I'm not sure which is the participation and which is the prize, but here you are:
Maralen of the Mornsong
Hand +0, Life -3
At the beginning of the game, you may pay any amount of life.
You can't draw cards.
At the beginning of your draw step, look at the top X cards of your library, where X is the amount of life paid with Avatar - Maralen of the Mornsong. Put 1 of them into your hand, and then shuffle.
Stonehewer Giant
Hand +1, Life -5
Whenever a creature comes into play under your control, put a token into play as a copy of an Equipment card with converted mana cost lower than that creature's mana cost chosen at random. Attach that Equipment to that creature.
Neat. Maralen looks a little precarious, as she is -3 life to start, and you have to pay an extra 2 to get any effect out of her ability. And it doesn't start getting GOOD until around 5 extra life.
no teh giant is lower, so you have to play a 1 mana creature to get an 0 mana equipment and so on also the random thing isn't realy that good..
ok if you are lucky and if you have creature with cost reduction, you can ge good things.
maralen is really really good in a combo deck I think, of course the lifeloss isn't good, but if you are getting yor comboparts better, it can be worth it

My new houserules:
1. Every player saing exiled or battlefield will be kicked out.
2. Not using you mana deals 2 points of manaburn.
3. Combat damage goes over the Stack and you can freely assign it.
4. Lifelinks does stack and doesn't safe you from dying.
5. Tokens are owned bye the one who has made them.
Everyone thinking M10 will not affect a lot of cards or Limited a lot, either has no clue about magic or has never played limited or is getting paid by wizards to do propaganda.
I'd love to see someone play March of the Machines with the giant as their avatar and trigger a ridiculous chain reaction.
Well, eventually you'll run out, as the token has to be of less converted mana cost...also, if you're unlucky you could play a Darksteel Colussus and just get a Paradise Mantle instantly.
Maralen seems to be very very awesome. Simply playing 3 life would be pretty much amazing, essentially giving you the next best thing to a Sensei's Divining Top. Of course, any deck using her wouldn't be able to draw cards, so you'd have to rely on Fact or Fiction and other such effects...
The Giant sounds like loads of fun. Maybe not that competitive, but getting a random piece of equipment is a very cool ability. Never really know whether you're going to get Tatsumasa or Peregrine Mask
So the giant make every CMC1 creature into a Birds of Paradise? That seems pretty good. Even more so in affinity, where the Paradise Mantle is another artifact on the board for Ravager and the cost reduction.
Well it seems Wotc is taking full advantage of the random generator that computing programs allow, as we now get random artifacts in addition to random creatures and random spells (Momir and Jhoria, respectively).
Sure, stuff like Snapping Drake and Goblin Piker are for limited. But Null isn't even playable against a 5 year old whose hand consists of a 6 of Clubs, Blue-Eyes White Dragon, Chimney Imp, and a very large cumquat.

I wonder if, for the casual crowds, you could combine this with the Morinfen avatar (+30 life) for some type of unholy combo. But what?

They only have Standard vanguard events so they only worry about balancing them for that environment. So stonehewer in affinity is going to only happen in casual.
Last time I looked Stonehewer was the participation prize.
So does anyone have a link to the Lorwyn vanguard avatars? I looked for them and couldn't find anything and I looked on the wizards site and only could find ashling.

Correct, no matter what you do CMC will never = 0 for what it grabs. Auto-Paradise Mantles were quite obviously problematic very quickly.
Incorrect - Arcbound Worker costs 1, so it will always have a paradise mantle attached when it comes into play. All 1 cc creatures get a paradise mantle - it's the only eqipment with cc < 1.
Tokens or Ornithopters do not get any equipment, though.
I would believe that they debugged it so it doesn't randomly give out paradise mantles, otherwise an elf-glimpse of nature deck goes near infinite...among other things. Auto-paradise mantle just screams broken, imo

Hmm? I'm on beta right now - will test while I'm waiting for a queue to fire, I don't care about avatars much so I didn't test it anymore once they mentioned it was set in stone - but perhaps they retweaked.
Checking...
Ah interesting they changed it back again. Odd. Ignore my previous statement, it does get Paradise Mantle'd.
This Maralen's a bit less interesting than the one that was initially rumored (that let you tutor for anything but had life loss based on the CMC of the cards you got). It still could be cool, but now it's just a risky way to get card selection instead of completely changing the way you build your deck. I can see why the other version could turn out to be problematic, though.
I do like Stonehewer a lot. I could see paradise mantle/affinity abuse becoming a problem, but for casual creature decks it could be fun. Personally, I just really want to play Momir Stonehewer.

Yes. The glimpse deck is Neektral avatar + glimpse + 1 mana black creatures. How could they let anyone else get that?

Any ideas on whether or not the Stonehewer could randomly give you Skullclamp? If so then Affinity decks could be nuts just on the idea of accidentally getting Skullclamp and then winning the game.

Stonehewer Giant seems good in affinity. Play an ornithoptor, get a free Paradise Mantle. Play an Arcbound Worker, get a free Bonesplitter. Play a Frogmite, get a free Grafted Wargear. Play a Myr Enforcer, get a free Sword of Kaldra. Pass the turn. Play an Arcbound Ravager, get a free Cranial Plating. Free creatures with high converted mana costs plus free artifacts to make the rest of them cheaper seems pretty powerful to me. Let's just hope they remebered to code it not to give you Skullclamp ever. Also interesting that every token you make comes with a free Paradise Mantle. Could have some interesting implications somehow.

that format is gonna own so badly

Was caught in beta nearly as fast as ya'll did. (It did when it used to be Cost=CMC originally however)

in an affinity deck with stonehewer giant I would run about such an list:
4 Vault of whispers
4 Glimmervoid
4 Tree of Tales
2 Darksteel Citadel
4 Myr servitor
4 Clockwork Beatle
4 Disciple of the Vault
4 Arcbound Raveger
4 Frogmite
4 Myr Enforcer
4 Sober Hoverguard
4 Broodstar
2 Glimpse of nature
this could be a verry verry sick deck^^

So an archbound worker won't get you any equipment then?
