Ugh, I still have another week of school. But no running for me, until July, when I have
THREE WEEKS OFF.
I know I've said this before, but I love to reiterate this.
I'll be in New York for about a week. I'm visiting the city, staying with a friend, and then it's up to Rochester and Ithica, where I'll be staying with my cousin Rachel at Cornell. Beyond that, I'm not sure what I'll be doing. Probably lulling around like a lazy bum.
Oh. There was a story on the news....in Maine, before the prom, a limo driver picked up some kids; he looked in the rearview mirror, only to discover that they were drinking. When he drove them home, per limo policy and state law, the parnets objected, and told the driver that he was ruining their prom.
Ugh.
Oh, and I have an interesting story. I gave a poor guy $200 today.
No, really. I did.
I was walking down mainstreet, and across the road, standing on a traffic island, was a man with a cardboard sign, reading, "Will Work for Food." Curious, and with an hour or so to spare before work, I crossed the street and introduced myself. He gave me a dirtyish look; I'm only 17, and clearly not an employer with food. But he obviously didn't have any immediate business prospects, so he joined me, at my request, in a nearby cafe, my treat. You see, I'm a very curious person, and like to learn about people and things.
Inside, we sat and ordered. Once I told him that I was paying, and that no, he didn't have to worry about the money, he ordered gluttonously--- a large chicken sandwhich(toasted bread), a large coffee(cream, no sugar) and a giant mufffin(lousy with blueberries)---and asked what I wanted to talk about.
I explained that I was simply curious about what led him to where he was. He didn't have the appearance or odor of a habitually impoverished man, and had the demeanor of one used to far more respectability than standing in public begging for food. His story confirmed that. He used to be a foreman in a construction firm. In 2003, he lost his job due to severe budget cuts---the company later went out of business entirely---and since then he'd worked odd jobs on and off. This week is an off week.
So I asked him, eventually, what he thought was the cause of his unemployement. His answer has swift and angry: that bastard W.
(And here comes the obligatory Randian-bent message of the story which you have all come to expect.)
It was clear, after only a few minutes, that he accepted none of the blame for his position. The blame lies solely with Bush, as far as he's concerned. I asked him what he has been doing to find a new job, and he gave me this look, as if to ask:what are you, stupid? He said that he stood in public places, holding his sign, of course. I asked if he had applied as a worker at any construction sites---I knew from experience that they are almost always hiring--and he frowned and repeated that he had been a foreman goddamit, and there was no way in hell that he was going to be just a grunt for the rest of his life. I reminded him that grunts got paid in money, not in food, and he didn't speak for a few minutes.
Well, after a while, I looked at my watch and discovered that I had to go to work. Before leaving, I apologized for taking up so much of his time. I figured I owed him something for all that time I'd taken, so I pulled out a couple $100 bills form my wallet, and told him to keep it, against his harsh refusals.
So there you have it. Me givng to the poor, and a Randian moral, all in one story? What more could you ask for?

Heh, I've had some similar experiences, T2 (though I can't say I've given out hundreds - props on that).
So I'm not really a big fan of hardcore, but some of my friends took me to a Himsa show yesterday, and I was very surprised to like it. The hardcore kids did not even get on my nerves. I did get kicked in the head about 5 times and punched a lot more because I was standing right at the stage and people were stagediving, but it was worth it.
Well, the only "bad" things that happened were that my watch broke because it got caught on someone's hand as they were falling from a stagedive, and one guy who must have weighed at least 200 lbs. stagedived right onto me. As in, there was nobody around me so he was about to land on my head and I had to support him entirely with my hands. Still a good show though. It got a lot better when the metalheads came in for Himsa

