger all the time...then drop Raiders with a crapload of counters already on them. Corpsejack for added silliness. Honestly...I'll build this one, but without Rubblebelt Raiders. What I've listed above is going to be enough of a pain to get online without disruption, and honestly, by the time it is, you don't really NEED the Raiders. Besides, their nifty ability comes from attacking with a BUNCH of creatures. Using Biomancer just to give them counters when ETB can be done with anything, and a 4 CMC 1/1 is hardly the best choice for that.
A simple W/G deck with populate to keep a good supply of creatures to fuel Rubblebelt, and again, Frontline Medic to keep them safe.
The same as above, but R/W to capitalize on Rubblebelt + Hellrider.
I've got some others, but I'm blanking on them right now. They'll be fun to build and poke holes in, anyway.

Sadly, VD isn’t a good card, but if he stopped using the punisher mechanic and let you decide what form he took, he could play like a good card.
Look down, back up, where are you? You’re on a boat with the deck your deck could play like.
What’s in your hand? Back at me. I have it, it’s a bad deck with a playset of VDs.

Point thoroughly made.
So...VD is an auto 4-of, then?
EDIT: Attempted to sig-quote, 500 character limit said no. Boo.
Also, I'm going to be doing some hard tests to put the Vexing Devil controversy to bed (I wish, anyway...) permanently over the next few days/weeks, as I can get time/volunteers. I'm not going to tell them exactly what I'm doing, as to not skew the results, but under the guise of "playtesting," I'm going to play the crap out of my RDW against as many decks as possible, and take some pretty detailed notes.
My hypothesis is that we ought to be able to show that besides the simple "punisher" mechanic, which seems to escape many, that the average one-drop, over the course of a game, will do at least one, if not more, of the following:
1) Deal more than 4 damage to an opponent
2) Require 1+ cards to deal with (whether this is kill spells, or creatures it kills before it dies are currently irrelevant to me)
3) Prevent damage to me, in the form of blocking
So, there we have it. Now to collect me some data, and run me some fancy-pants analyses.
Also, don't belittle your deck building skills - I've known plenty of people whose only skills/purpose in building decks was to make their opponents feel as bad as possible for losing to it.
I knew a guy who put together a Shahrazad + Eye of the Storm deck - he stated that he didn't consider a match won until the other guy left in humiliation, or better yet, quit the game.
That is literally the worst possible idea I've ever heard. I have a buddy who has had a few Eye decks and they suck to play against in a general sense. Adding subgames to that is...cruel.
Probably best to assume everyone in here is being sarcastic and/or is drunk. We're red mages after all.
We live in a world of sarcasm, alcohol, Firefly obsession, and constant phallic references. In such a world, fire is the only thing that really makes sense.
As far as deckbulding, I've been working on B/W control with varying degrees of success. It's still missing something for it's early game.
Lately the only red I've been playing is in legacy. I kind of obsess over my deck--got two alpha bolts at the GP and some bloodstained mires, Italian no less.

So, uhm...
I'm just going to open up a can of worms here, since I'm new and honestly don't understand.
Why all the hate for Vexing Devil?
I understand it's uses are limited since the 4 damage can't be directed to a creature, but, still...
In short: When you need it to be 4 damage, it'll be a creature. When you need a creature, it'll be four damage.

Somehow I believe this.
"War Stories" is probably the best episode of Firefly I've seen yet.
I only get my quality by assocation.
