I am always looking for more playable one drops. Stonewright failed in normal cube and Goblin Patrol is meh ....
The question is, if this card is only a Raging Goblin with an upside or a good battalion creature with a 1/1 body?
Has anyone been testing Legion Loyalist? The body is pretty unimpressive in the early game, but the Battalion trigger is pretty brutal for a 1cc card. The haste and cheap cmc make it pretty easy to trigger the Battalion when he's topdecked.
For those who have seen him in action, is he a good enough red 1-drop for a 540 cube?

I found him best when you already have the other two creatures ready to go into an attack and then play him and declare attacks. So far he has not lived long enough to see a second combat phase but he does really good work in that first combat phase. But please note, he kind of sucks if you are in top deck mode and you pull him on a empty board.
The benifits when playing him on a board with 2 or more creatures is great but I am unsure if I am going to keep him or not. I am thinking or cutting him.
Also please note, my cube is only used for multi-player play so a regular cube results may vary.
Seems pretty weak to me. It is a one drop that is best played turn three or four. Even then it is quite vulnerable.
It does feel like a spell in a way. Like a bad Reckless Charge or something.
Yeah when comparing it to Reckless Charge it does look pretty bad, all of the trigger abilities are great except that none of it helps increase the damage.
I'm going to give him a shot for a while. Not particularly great in the early game (although a Raging Goblin isn't TOO bad) but it has better mid-late game value than most other 1-drops. I mean, first strike, trample AND token evasion for 1 mana is pretty darn good. Trample is a rare ability for red and it helps to push extra damage through with your attack. And Hero of Oxid Ridge has shown me that token evasion is actually a pretty valuable ability.
I like this guy but effectively he's a four or five drop. I liked him a lot more when I thought he granted haste to everything as well. Obviously that would be redundant on battalion anyway but my mind hadn't got that far yet. Dropping it after an FTK or something is nice.
Give him a go, make a thread for him if he works out.
First draft with Legion Loyalist is looking good. It's a hell of an effect for 1 mana when the Battalion triggers. The First Strike really good with anthems (especially Battle Cry) and the Trample is super relevant with Swords. And the token evasion is relevant against quite a few cards, and shores up a big weakness that red aggro decks have (WG mid-range decks). So far so good. The haste really helps the trigger take place (versus a Battalion creature without that ability). I'll leep you updated.
Good to know I'm not crazy. I've been testing the Loyalist lately and he's been pretty solid. The problem with Raging Goblin is that he'll do some damage and then he'll be outclassed by every other creatures. Legion Loyalist, thanks to Battalion, keeps his value (either as a 1st turn drop or as a mid-game drop) and add value to his side of the board. He's not amazing by himself but he can do a lot for a 1cmc creature in the right deck.
I just added Loyalist as well in place of Flame Javelin. My cube had an issue with there being too much spot removal, so durdly counterburn was just better than aggro. Hopefully this change helps fix that a bit. I cut javelin because it's the most color-intensive of the burn cards.

I decided to keep him. After further play and testing he seems to have found his place. Like I previous said his effect when you already have two or more creatures out is amazing. Looks like others are finding similiar uses for him. The more time I give him in the cube the more he seems to be working out.
I'm definitely interested to hear what people have to say about him. I had my eye on him since it was released, but haven't had a chance to play with it yet. It seems like an extremely versatile one drop that could do some damage in the late game if you have a board stall. I view this guy as a red spell for one that gives your creatures trample and first strike.

Unpowered Cube, work in progress, but getting there!
this guy, even as a third turn play, is insane. He is basically a R, your creatures (hopefully greater than 2 in aggro) get first strike and TRAMPLE.
As someone else mentioned, Trample in red is such a rarity effect.
We've been looking for playable red one drop creatures since red's one and two's are so poor. One of my cubers told me about this card and we played a draft with it where it was insane.
A raging goblin really isn't that bad, and he has great value in the mid and late game.
Can I get some cube stories from people with experience with this guy? Why did this guy get cut?
He's still here in my 540 unpowered and has earned his keep. It enables numerous alpha swings that would otherwise be too costly. Getting though Sorin, Elspeths, and Lingering Souls is a nice bonus.
I like him. I found battalion really easy to trigger in an aggro deck. Especially since this guy has haste, so he can come out of nowhere as the third attacker. He is really good at forcing some damage through in the midgame. First strike + trample is a good combination for this. While the anti-token clause is situational, tokens usually do a really good job of stabilizing against an aggro deck, so being able to ignore them is great for the aggro player. It is rather satisfying to ignore that Myr Battlesphere or Deranged Hermit and just push the final damage through.
Not sure if I would play him at 360 cards, since he is not the greatest aggro creature, but he is a decent red 1-drop for midsized cubes.
He got cut just due to size restrictions. When my cube was bigger (and we had less good 1-drops) he was a refreshing option. But when the cube size shrank and we got some better creatures, it got cut. It's a fun card though, and pretty solid for a 1cc creature.

I am not a believer, but I hope you prove me wrong. The only real way of knowing this is by testing cards, so I wish this Goblin luck.

True.
I also think Raging Goblin isn't the worst when you have equipment in play.

Tokens are extremely prevalent in many Cubes nowadays, so the usefulness of his effect continues to increase.
It's not as good as the core of Red's one-drops (Grim Lavamancer, Goblin Guide, Firedrinker Satyr, Jackal Pup & Stromkirk Noble), but he's at least up for consideration when the alternatives are Mogg Fanatic, Spikeshot Elder, Reckless Waif, Vexing Devil and Frenzied Goblin.