I have a weird problem. One of my more religious friends has invited me to his church next Sunday. I told him that I have never been very "faithful" or that I would be a good person to bring along on such an outing. He didn't seem to mid. I'm thinking of accepting, as it wouldn't be a bad idea to at least be open to other ideas but there is a problem. Many of the people in my community suspect it or liken it to be a cult, complete with "secret" rituals (whatever that means). I have several friends and many acquaintices who attend that church and I am afraid of what I might do once in there. But then again, it could help illuminate or eliminate many of the rumors I have heard of it myself. Any suggestions?
Quote from Prizm »
BlueWizard: I'd go, but I would ask a friend who's not part of that church to go with you.
@Tan- I actually kind of regret giving him $200...I had a 20 in there, too, and I'm not sure why I didn't just give him that...eh, whatever. Though I am experiencing this strange feeling...it's like...I don't know...good, or something.
As to the cult/church/thing, I'd go, just because it would be rather interesting experience. While I have not been to a Christian church since I was 11, I have since(for educational purposes) attended a Wiccan ritual(Ostara), a Jewish Synagog(my friend dragged me along), and yes, even a Scientology mass. All of which reaffirmed my atheism, though that was not the intent of the people who brought me ;).
Tomorrow's the last day of school. Um....yay? I feel slightly bi-polar...a few days ago I was raving about summer, and now it's just....meh. The one thing I'm looking forward to is my college tour around New England and New York. The rest is just....meh?
Anyway, I won't be on tomorrow---the Westboro Baptist Church, the group infamous for protesting gay rights, is coming to Litchfield, New Hampshire, to protest a highschool graduation, because the school supports a gay/straight support club. The group became nationally notorious when they protested the funeral of Matthew Shephard, the gay college student who was beaten to death in Wyoming in '98. Some friends of mine and I are going up to join the counter-demonstration. Umm....power to the people, and whatnot.
And that's all the news that's fit to....eh, whatever.
The counter-protest was fun. I personally carried a sign which read "God Hates Bigots", in mockery of their famous slogan, "God hates ***s". It was fairly peaceful, however, no arrests made. One parent did shout out some rather colorful obscenities and tossed them the middle finger, but other than that, there were no problems.
About the church thing...I'd go, even thought I'd be super pissed if they started preaching on me, which is probably what they'll do once they have you in there.
Only if they notice you're new.
On godhates***s... Wow. They traveled across states... to protest a graduation... because the school... supports a single club... that supports gay rights. I never expected a hate group to be smart, but this is below even my expectations of human nature.
Sorry I haven't been posting; I've been rather busy. This weekend is Father's Day, my mother's birthday, my brother's graduation, and the local high school's graduation. At the high school's graduation, the superintendant related all of his speech to Star Wars but not in a way that... required any mention of Star Wars. It was like "Things I learned from Star Wars: Choose your friends wisely" The principal and I exchanged glares across the crowd (****ing ******* liar embezzler ). Anyway, the whole ordeal made me really glad I left the school two years ago .
I recently stopped at a bookstore that was going out of business. I showed him my summer reading list, but he had just moved everything around and we couldn't find any of it but the Oerestia. In compensation for my time, he let me pick out a few free books! I got Sigmund Freud - Jokes and their Relation to the Unconscious (holy****thisbookblewmymindbuyitnow), John Locke - Second Treatise of Government (<3 Locke), and George Carlin - Napalm and Silly Putty (funny, but gets a little ranty near the end). Speaking of George Carlin, he's touring here in the fall, but I'll be away at college at the time :(. John Cleese, too. I WILL MISS THE JOHN CLEESE SHOW LIVE.
Soooo... discussion topics.
http://www.freefiona.com/. Fiona Apple recently (recently?) finished a CD and shipped it off to Sony to be released. They refused, saying that the album "wasn't commercial enough" and wouldn't make any money. Over time, a few of the songs leaked out to radio stations and the internet, and soon the entire album was available to the public, if they only knew where to look (and didn't mind breaking the law). The result is an upswelling of internet support for the album's release. Sony has not responded to the call of the masses and the album has remained off-limits. According to data, the songs on the album are being shared at a large rate... but not at a rate even remotely comparable to #1 albums like American Idiot, etc.. Apparently the internet doesn't have quite the rallying power as it would like to believe.
So my question to you, clan goers, is not whether or not Sony should release the album (if they say it won't sell, they probably know what they're talking about, and this clan of free-marketers won't argue that they should anyway ;)). My question is: does the internet overestimate its influence? We all already know that web polls mean jack, and most internet jokes aren't widely known enough to be mentioned in casual conversation, but then again, there are the bloggers who took down Rather, there were the country-wide debates on the legality of file sharing while Napster was being attacked, and there was the Numa guy. Even the Crazy Frog (that stupid little flash video of a frog pretending to be on a motorcycle) was turned into a cell phone ring tone and... wait for it... went to number ONE on the European music charts.
Does the internet really have the heavy influence over culture that it likes to think it has, or is that a fictional projection? (Think of all the Magic players who have never been to a Magic web site)
@GB- Have you read Locke's Essay Concerning Human Understanding? I loved that book, though I did love the essays on Gov't, as well.
As to the internet...well, I think it does heavily impact the culture---think about it. Every person on this clan lives miles and miles apart, separated by a continent, or even an ocean, and yet we all read the same things. Something that can reach that far is bound to be influential.
Also, I'm on vacation in Nebraska (technically Colorado at present). So I really don't have much time to type this. Depressing.
I went to a music festival, and while I was there took the time to actually read the 9/11 Commission Report. It was actually more interesting than I expected it to be; but my expectations were fairly low considering what it was.
Have a stack of books to read here, and I've just made my way into Aristotle's Politics. Should be fun.
Cool new thread, and all that.
And I'm out.

