Anyone catch Jon Finkel at Kuala Lumpur? After fifteen rounds of competitive play, the man I have always idolized is sitting atop the standings with an amazing 40 points! Finkel on Sunday returns! How amazing would it be for the king to return and capture this event? Absolutely awesome!:)
I don't have any hard numbers on this, but I'm targeted more often than a black guy driving a beat-up sedan with a broken tail-light and no license plate, and Cy's well aware of that.
In the MWS world, for many players, winning also makes you a noob.
The same applies to:
-Knowing the rules.
-Netdecking.
-Not netdecking.
-Using old versions of a card (yeah, it has hapenned to me: "Ugh... ugly pic noob")
-Knowing English.
-Using phases.
-Countering spells.
<@MarkRosewater> THis is a secret we've carefully guarded but for this chat I'm going to spill the beans.
<@MarkRosewater> Some cards in Magic are better than others.
<@MarkRosewater> Ssh, don't tell anyone.
heh. ive only seen him once because i live in AZ. I was randomly in NYC for lorwyn PR and i saw him at Neutral Ground. Did not dare go talk to him though.

I let out a OMG!!!!!! as soon as I checked the coverage and then ran a victory lap around my house. No one is as big a Finkel fan as I am (I have a signed copy of johnny magic and the cardshark kids) and I'm pretty sure that debate about who the best player of all time is should come to an end as Jon now has 12 pro-tour T8s, a category that will probably never see another person break double digits. The T8 is incredible, with the best active limited player in the world (hron), one of the best, if not the best active pro in the world (wafo), 2 time pt champ Nicolai herzog, Marcio Carvalho (T8 at worlds 2005), and Mario Pascoli (2 time italian nats winner).
I would also like a shout out to my boy Steve Sadin. After starting the tournament off 2-2, steve rattled off some wins and ended 11-4 in 12th place.
Edit: Also, Jon is going to Hollywood. He's teaming with Pat Chapin. Should be good.
Wow. What a top eight. to bad i have a show tonight and can't watch the first round of top 8. Finkel/Herzog in the Finals would be an instant classic.
Edit: Also looks like America is once again becoming a Magic Super Power. Cheon/LSV, Hron, Finkel, Heezy, Chapin, and what not.
And it's about time, too. We have always had more than our fair share of great players but the last few years have just sucked, in terms of results. Go USA!!
man, NY deserves a title, whats pretty cool is that the new finkle(wafo-tapa) is in the top 8
While Guillaume is very impressive, and may very well be the best active pro player right now, calling him "the new finkel" is a little hasty, especially when he got beaten by the old one twice yesterday.
and people said he was not good at the 40 card decks:rofl:
Who said this? They were very uninformed. He has 3 limited grand prix T8s as well as a T16 at pt geneva.
and people said he was not good at the 40 card decks:rofl:
Who says that?
Finkel himself says Limited is the best format because that's where skill matters the most, as opposed to constructed which is about learning the matchups.
And yeah, I'm very excited about him Top 8ing again, and the Top 8 is awesome on the whole too.
and constructed takes a little more skill, limited as actually a bit more luck based, most of my friends from NY say that
I would definitely argue against the fact that constructed takes more skill. MAYBE, if the deck you are playing is something you created, or heavily influenced for your metagame, in which case building a deck can be attributed to constructed being hard, but limited is not at all luck based, and completely skill driven. Sealed is definitely luck-based though.
Considering the amount of players, that top 8 is no fluke.
And who said Wafo-Tapa wasn't good at limited? He may not be famous for it, but he can certainly hold his own. (he is in the top 8, and has fared well at a lot of limited events, inclusing the draft portion at worlds)

I would love to see this guy win another worlds honestly.
The crazy thing is, they are seeded 1, 2, 3, 6 respectively...so 3 of them may still be in it through the quarters.

That is one hell of a top 8, though, it should be fun to watch.

Courtesy is contagious. Go out and catch some.
<Sigh> My quest for intelligent life on the internet continues.
yeah, this is like..whoa...its kinda backwards. I'm used to seeing only 1 (if any) americans in T8 competition, and now only one asian...
I'll take it though. GO USA

Honestly Finkel is one of the best players of all time, aside from being inactive for a bit, I'm sure Finkel kept up on Magic.
Other then this, it would be nice if he continued to play pro magic.
It was in the MTG.com article.