So, I went to church this past sunday (=o). I decided to bring my rather spiritually disinclined friend from the baseball team with me. It was an interesting experience. I can easily dispel some of the rumors I have heard about that specific church although I can see how people might get the idea that clandestine rituals occur here (heck, they still might). I was only hassled by a couple people, mostly because my parents weren't there with me/don't attend church every week but those people seemed to be in the minority. All in all, I was glad I went. I might have to read the bible this summer (along with the Quran)...

Yes, I do. My name there is the same as the one here, ljossberir. I'm on it rarely but if you notify me in advance I can go on. Does it even have file transfer? I don't remember.
I'd also like to say that I'm back at work on the Meta/Epist. thread. It's been rough for me these past couple months (as you may or may not know) and I've only been posting here as an "escape". To be totally honest, I actually forgot about it for awhile. So I hope it will be done soon enough. I've pretty much finished the first half.
I found the ruling of the supreme court interesting; they said that displaying religious symbols is not inherently unconstitutional---only when it is done in a strictly religious context. When it is done in a "historical" context, it is okay; such as the supreme court's own Moses display.
Sorry for the double post, something just came up and I thought I'd post again to say it...
I just got a call I've been waiting for for about 2 weeks....I've been looking at apartments for a few weeks, and I just got the call from the real estate company saying that I got the apartment I was looking at! It is $300 less a month, and is on the ground floor, so I will have no trouble moving my piano in( ).
But the great news is that I can actually, yes, drop one of my jobs, leaving me with only 1 full time and 1 part time job...thank God....
That means that I'll have more time to post, if I wnat, and more time to write and more time to read....I'm very excited!
On that note, however, I must go. My uncle is in my kitchen drinking coffee, saying that we need to hurry up if we're going to get any moving done tonight...hopefully, we'll have everything done by tomorrow night, at which time I'll post again. I don't have that much stuff, just a lot of books that need to be packed up.
If hefner was a rich, gay, playboy and had hot steamy sex with hot guys would you choose him? Of course not, mainly because im a straight male and find that stuff gross.

The problem, of course, being that you'd need another successful topdeck to make the Explosion point in the right direction.
How do you build a deck around this card anyway? It has no chance of enhancing your effects; its positive side is entirely based on your opponent's cards.
I was thinking of some sort of deck with a lot of storm cards, but then I read the effect. I do believe an article was either done on a card like this or the card itself on mtg.com (its been ages since I have been there ironically). Then again, perhaps you still could make the deck but make it go infinite, so the game ends in a tie. It would technically still be undefeatable, and its a quirky idea to boot. We'd be a shoe-in

Okay, most of the moving is done, I'm just taking a short break for food and posting... We basically have to move my kitchenware and my books, then clean up the old apartment. My new neighbors must have been pissed...we were moving my stuff in at 4 in the morning
As to the deck.... Brainstorm would be helpful here, allowing for some more library manipulation. I agree with Goblinboy, we should do some sort of big Combo (like Draco/Explosion).
Um...what else....my brain's too tired to work on this now. I'll think on it while I'm moving.

In the last line of the (terrible, cataclysmic, Satanic) ruling by the Supreme Court to allow for seizure of private property for private development, it says that this ruling does not overturn any state mandate to the contrary; luckily, it seems some NH legislators have seen that, and are going to great lengths to keep this out of our state.
Even our governor, Comrade Lynch, is backing legislation to stop this type of eminent domain in NH.

Heck, T2, even I'm opposed to giving private property away to other private citizens. I can understand using it to build a school, but not a Wal-Mart.
